The Golf R looked like a joke going up against the BMW M3, which is quite surprising!
by Sidd Dhimaan, onDrag races are fun when the cars involved in the race are closely matched and you don’t know which one’s going to win. They’re even more fun when they’re vastly different from each other, but make for a hell of a race. Or, sometimes the underdog snatches a win over the car expected to be the winner. However, there are some lopsided races once in a while, and this one between the BMW M3 Competition and the Volkswagen Golf R is one of them. Both the cars are known for their performance, but when they came face-to-face, it was a different story altogether.
How Much Power Do These Cars Make?
The Golf R features a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged engine that makes 320 horses and 302 pound-feet of torque.
Power is routed to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
The BMW M3 is powered by a 3.0-liter, six-cylinder twin-turbo mill that dishes out 510 ponies and 479 pound-feet of torque.
It is mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox that powers the rear wheels exclusively.
The Golf R, despite its all-wheel-drive system, weighs 397 pounds lesser than the 3,814-pound BMW M3
The Golf Didn’t Look Like A Threat To The M3
They had only one drag race because it was enough to prove that the BMW M3 is a little too much for the hot hatch. The BMW completed the quarter-mile race in 11.7 seconds, a full second quicker than the Golf R.
The rolling races were also one-sided. The first one was from 50 mph in the Comfort setting. While the power disparity is understandable, the Golf R has the lightning-quick dual-clutch gearbox that should have had a better kickdown than the M3 with the torque converter. Surprisingly, it didn’t and the BMW won comfortably. The result was pretty much the same in the second rolling where the cars were engaged in their sportiest setting.
As for the brake test, the heavier BMW managed to stop at a shorter distance, thus ensuring a clean sweep over its German counterpart. Well, this was one of the most lopsided races that seemed to be a lot more exciting on paper than in reality. They aren’t exactly rivals, so you can’t really blame the Golf R here and call it a slouch. Not to mention, the BMW costs twice as much as this Volkswagen. So, there better be a difference in the performances.
