The odd-triplet pairing of the Alfa Romeo SUV, BMW coupe, and the Audi wagon makes this race quite unpredictable
by Sidd Dhimaan, on LISTEN 03:50The folks at Carwow brought in three very different vehicles to the drag strip for a series of straight-line races. The face-off was between an Audi RS6, a BMW M4 Competition, and an Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio. All of them are some of the fastest vehicles in their respective niches. So, how do they fare against each other?
The RS6 Is Over 700 Pounds Heavier Than The M4!
The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio comes with a 2.9-liter, twin-turbo V-6 engine that puts out 510 horses and 443 pound-feet of twist.
The SUV is mated to an all-wheel-drive system with a rear bias and an eight-speed automatic gearbox with a torque converter.
The BMW M4 Competition is powered by a 3.0-liter, twin-turbo six-cylinder engine that generates 510 ponies and 479 pound-feet of oomph.
Power is channeled to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
The Audi RS6 features a 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V-8 mill under the hood that makes 600 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque.
It is also equipped with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. The eight-speed torque converter routes power to all four wheels.
The Stelvio Quadrifoglio weighs 4,034 pounds, around 220 pounds heavier than the 3,814-pound BMW M4 Competition, but around 550 pounds lighter than the 4,575-pound RS6. This makes the RS6 over 750 pounds heavier than the BMW. An advantage for the Bimmer? It must be noted that the Germans come with a Launch Control, but the Italian SUV doesn’t.
All The Vehicles Had Their Moments To Shine
In the first drag race, the Alfa Romeo got the best start despite no launch control. The Audi RS6 closely followed and managed to edge it mid-way. The BMW had a poor start but it got quite close in the end. It seemed like it would’ve gone past both, the Audi and the Alfa Romeo, if it had some more distance to work with. In the end, the Audi RS6 came first and finished the quarter-mile in 11.7 seconds. The Alfa Romeo came second with a time of 11.8 seconds, and the BMW had to settle for the last place with a time of 11.9 seconds. Pretty close, huh?
Next up was the rolling race from 50 mph in the comfort setting. The Germans had the best kickdown while the Stelvio never really matched them. The BMW, however, just flew past the Audi too, leaving both the wagon and the SUV in the dust while it dominated this race. The next rolling race was also from 50 mph, but locked in third gear and in the sportiest setting. The Audi was the slowest to get going despite a V-8 under the hood. The BMW, yet again, took off. The Alfa Romeo had a decent start, but at around 100 mph, the Audi went past it to let it lurk behind the Germans.
As for the brake test from 70 mph, the M4 stopped in the shortest distance, then the Stelvio Quadrifoglio, and finally the RS6 that took the longest distance to come to a halt.
