The manual transmission returns!

Sold out since early 2015, the current-generation Porsche 911 GT3 has finally returned into dealerships with updates similar to the 991.2 911. Unveiled at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, the track-prepped 911 is making a comeback after nearly two years with revised styling, a retuned chassis, and more importantly a new drivetrain.

Not surprisingly, the race-bred coupe didn’t change much inside and out, and most of the new stuff is borrowed from the regular 911 that was upgraded in 2016. However, the revised chassis brings new dynamics, while the troublesome 3.8-liter flat-six was replaced by the slightly bigger, 4.0-liter unit from the GT3 Cup race car and the range-topping GT3 RS. The really big news about the new 911 GT3 is that Porsche finally brought the manual transmission back, giving enthusiasts a new reason to celebrate..

Developed on the same test track and manufactured on the same production line as the 911 race cars, the GT3 returns to a market that has a brand-new competitor, the Mercedes-AMG GT R. Launched in 2016, the AMG GT R is the first track-prepped car to actually compete in the same niche, something that hasn’t happened in quite a few years. Will the 911 GT3 continue to dominate this demanding segment? Let’s find out in the review below.

Porsche 911 GT3 Touring Makes a Strong Case For Manual Cars At The Autobahn

This manual Porsche 911 GT3 Touring goes over 190 mph on the Autobahn, makes a strong case for stick shift cars

The Porsche 911 GT3 is the ultimate, normally-aspirated 911 and the YouTube channel AutoTopNL recently got its hands on a 992 GT3 Touring – the more street-oriented, “less shouty” version of the normally-aspirated track weapon, without the crazy aero. And while race tracks are the home of the GT3, here, we see how capable the wingless version is, on the Autobahn. Is the “purest 911” capable enough, in the age of turbocharged performance cars?

Can a 1972 Beetle with an electric powertrain beat a stock 991 Porsche 911 GT3 RS on the drag strip?

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS is arguably one of the best internal combustion-engined cars on the drag strip. It has even beaten the likes of the Audi R8 Spyder. So, why even bother to put it up against an old-school, 1970s Volkswagen Beetle? Well, because this Beetle has been electrified and makes 450 horses! The Porsche makes more horsepower, but can the instant torque of the Beetle prove to be too much for the sports car?

Porsche is hard at work on the more track-focused Porsche 911 GT3 RS (992)

With the “regular” 911 (992) GT3 out and official, all eyes are now headed towards the GT3 RS. As expected, the more hardcore version of the already hardcore GT3 will feature more of everything - except for the weight, of which it will have less. The most important thing is that the latest most track-focused normally-aspirated 911 is underway, and here’s what we can expect.

Updated 09/24/2021: The upcoming Porsche 911 GT3 RS was caught testing again, this time on the roads around the Nürburgring as well as on the track. Check out the story for new details on the future sports car!

The folks at Carwow brought in the 991 Porsche 911 GT3 RS to take on the new 992 911 GT3 on a drag strip. No, This Isn’t a Porsche 911 GT3 RS Cabriolet, but it Sure Does Look Like It

If You Have Ever Wondered How a 991 GT3 RS Cabriolet Would Look, a California Shop Gives You The Answer

We recently covered some pretty epic Porsche conversions and this one would fit right in. The 911 GT3 RS never had a cabriolet version, so you have to make one yourself. There are two ways to go about it. The first one involves taking a GT3 RS and chopping its roof off. The second way is to get a lesser 911 Cabriolet and slap the body panels from a GT3 RS. Obviously, the latter is much easier, which is why Wicked Motor Work from California did exactly that.

They don’t make the 911 like this anymore, but thanks to Photoshop, we can see what the 911 could look like today

If you, like me, are fascinated by the Porsche 911, you’ve probably heard the motto “evolution, not revolution”. It’s the philosophy by which the 911 is based on since its inception back in the 1960s. And, although the rear-engine sports car is still faithful to its roots (as much as possible), the YouTube channel “TheSketchMonkey” points out 911’s gradual deviation from its traditional design to a more generic one, especially with regards to its rear end. In order to explain, the YouTuber shows us what the 992 GT3 Touring may look like if Porsche went with its original 911 design.

Today’s sports cars and race cars are a lot more reliable than those of the previous decade. Porsche 911 GT3 - A Complete History

Porsche 911 GT3 - A Complete History

The story of a legendary nameplate sitting next to another legendary nameplate

Porsche is known for continuously bringing race-bred technology into its road cars. The Stuttgart-based manufacturer that has been perfecting the rear-engine formula for over five decades now is also famous for its homologation specials, road-worthy counterparts built by Porsche to race thoroughbred competition machinery in production-based classes of sports car racing. 20 years ago, Porsche introduced the latest model that would spawn a myriad of racing versions: the Porsche 911 GT3, a track-oriented 911 that could be used as a daily driver (if you dared). It came at the same time as the not-for-the-purist 996 generation but, in spite of this, can you now imagine a world without the 911 GT3 in it?

