The Mission E concept goes into production as Porsche’s answer to the Tesla Model S

The Porsche Taycan is an all-electric sports sedan based on the Mission E concept. It’s also Porsche’s first-ever production electric car, designed to go against the Tesla Model S. Previewed by the Mission E concept, the Taycan sports design features borrowed from the show car, but also includes styling features seen on the Panamera sedan and 911 sports car. Powered by a couple of electric motors, the Taycan generates in excess of 700 horsepower in its range-topping version.

While considered laughable just a decade or two ago, the idea of a high-performance electric vehicle is now widely accepted in even the most traditional of speed circles. Porsche took full advantage of this and designed a sleeker Panamera that’s notably more powerful and quicker. Granted, it’s not as spectacular as the Mission E concept, but it’s definitely an exotic appearance even when compared to full-fledged sports cars. However, does it have what it takes to compete with the Tesla Model S? Let’s find out in the detailed review below.

Updated 10/14/2019: Porsche added a new member to its Taycan lineup. The new Taycan 4S has been announced in two different battery configurations. Check the Drivetrain section for more details.

Fastest Electric Cars in the World

Some of these electric cars come with ridiculous specs and seem too good to be true!

There is no dearth of electric cars in the market now. We aren’t just talking about the urban commuters, but also fast electric cars. There are many new automakers that start their electric car journey with fast cars or electric supercars. Companies like Estrema, Aspark, and even Tesla, for that matter, came up with fast electric sports cars or electric supercars. While some have faded into oblivion after showing us promising concepts, some have weathered the storm and are either into production or will enter production.

Here’s a list of the eight fastest electric cars in the world today that are in the production stage or about to enter production. Some of these fast cars are from mainstream automakers, some from established EVmakers, and some from new start-ups.

Porsche Just Expanded the Taycan Lineup with the new Taycan GTS and Sport Turismo

The Taycan lineup is growing so fast that it could almost be its own sub-brand

The Taycan has been Porsche’s best-selling non-SUV so far in 2021, so it was no surprise when Porsche ushered in some pretty decent improvements for the 2020 model year, nor was it a surprise when the brand launched the off-road focused Taycan Cross Turismo. It’s pretty obvious that Porsche is dead set on expanding the Taycan into what could almost be its own standalone brand, with rumors indicating that we could even see a Taycan Coupe, Turismo, or road-focused Sport Turismo wagon. Well, as it turns out, Porsche showed up to the L.A. Auto Show with not one but two new Taycans – the aforementioned Taycan Sport Turismo and the new Taycan GTS. It seems Christmas has come a little early this year, folks.

Can The Taycan Turbo S Pull A Win Over The Unconquerable 911 Turbo S?

If history suggests anything, then the EV should win this race; but will the 911 Turbo S bow down so easily?

When EVs take on internal combustion engines, they win almost always. Cars like the Tesla Model S Plaid have beaten some of the beloved heavyweights, like the SF90 Stradale, the Nissan GT-R, the Lamborghini Huracan, etc. However, its chief rival, the Porsche Taycan, hasn’t had the same impact. So, how does the Taycan, in the top-spec Turbo S trim, perform against one of the best internal combustion-engined cars on the drag strip, the Porsche 911 Turbo S? Let’s find out.

Outside of SUVs the Porsche Taycan is Porsche’s best-selling model so far in 2021 - how crazy is that?

In a world where crossovers and SUVs reign supreme, it is no surprise that the Porsche Cayenne and Macan continue to be the brand’s best-sellers. For the rest of Porsche’s model lineup though, the all-electric Taycan sits comfortably in third, making it the best-selling non-SUV Porsche so far this year.

More colors, among other things are welcome additions to the electric sports sedan.

The 2022 Taycan Has Been Improved In Ways That You Can't Imagine

The 2022 Taycan Has Been Improved In Ways That You Can’t Imagine

Rubystone Red pays tribute to the classic 964-generation 911 models

Updating cars on a year-to-year basis is becoming a new trend, and the Taycan is the latest model to jump on that bandwagon. For 2022, Porsche has improved the Taycan dramatically, with all updates geared toward making day-to-day use easier. It all starts with Normal and Range modes. When these modes are engaged, the front motor is almost completely decoupled and de-energized. And an new computer algorithm allows both motors to disengage when the car is coasting or at a standstill, something that also helps increase usable range.

