Edmunds recently got to pit these two top-tier Mustang's against each other at Willow Springs
In the yellow corner, we have the new kid on the block, i.e Mach-E GT Performance. Its dual-electric motors provide AWD traction churning out 480hp and 634 lb-ft of torque
In the orange corner, we have an old favorite in the form of the Mustang GT500, which produces a 5.2 L Supercharged V-8 engine, which produces 760 hp and 625 lb-ft of torque
The Mach-E GT weighs over 800 lbs and provides full power for only five seconds. Now we know that EVs provide instant torque, but is the window long enough to keep the GT500 at bay
Well, you're about to find out as both cars line up for the launch
The hammer drops and it comes as no surprise that the Mach-E got the better launch
However, that wasn't the case by the time they got to the 1/4 mile line as the Mach-E ran out of steam and the GT500 just about managed to clinch the win
Just to be absolutely sure
The pair turn around for a second round two
This time round, although the Mach-E GT was ahead once again, its lead was short-lived as the GT500 on warmer tires was much closer and the gas-powered car took round two as well
The last and final round was roll race from 30 mph
They get past the cones and hammer it down the straight
And just as before, the EV was ahead, but the GT500 was in the meat of its powerband
Managing to pull a big lead on the Mach-E GT, taking a definitive win with at trap speed of 130 mph
Both Mustang's have a similar sub-four-second 0-60 mph time, but the Shelby is in its element once it gets some momentum
Now the Mustang Mach-E GT performance is a steller effort from the Blue Oval, and this would have been a much closer battle if it had full power for just a little longer
Maybe Ford can do that via an OTA, but until then the GT500 reigns supreme over the 1/4 mile. Swipe Up to read and watch this drag race unfold on video.