Where were you in 1999 when Porsche unveiled the 996.1-generation Porsche 911 GT3? Well, you probably weren’t at the Geneva Auto Show where Porsche took the wraps of what was, in essence, the road-legal version of the newest Porsche 911 Cup car that would compete in the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany and later in the Porsche Supercup sharing the bill with the Formula 1 World Championship. The first 911 GT3 looked a bit tame but, as years rolled by, it evolved, growing bigger, more aggressive, and more insane and overshadowed with ease the 911 GT2, a model we originally thought it’d replace before Porsche decided to continue making GT2 models, somewhat as even more extreme versions of the 911. This is the story of the GT3, a model more famous than all of the track-focused 911s that have come before it, even the Carrera RS 2.7 of 1973.

Is the 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 The Last Non-Hybrid GT3?

Here’s why investing in a 992 GT3 might be a good idea

By now we know that almost every manufacturer is heading in the direction of electrification. More and more internal combustion engine cars feature mild or plug-in hybrid technology in order to reduce the negative impact on the environment and cover the latest strictest emissions regulations. Porsche – a manufacturer set on tradition, at least when it comes to their 911 model – has also started down that road. They even introduced a fully-electric car – the Taycan. Moreover, the Panamera and 911 Turbo S now feature mild-hybrid technology. There is one Porsche, however, that stays true to its roots – the GT3 – and the YouTube channel MotorHeads does a good job of introducing you to the ins and outs of it.

2022 Porsche 911 GT3

Will it break from tradition?

The Porsche 911 GT3 has been around since 1999, continuing Stuttgart’s habit of unleashing high-performance spec iterations of its iconic sports car originally started in the ‘70s with the incredible Carrera RS. Now, with the imminent arrival of an all-new 911 (also known as the 992 generation) by the end of 2018, we’ve been waiting for details on the next GT3. Luckily, it looks like we got just that, as our spy photographers snapped a few shots of a possible undercover 992-spec GT3 out and about undergoing some cold weather testing. As such, we drew up a quick speculative review on what to expect.

Update 2/16/2021: The new Porsche 911 GT3 has debuted. We’re busy updating this review, but you can find out all you need to know right now in our recent article or check out the gallery below!

Bet You Never Thought You’d See a Porsche 911 GT3 That’s Powered By a Motorcycle Engine

And yet, here it is

The Porsche 911 has been the subject of many engine swaps over the years. In fact, the Neunelfer has seen its fair share of LS engines being dropped under its tail, but nobody ever thought of fitting a motorcycle engine inside the 911. Or, if they thought about it, they didn’t get to do it. Mind you, the 911 you’re about to see is not a real 911. We mean, it’s real, but it started out life as a toy. Yet somehow, someone crammed a KTM dirt bike motor under its hood and we can’t stop drooling.

Fearing the Future? Don’t - Porsche Has Plans to keep its Naturally Aspirated Engines and Manual Gearboxes Beyond the EV Onslaught

EVs Are Good and All, but Nothing Can Replace ICE Growl. Porsche GT Will Continue To Produce It For As Long As Possible

Last year Porsche sold between 3,000 and 4,000 GT cars. These machines, developed and produced by Porsche’s GT division, are as close as you can get to a race car while still being able to drive them on the street. Porsche’s GT division, then, is a Mecca for proper gearheads and track enthusiasts who like the cars as they are (manual and burning fuel), and those who are not afraid to spend some serious money on their hobby. I am writing here about vehicles like the Porsche 911 GT3 or the 911 GT2.

With such a dedicated (and wealthy) community of enthusiastic customers, Porsche’s GT division seems to be safe from the electrification that fell on the world of cars in recent years.

Andreas Preuninger, the head of Porsche’s GT division acknowledged that electrification wouldn’t come to Porsche GT cars soon. In fact, we can expect these vehicles to sport naturally aspirated engines and a manual transmission for as long as there is a proper demand. And it seems that the demand is stronger than ever.

Relieve Some Stress With This Porsche 911 GT3 Track Therapy Video!

It’s 11 minutes worth of free therapy that you won’t get anywhere else

If life’s doldrums are kicking into high gear, I have something that should calm your sensibilities long enough for you to shed at least a little stress. That “something” is an 11-minute video on YouTube featuring nothing but the Porsche 911 GT3casually going about its business on a race track. I say “casually” because the GT3 looks like it’s going through the motions on the race track. But there’s nothing casual about the sound of that naturally aspirated Porsche flat-six filling our ears. It’s relaxing, chilling, and therapeutic, converging all at once to fill our minds with the kind of chill that should get us through the week. Dial up the volume, folks. This 11-minute video is your go-to video of the day.

Circuit-ready Holy Trinity head to head battle

Ferrari, McLaren, and Porsche are three automakers renowned for making many superb track-honed models over the years, and the latest names to keep that flame going are 488 Pista, 600LT and 911 GT3 RS. All these cars are roughly in the same price bracket and are comparable in terms of performance. Yet, the way they achieve (and deliver) said performance is quite different from car to car.

