We Deserve This Modern Interpretation of the Lamborghini Countach

The original Countach came to us in 1974 and stayed until 1990, before being replaced with the Diablo. Recently, Lamborghini celebrated the Countach’s 50th anniversary by launching a short series about its history. The original was designed by Marcello Gandini of Bertone and quickly became the definitive supercar of its period.

The rendering done by ARC Design looks like a proper modern-day Countach, replicating all distinctive design cues. The flared wheel arches from later versions of the Countach are not present here, which leads us to believe the rendering was inspired by earlier variants of the Italian supercar.

We also see some Diablo in the rear quarter panels of the rendering, as well as the Murcielago-inspired active rear buttresses, which open like the wings of a bat at high speeds.

The wheels look to be at least 19 inches, which isn’t really true to the original. Then again, 15-inch wheels just wouldn’t cut it on a modern-day supercar.

Recognizing that there’s no proper Lamborghini without “Lambo doors”, ARC Design has included the iconic scissor doors – an element initially invented by Marcello Gandini and first featured on the 1968 Alfa Romeo Carabo concept. The modern rendition of the Countach has that iconic element that’s both aesthetically pleasing and functional.

What ARC Design has created, is testimony that Lamborghini really needs to start making retro-inspired cars.

Under Audi ownership, the Italian supercar maker certainly missed some opportunities to make retro-inspired, limited-edition models. We, at least, hope some independent company decides to realize ARC Design’s work, like that Mercedes 300 SL-inspired S-Klub Speedster we talked about recently.