Beyond this, Porsche has updated the Taycan’s thermal management system with the goal of optimizing the drivetrain. The battery can now be heated to a slightly higher temperature, which allows for fast charting earlier and at a higher charge level – something that reduces the amount of time required to charge. Even better, the excess heat from electrical components is now used to a greater extent to regulate the battery’s temperature.

Alongside these new upgrades, Porsche is now offering the Taycan with Remote Park Assist that will allow you to park it with your smartphone and Android Auto has finally been integrated into the sixth-generation PCM infotainment system. The Taycan can also be ordered through the paint-to-sample and paint-to-sample plus programs, the first one of which includes up to 65 available colors, like the cool red you see here.

The Porsche Taycan Turbo S is the most powerful Taycan you can buy today. The car is even more powerful than the Taycan model that currently holds the record for being the fastest four-door EV on the Nurburgring. But, after enjoying dominance for some time, the Taycan Turbo S is finally down and under, courtesy of the Tesla Model S Plaid. The Plaid comes with unbelievable specs and it was only a matter of time before it faced the Taycan Turbo S. The folks at DragTimes got these two quick and fast beasts on the drag strip for some quarter-mile runs only for the German to get see a set of taillights in every single race. Dominating fuel-powered supercars is one thing, but humiliating a really quick $200,000 EV? That’s just ludicrous (pun intended).

The Nevera makes more power than the Taycan and M5… combined!

Rimac unveiled the production form of C_Two concept last month. Christened with the name ‘Nevera’, this electric hypercar debuted with jaw-dropping specs. Stuff like 1,900 horses from a quad-motor setup, 0-60 mph in 1.85 seconds, etc. were the best for any production car. It came with a heavy price tag, too, costing around $2.5 million after currency conversion.

A car with these specs can’t be a match to any production car (Tesla Model S Plaid being the closest, but not better), but the folks at Carwow still decided to pit it against two German sprint runners – the Porsche Taycan Turbo S and the BMW M5 Competition. Do you think either of them can walk out of this race with any shred of dignity left?

Porsche Continues Its Ridiculous Record Streak With the Taycan

At this point, should we start calling the Taycan the "record-killer"?

Porsche has been in the habit of setting records recently, and it’s added another one to its name. Unbroken and unsurpassed since 2013, the Guinness World Record title for the fastest indoor land speed record has sat on the shelf of Tanner Foust, who clocked in a record speed of 86 mph back in 2013. That record has now gone by the wayside, thanks to Porsche and professional racer Leh Keen. Driving a Taycan Turbo S, Keen hit a top speed of 102.6 mph, eviscerating the previous record by more than 16 mph. As if owning the Guinness World Record for longest drift by an electric car — 210 laps — wasn’t enough, the record-breaking Taycan has another one in the bag.

One of the joys of seeing more and more electric cars, particularly those of the performance-spec persuasion, is seeing them compete against some of the fastest and most powerful gasoline-powered supercars in the world. We’ve seen our fair share of drag races involving electric cars and traditional exotics, and while one side of those battles have mostly been Teslas, YouTube channel Lovecars switched things up by racing a Lamborghini Aventador SV against a Porsche Taycan Turbo S. This is a juicy and intriguing race, in large part because both the naturally aspirated Lambo and the all-electric Porsche return the same acceleration tim to 62 mph at 2.8 seconds despite carrying two completely different powertrain setups. Who takes the cake here? Let’s find out.

We Drove 8 Electric Cars Over 1200 Miles in Real Conditions So You Don’t Have To

As it turns out, not all electric cars are created equal

Electric cars are not absolute newcomers to the car industry anymore. Over the past five years or so, most carmakers have churned out at least one electric car with plans to release a handful of others over the coming decade or so. The charging infrastructure has grown, too.

