Because X-Tomi Design just did all the imagining for us and turned it into reality, albeit digitally
by Isaac Atienza, onSubaru’s first-ever electric vehicle (EV) made its debut recently, and it’s no surprise that it looks similar to the Toyota bZ4X but with a tiny amount of Subaru’s design language thrown into the mix. The chances of an STI version are slim to none, but what if Subaru made one?
From the imagination of X-Tomi Design, this is what a Solterra STI would probably look like. Not a lot has changed from the original model, but the tweaks do make the Solterra look more like an actual Subaru vehicle rather than one that’s been jointly designed with Toyota.
The most noticeable changes are the body-colored wheel arches, the sportier front spoiler, bigger alloy wheels, and the striking blue paint. Oddly enough, this rendering gives the Solterra an STI mesh grille and even a hood scoop, which is close to useless in a car that rides on a bespoke electric vehicle platform. It’s also the reason why the Solterra looks less like an EV but more like a traditional crossover with an internal combustion engine.
Further separating itself from the standard Solterra is its contrasting black roof and lowered ride height, which gives the EV a more purposeful and sportier look. The rear spoiler looks like it has been enlarged as well.
The Subaru Solterra made its debut a few days ago and is the company’s first attempt at making a fully-electric crossover SUV. The vehicle is a joint development with Toyota, which has been slow to adapt to a world where electric vehicles are slowly becoming mainstream.
The Solterra is powered by either a single- or twin-motor system that’s shared with the bZ4X. The former is front-wheel drive (FWD) and has an output of 201 horsepower, while the latter is all-wheel drive (AWD) and has an output of 215 horsepower. 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) times for the two models are 8.4 seconds for the FWD model, while the AWD model does the same job in 7.7 seconds.
A high-performance Subaru Solterra STI probably won’t happen anytime soon, but this could serve as an inspiration for the aftermarket scene to produce parts that make the Solterra or even the bZ4X look sportier and more attractive.
