Sold out since early 2015, the current-generation Porsche 911 GT3 has finally returned into dealerships with updates similar to the 991.2 911. Unveiled at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, the track-prepped 911 is making a comeback after nearly two years with revised styling, a retuned chassis, and more importantly a new drivetrain.
Not surprisingly, the race-bred coupe didn’t change much inside and out, and most of the new stuff is borrowed from the regular 911 that was upgraded in 2016. However, the revised chassis brings new dynamics, while the troublesome 3.8-liter flat-six was replaced by the slightly bigger, 4.0-liter unit from the GT3 Cup race car and the range-topping GT3 RS. The really big news about the new 911 GT3 is that Porsche finally brought the manual transmission back, giving enthusiasts a new reason to celebrate..
Developed on the same test track and manufactured on the same production line as the 911 race cars, the GT3 returns to a market that has a brand-new competitor, the Mercedes-AMG GT R. Launched in 2016, the AMG GT R is the first track-prepped car to actually compete in the same niche, something that hasn’t happened in quite a few years. The Porsche 911 GT3 has been around since 1999, continuing Stuttgart’s habit of unleashing high-performance spec iterations of its iconic sports car originally started in the ‘70s with the incredible Carrera RS. Now, with the imminent arrival of an all-new 911 (also known as the 992 generation) by the end of 2018, we’ve been waiting for details on the next GT3. Unveiled at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, the 911 GT3 with the Touring Package is essentially a slightly more comfortable version of the track. It’s still fast and powerful, but more usable on public roads. More importantly, it doesn’t have the massive wing atop the engine lid. We like to call it the love child between the 911 GT3 and the strictly limited 911 R. Needless to say, a Cabriolet model would be a nice way to send the current GT3 into the history books, but is this mule a beefed-up drop-top or are we actually looking at the 911 Speedster? It’s difficult to say at this point, but a 911 GT3 Touring Convertible would be a really cool idea.

Video of the Day: Watch Laurens Vanthoor drive the Porsche 911 GT3 R to a Record Lap During the Nurburgring 24 Hours
Being fast doesn’t necessarily guarantee you a win at the Nurburgring 24 Hours, but it could guarantee you a record-breaking lap. That’s exactly what happened to Laurens Vanthoor, who drove his No. 911 Porsche 911 GT3 R around the Nurburgring track in just 8:09.10. Eventually, Vanthoor went on to crash, so there was no chance for him to win the race, but at least he still made his way into the history books before that happened. The best part is that we have the in-car footage of his record-breaking lap. Check it out for yourself below!

When it comes to the sports car segment, natural aspiration (that is, no supercharger or turbocharger) makes for loads of good stuff, including a robust torque curve and a high redline, not to mention one helluva sound. And while most manufacturers are ceding to the demands of ever-higher efficiency by adding boost to the mix, it’s rumored Porsche could cling to its all-atmosphere powerplants for at least a little while longer.

Porsche Just Set a New Personal Best Around the Nurburgring With the 911 GT3 RS
As is tradition among the fastest of the fast, the latest Porsche 911 GT3 RS (also known as the 991.2 generation) went to the Nurburgring recently to test its mettle (and its metal) against nearly 13 miles of technical and challenging race corners. All told, the mean and green speed machine ripped around the Nordschleife in what appears to be a new personal best for the nameplate, as exhibited in a recent video posted to YouTube by user xthilox. Hit play below to hear well over 500 horses at full chat while the Porsche in question slingshots around the German corners with cartoonish velocity.
The new 911’s upgrades should make it quicker than the outgoing generation, which set a maxed-out time around the Green Hell at 7 minutes, 12 seconds. What’s more, the car featured here is equipped with the lightness-adding Weissach package, which cuts a total of 18 kg (39.7 pounds) from the final curb weight. It also beefs up the suspension with CFRP components for the front and rear anti-roll bars and coupling rods, while the composite material is added to the roof and front lid. Optional forged magnesium wheels are in the corners.
Rumor has it all that good stuff enabled this Stuttgart superstar to post a fastest lap of 6 minutes, 56 seconds. If true, that would make it quicker than the Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 Superveloce and about as quick as the Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid monster, but not quite as quick as the latest Porsche 911 GT2 RS, which ran a 6:47 last September. It’s impressive stuff all the same.