While this is obviously good news, it also leaves us (and the customer) with quite a big pond of EVs to choose from. To add more to the confusion and indecision, electric cars come in all shapes and sizes, set in motion by just one electric motor, two, or even three, and, obviously, very different price tags. Long story short, picking your next electric car might leave you scratching the top of your head. We get it.

Watch the Porsche Macan Turbo, Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, and the Audi RS Q3 Go Up Against Each Other In a Drag Race

A perfect example of technology outweighing the on-paper specs to determine the result

The folks at Carwow brought together three respectable SUVs – the Porsche Macan Turbo, Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, and the Audi RS Q3 Sportback – for a drag race.

On paper, the SUVs aren’t as closely matched as you expect them to be. If you go purely by specs and the power-to-weight ratio, you can determine the winner without even watching the race. But, we’ve seen in the past that things are generally different when you race vehicles in the real world. Do you think we’ll have a surprise winner at the end?

This Must-See Porsche Taycan Review Also Takes You on an Autobahn Cruise

This Must-See Porsche Taycan Review Also Takes You on an Autobahn Cruise

An in-depth review of a German machine on some fantastic German roads

The Porsche Taycan is an electric monster and sits right with the top guns when you talk about EVs. However, it has two major problems. The sky-high price and the laughable range.

Porsche recently said that it doesn’t consider Tesla as its rival. This sounded like a justification because it couldn’t match the latter’s battery range, but Porsche is right in some sense. But despite all this, there’s no denying that the Taycan is one heck of a performer. German YouTube channel Autogefühl managed to get its hands on the Taycan 4S and provided an in-depth review of the good, the bad, and the ugly. As a bonus, you even get to see it cruise on the Autobahn!

A Porsche 911 GT3 and a Taycan Roll Onto a Frozen Lake

A Porsche 911 GT3 and a Taycan Roll Onto a Frozen Lake

The Porsche Ice Force Pro Experience is more than proving grounds for would-be Porsche drivers. Unlike most “Experiences” that Porsche offers all over the world, Ice Force Pro is different, in part because it’s located 110 miles north of the Arctic Circle in a place called Levi, Finland. The 76-acre plot of frozen awesomeness lets you test your driving and drifting skills in the snow.

Even better, it lets you do it in a range of Porsche models, ranging from the 911 Carrera 4S, 911 GT3, and yes, the all-electric Taycan. Carfection recently took a trip to Ice Force Pro — just before the global quarantine shut almost everything down — to see what it’s like to drive and drift these Porsche models — specifically the Taycan — with studded tires, in an environment that’s as white as cotton.

If You Think the Porsche Taycan's Range Is Laughable Now, Just Wait Until the Cheaper Model Arrives

If You Think the Porsche Taycan’s Range Is Laughable Now, Just Wait Until the Cheaper Model Arrives

It will feature two-wheel drive and an even smaller battery pack

The Porsche Taycan has mainly been in the news for two reasons – the exorbitant price and the laughable range. In fact, Porsche recently said that it doesn’t consider Tesla as its rival. While this is true to an extent, it still sounded like a justification because it couldn’t match the latter’s battery range. Well, it looks like Porsche is going to get some heat for this as well. The company is coming up with a cheaper trim of the Taycan with a two-wheel-drive configuration and a ‘smaller battery’.

Can The 2020 Porsche Taycan Drift?

Can The 2020 Porsche Taycan Drift?

The answer is yes, and then some more

The Taycan is arguably one of the most exciting EVs money can buy for the simple reason that it offers near-supercar performance in a package that looks like a proper performance-oriented machine and not like just another sleek sedan.

That said, we’ve been wondering for quite some time whether the new Taycan can throw its rear end and drift around. Turns out we just got our answer and it’s a big yes.

Porsche Tries to Justify the Taycan’s Laughable Range By Saying It Doesn’t See Tesla As a Rival

The Germans also bet on smaller, lighter batteries

Porsche introduced its first all-electric car, the Taycan, in 2019, and it’s planning to expand the lineup with a crossover. Later on, it will also launch an electric SUV, as well as an EV version of the 718. Porsche’s recent and aggressive campaign into EV territory suggests that the German automaker is going after Tesla, especially since the Taycan is actually a high-performance model. However, Porsche says that it does not consider Tesla to be a direct competitor.

