The Best LEGO Creator and Technic Sets You Must Have in 2019

Molsheim’s very own Bugatti Chiron, just like the Veyron, has been sitting nicely at the pinnacle of the automotive industry since its day one. The same can pretty much be said about the LEGO Technic Bugatti Chiron we have here. And it’s not just about the price tag, mind you. People tend to say this is the Chiron you can actually afford but come to think of it; this is still a $349.99 high-maintenance machine. And don’t you ever call it a toy unless you want an angry pack of LEGO geeks on your tail. Seriously, don’t.

The 1:8 scale model LEGO Technic Chiron comprises 3,599 pieces that help replicate the mighty W-16 engine with moving pistons as well as other mind-blowing details such as brake discs, active rear wing, and exterior appearance. We imagine Bugatti’s designers worked closely with LEGO’s so that the finite product can look just like a miniature Chiron that retains the iconic dual color scheme. You’ll also want to know that the set is suitable for every age above 16 and and when finished, the bricky Chiron measures is over five inches (14 centimeters) high, 22 inches (56 centimeters) long, and 12.5 inches (32 centimeters) wide. Ford Mustang (LEGO Creator)

You can’t really spell “American car culture” without the Mustang. Sure, this year’s biggest hype came from the US involved Chevrolet’s paradigm-changing 2020 Corvette C8 Stingray and its mid-mounted V-8 but even so, the Ford Mustang remains one of America’s sweethearts. Europe’s as well, where the pony car has been riding the high sales tide in countries like Germany, which gave the world BMW Ms and Mercedes-Benz AMGs, as well as Porsches. Naturally, when we got word that LEGO is selling a 1960s Ford Mustang Fastback-based set, our interest piqued.

Priced at $149.99, the Mustang LEGO set is developed under the Creator series and uses 1,471 pieces. What really got us head over heels, however, is the dark blue body paint adorned with white racing stripes that flow towards the back of the car and the detailed big-block 390 V-8 that sits under the hood. You also get period-correct wheel designs and a couple of customising options in the likes of a supercharger, rear ducktail spoiler, beefier exhaust pipes, and nitrous oxide tank. You know, for the Fast & Furious fans out there. When completed, the LEGO Creator Ford Mustang is over three inches (10 centimeters) high, 13 inches (34 centimeters) long, and five inches (14 centimeters) wide, so it has the footprint of a regular-size magazine, which means it can be placed pretty much everywhere. Volkswagen T1 Camper Van (LEGO Creator)

Known as the Volkswagen Type 2, the Microbus, Splitscreen or Splittie, the VW T1 was very similar to the Beetle in the sense that it packed the same 1100 air-cooled engine mounted at the rear. The motor displaced 1,131 cubic centimeters and put out a shy 24 horsepower, but through various upgrades, it was taken to a power output of 40 horsepower. It even got a more upmarket version called Samba, which arrived in the US as the Sunroof Deluxe, which was painted in two colors, with the upper part getting the white lick of paint. The lower section was the flashier, with red being a popular choice. Which happens to be the same color scheme LEGO has chosen for the T1 Camper Van set.

Chromatics aside, the T1 also retains the split windshield and the V-shaped ornament on the front grille. On top of that, the T1 Camper Van has a textile curtain that surrounds the pop-out roof, rear side air vents, opening doors, and a faithful replica of the flat-four boxer engine that used to power its life-size metal peers. The T1 Camper LEGO Creator set has 1,334 pieces and once fully assembled, stretches to 11.8 inches (30 centimeters) long and 5.5 inches (14 centimeters) high. 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon and 1970 Charger R/T (LEGO Speed Champions)

Speed Champions sets rank high in our all-time LEGO favorites. For starters, they contain downright sacred monsters of the car industry condensed to a size that’s both desk- and budget-friendly. On the plus side, some of them do a stunning job in mirroring their real-life counterparts, and with some many such examples to choose from, it was hard to take a pick. However, we wanted to recommend a set that’s among the new ones released this year, so after another look at the rooster, it had to be the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon and 1970 Dodge Charger R/T one.

Now, neither of the two cars needs further presentation, but we’d like to exemplify even further why we absolutely love this set. For starters, the two muscle cars are perfect renderings of that inherent boxiness American muscle cars tend to display, which means a LEGO twist will work better than with a curvier car. Secondly, you get a miniature Hellcat which is still a Hellcat and a bloody Vin Diesel-style Charger R/T with a supercharger protruding through the hood. Name on thing that screams ‘Murica louder. We dare you. Last but not least, some LEGO Speed Champions sets come with a bucketload of stickers, but not this one - veteran Speed Champions fans know what we mean. James Bond Aston Martin DB5 (LEGO Creator)

Have you ever looked at THAT picture of Sean Connery as James Bond, casually leaning against the DB5 on one of the posters from Goldfinger and thought: man, you’ll have a hard time finding a man-machine duo that looks cooler. Because we know we have. And again, LEGO comes to the rescue, since for most of us, the option of owning the exquisite Aston Martin DB5 is far-fetched, to say the least. Coming back to the plasticky DB5, you should know it is too a Creator set that won’t put a hole through your wallet and pockets. It is priced at $149.99 and packs the real thing’s styling cues and even the cheeky gadgets provided by Q.

The interior is fitted with a reinterpreted radar tracker and it even sports the notorious seat ejector. Then there’s the revolving number plates (yes, they actually work, as every other quirk that follows), the rear-window bulletproof screen, the tyre scythes, and the front wing machine guns. That’s a lot of goodies for a set that’s made of just 1,295 pieces. Oh, we almost forgot: the straight-six engine got its fair share of detailing, so you’re looking at an all rounder, really. It’s also true that we might have liked a livelier body color, but since the original DB5 came in silver, LEGO had to abide by that one way or the other, so they went for the genuine Silver Birch coating. Either way, we’d have the LEGO Creator Aston Martin DB5 any day of the week, so no complaining here. Check it out on Amazon:

4x4 Extreme Off-Roader (LEGO Technic)

We thought we’d keep things spicy and interesting so this LEGO set isn’t trying to replicate the looks and features of a real car. Instead, it proposes a rad off-roader with monster truck-like wheels and three small electric motors. The end result? One build that oozes badassery through all its nooks and crannies. What’s even cooler is that this is a LEGO Technic set, which means you get to steer it via the LEGO Technic Control+ app. And by steer, we don’t mean just left, and right turns, but also drives forward, backward, and can obviously subdue pretty much you throw in its path thanks to the independent suspension on all four corners. Moreover, you can drag a direction of movement within the app on your smart device’s screen and then watch the 4x4 execute the command.

Fully assembled, the off-roader is seven inches (19 centimeters) high, 12 inches (33 centimeters) long, and eight inches (22 centimeters) wide. Harley-Davidson Fat Boy (LEGO Creator)

Hang in there, motorcycle fans. We didn’t forget about you. Neither did LEGO, if we are, to be honest. Or Harley-Davidson. The first collabo between the two brands has spawned the LEGO Creator Fat Boy bike, a plasticky replica of the famous motorcycle. Just like you’d expect, it packs all sorts of finer details as seen on the real motorbike. These include the solid-disc Lakester wheels shod in beefy tires and the trademark teardrop-shaped fuel tank. And we’re not done yet. The LEGO version of the Fat Boy houses a miniature Milwaukee-Eight engine with moving pistons. Coming out of the engine is a pair of exhaust pipes, and we’re pretty sure you’ve already spotted the dark red and black color scheme.

Once you assembly the bike, it will be seven inches high (20 centimeters), almost 7 inches wide (18 centimeters), and 12 inches (33 centimeters) long.