The 992-Gen 2021 Porsche 911 GT3 RS Will Remain Fully Aspirated and Feature a Surprise Upgrade

Fear not, purists - the Stuttgart superstar is staying true to its roots

When it comes to track-proven performance, the Porsche 911 GT3 and GT3 RS are some of the most impressive nameplates around. Now, with the arrival of the new 992-generation 911 for the 2020 model year, the GT3 and GT3 RS are poised for an update, and as rumor has it the good times will keep on a’rolling with the same formula we know and love - power at the rear, as little weight as possible, and a high-strung six-cylinder for motivation. Even better is the suggestion that the Porsche’s lump of go will be a larger all-atmospheric six-cylinder, now with a few extra cc’s added on top.

Say goodbye to the naturally aspirated 911

The Porsche 911 GT3, currently the only 911 fitted with a naturally aspirated engine, will become turbocharged for the next generation. That’s the word from Autocar, quoting a "Stuttgart-based source with direct links to Porsche Motorsport."

2020 Porsche 911 GT3 Touring Cabriolet

2020 Porsche 911 GT3 Touring Cabriolet

The iconic GT3 goes topless

An instant classic ever since it was introduced back in 1999, the Porsche 911 GT3 is living its final years as a naturally aspirated sports car, with rumors suggesting that it may go turbo for the next generation. With both the GT3 and GT3 RS models having received their updates for the 991 generation, Porsche may be preparing a new model before the 992-gen 911 arrives. The latest spy shots we received from our paparazzi suggest that Porsche might be working on a convertible version of the GT3 Touring.

Unveiled at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, the 911 GT3 with the Touring Package is essentially a slightly more comfortable version of the track. It’s still fast and powerful, but more usable on public roads. More importantly, it doesn’t have the massive wing atop the engine lid. We like to call it the love child between the 911 GT3 and the strictly limited 911 R. Needless to say, a Cabriolet model would be a nice way to send the current GT3 into the history books, but is this mule a beefed-up drop-top or are we actually looking at the 911 Speedster? It’s difficult to say at this point, but a 911 GT3 Touring Convertible would be a really cool idea.

Video of the Day: Watch Laurens Vanthoor drive the Porsche 911 GT3 R to a Record Lap During the Nurburgring 24 Hours

It’s fast, oh so fast

Being fast doesn’t necessarily guarantee you a win at the Nurburgring 24 Hours, but it could guarantee you a record-breaking lap. That’s exactly what happened to Laurens Vanthoor, who drove his No. 911 Porsche 911 GT3 R around the Nurburgring track in just 8:09.10. Eventually, Vanthoor went on to crash, so there was no chance for him to win the race, but at least he still made his way into the history books before that happened. The best part is that we have the in-car footage of his record-breaking lap. Check it out for yourself below!

Porsche’s Flat Six Just Might Carry On a Bit Longer Without Turbos and a 9,500 RPM Redline!

Old habits die hard

When it comes to the sports car segment, natural aspiration (that is, no supercharger or turbocharger) makes for loads of good stuff, including a robust torque curve and a high redline, not to mention one helluva sound. And while most manufacturers are ceding to the demands of ever-higher efficiency by adding boost to the mix, it’s rumored Porsche could cling to its all-atmosphere powerplants for at least a little while longer.

Porsche Just Set a New Personal Best Around the Nurburgring With the 911 GT3 RS

Porsche Just Set a New Personal Best Around the Nurburgring With the 911 GT3 RS

The green paint probably helped a bit…

As is tradition among the fastest of the fast, the latest Porsche 911 GT3 RS (also known as the 991.2 generation) went to the Nurburgring recently to test its mettle (and its metal) against nearly 13 miles of technical and challenging race corners. All told, the mean and green speed machine ripped around the Nordschleife in what appears to be a new personal best for the nameplate, as exhibited in a recent video posted to YouTube by user xthilox. Hit play below to hear well over 500 horses at full chat while the Porsche in question slingshots around the German corners with cartoonish velocity.

The new 911’s upgrades should make it quicker than the outgoing generation, which set a maxed-out time around the Green Hell at 7 minutes, 12 seconds. What’s more, the car featured here is equipped with the lightness-adding Weissach package, which cuts a total of 18 kg (39.7 pounds) from the final curb weight. It also beefs up the suspension with CFRP components for the front and rear anti-roll bars and coupling rods, while the composite material is added to the roof and front lid. Optional forged magnesium wheels are in the corners.

Rumor has it all that good stuff enabled this Stuttgart superstar to post a fastest lap of 6 minutes, 56 seconds. If true, that would make it quicker than the Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 Superveloce and about as quick as the Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid monster, but not quite as quick as the latest Porsche 911 GT2 RS, which ran a 6:47 last September. It’s impressive stuff all the same.