Meet Traycan, the Porsche Pickup Truck We Will Never Get

Meet Traycan, the Porsche Pickup Truck We Will Never Get

Truck + Taycan = Traycan. Do you get it now?

A truck is all that Porsche is missing from its current lineup. Even so, it’s extremely hard to imagine that even in its wildest corporate dreams the carmaker would think of coming to the market with a pickup truck, even in the context where a lot of brands are rushing to jump the e-truck market.

You’ve go Tesla, of course, with the Cybertruck, then there’s Rivian and its R1T, Bollinger B2, and the future all-electric Ford F-150, plus some other equally interesting contraptions. So, where would a

based pickup truck slot in, then?

Porsche’s 200-Page Annual and Sustainability Report Had a Little Surprise In It

Porsche is going to milk the Taycan, and the first model will be a Concept from 2018

Reports about the Porsche Macan EV have been bouncing back and forth for a year now, with the latest news being that it may only be sold as an EV from 2024 onward. This news came via an external report, but it is mentioned briefly in Porsche’s Annual and Sustainability Report for 2019 and that it is scheduled to launch in 2022. What was more interesting in that report, however, is reference to a jacked-up rugged wagon, once known as the Mission-E Cross Turismo Concept. Do you see where this is going? Are you getting excited yet?

The Porsche Taycan Has Limitless Launch Control

The Porsche Taycan Has Limitless Launch Control

Turns out the Taycan’s launch control feature was made to be abused... repeatedly

If you’re into modern Porsches, then you know they pack super-fancy launch control systems that are tougher than a tardigrade. Whether it’s the Panamera, the 911, or its GT3/GT2-badged iterations, launch controlling a Porsche can be done basically until you run out of fuel.

But as Chris Harris was about to discover, the same applies to the Porsche Taycan. That’s nothing short of impressive and at the same time reaffirming of the Taycan’s status as a true out-and-out all-electric sports car.

The Porsche Taycan Turbo S Might Have Horrible Range But Hot Damn is it Fast

Independent testing shows the Taycan Turbo S can run 10-second quarter miles!

Remember when we told you that the Porsche Taycan Turbo S got a dismal EPA rating of just 194 miles of range on a single charge? Well, as it turns out, that’s the cost of being fast. Incredibly fast. Well, that and a sticker price of $186,350, but that’s a story for another time. In fact, that price almost seems justified.

Porsche Returns to the Land of Super Bowl Commercials with an Electrifying Commercial

Porsche Returns to the Land of Super Bowl Commercials with an Electrifying Commercial

Wait, is that the ___ hiding in plain sight?

Porsche is showing its first Super Bowl commercial in 23 years, and the star of the ad is none other than the all-electric Taycan. The German automaker’s first-ever all-electric production car is all set to hit the market this year, but there’s nothing quite like the platform and reach of the Super Bowl to get the hype going.

The 60-second commercial is called “The Heist” and unlike some previous ones that have touted electric technology more than the actual electric cars, this commercial is all about the Taycan… and several other Porsche vehicles. The 60-second ad will air in the first quarter of the game, but if you want to watch the extended cut, you can check out the video and watch it in its entirety.

The Porsche Taycan Turbo S Is Rated at 194 Miles? It Doesn't Stand a Chance

The Porsche Taycan Turbo S Is Rated at 194 Miles? It Doesn’t Stand a Chance

It looks like Tesla had the Porsche Taycan beat before it was even conceived

You know, I like the Porsche Taycan. I think it’s relatively sport for what it is while still featuring the family friendliness of four-doors and plenty of cargo room. Sure, it kind of looks like a deformed, partially aborted 911 with too much DNA, but that’s a conversation for another day. What I can’t get past, though, is the fact that Porsche has seriously dropped the ball when it comes to EV range. Where the Porsche Taycan Turbo is rated at 201 miles, the Taycan Turbo S garners just 194 on a full charge.
