All this is part of the $17.6 billion-‘Nissan Ambition 2030’ vision, and the automaker gave us a glimpse of it by revealing four funky concepts

The latest automaker to do so is the Japanese giant Nissan. Nissan has revealed its ‘Nissan Ambition 2030’ plan that includes 23 electrified models coming out of the automaker’s stable this decade. To give a glimpse of what to expect, Nissan has revealed four EV concepts. None of them are anywhere close to a production model, but this shows Nissan will re-shape itself as an EVmaker in the ongoing paradigm shift.
Nissan Chill-Out
The automaker describes the Chill Out concept as a ‘mobile haven’. The crossover is based on the CMF-EV platform and will feature e-4ORCE technology. For the uninitiated, the e-4ORCE is Nissan’s all-wheel-drive tech for EVs. The system makes use of a dual-motor setup. It was first showcased at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show.
The system was plonked in a Leaf e+ test car.
The concept is also said to feature a sleek and modern design, a productive interior, and advanced safety tech.
Nissan Max-Out
This two-seater convertible is aimed at offering a new driving experience. The sports concept will come with ‘dynamic cornering and steering response’ that limit the body roll and make it fun-to-drive. Nissan claims it to be ultra-lightweight (perhaps as per EV standards because EVs are generally quite heavy!), a low center of gravity, and an advanced e-4ORCE system.
Nissan also mentioned that the Max Out has the ability to morph the steering and flatten into the floor to offer more interior space when need be.
Nissan Surf-Out
This pickup truck-like concept is more of a recreational vehicle and not a conventional pickup truck from the looks of it; something like the Hyundai Santa Cruz. The concept has a variety of power outputs and features the advanced e-4ORCE system to aid off-road performance.
The low and flat cargo space will make sure you don’t run out of space anytime.
Nissan Hang-Out
The last “out’ concept is a little urban commuter called the Hang-Out. With this concept, Nissan aims to break the shackles of a conventional interior and provide ‘a new way of spending time on the move’. The concept has a theater-like seating setup and could have swivel chairs.
The concept has a flat floor and will feature a dual-motor setup along with the advanced e-4ORCE system. Nissan’s ProPilot autonomous technology will be available too.
A Skateboard-like Platform Underpins The Concepts
Nissan also mentioned that the Max-Out, Surf-Out, and Hang-Out are based on a skateboard-like platform and integrate solid-state battery tech. Solid-state batteries are still a long time away. BMW had earlier mentioned that solid-state batteries aren’t coming until 2027. The automaker even showcased a futuristic concept a couple of months back called the i Vision Circular concept that was powered by solid-state batteries. Nissan is also claiming a timeline of 2028 for the same.
This platform is versatile and will accommodate various types of vehicles and software configurations for the same. The vehicles based on the platform will support a dual-motor setup, will be ultralight, and have a very low center of gravity. And, as mentioned in the concept descriptions, the cars based on this platform will support advanced e-4ORCE and advanced ProPilot technologies.
What Is The ‘Nissan Ambition 2030’ Vision?
The ‘Nissan Ambition 2030’ is the Japanese automaker’s long-term vision for electrification.
Nissan will be pumping in 2 trillion yen (approximately $17.6 billion as per the current exchange rates) in electrification over the course of the next five years. 23 new electrified models including 15 battery-electric vehicles are a part of this vision and will be spread across the Nissan and Infiniti brands.
The plan also aims at a 50-percent electrification mix by 2030.
As mentioned earlier, Nissan will bring in solid-state batteries by 2028. Until then, it will keep improving the lithium-ion battery tech before eventually getting the cobalt-free batteries by the said timeline and bring down the cost by 65-percent. A pilot plant for EVs powered by solid-state batteries will be launched in 2024.
