McLaren’s replacement for the 650S brings more power, better performance, and new tech

After three years on the market, the first-generation McLaren Super Series was replaced by a redesigned model at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. Dubbed 720S, the core member of the second-generation Super Series has been thoroughly redesigned inside and out and gained a revised, larger V-8 engine.

Introduced in 2014 as a replacement for the 12C, the company’s first mass-produced sports car, the McLaren Super Series has had a successful three of years on the market as of 2017. It spawned several road-going and race-spec versions, including the 650S, 675LT, and 650S GT3, forming the brand’s most comprehensive family of vehicles yet. But, despite its success and tremendous performance, McLaren decided to give the Super Series a makeover and launch the brand-new 720S in 2017.

Codenamed P14, the successor to the 650S is the first new model in McLaren’s new business plan, which includes a £1-billion investment for 15 new products by 2022. Built around a new carbon-fiber tub called the Monocage II, the second-gen Super Series ditched the company’s ubiquitous 3.8-liter V-8 for a new, 4.0-liter unit. Design-wise, The 720S is a significant departure from the 650S and incorporates radical active aerodynamics, as well as loads of new technology in the cockpit. As you’d expect from a new-generation supercar, the 720S is lighter, faster, and even more dynamically capable than its predecessor. Let’s find out more about that in the review below.

Drag Race: Tuned McLaren 720S vs Ferrari SF90 Stradale - Who Gets To Sit On The Throne?

Watch a tuned McLaren 720S try to rip the Ferrari SF90 Stradale to shreds in this drag race for the ages

Brooks from ‘DragTimes’ took his Ferrari SF90 Stradale to the drag strip for a fight against a McLaren 720S. The 720S isn’t stock. It features upgraded intake, downpipes, and is tuned to make close to 900 horses at the wheel. This puts the power outputs very close to the SF90 Stradale’s. Do you think the British can one-up the Italian hybrid beast here, or will the latter prevail?

The McLaren 720S may be the best Supercar on sale today. Here’s why

McLaren’s lineup seems to be as diverse as ever, with 16 road-going versions currently on sale including the Spider versions. However, Hagerty has commissioned TheSmokingTire co-host, Zack Klapman, to explain why the McLaren 720 Spider is possibly the best supercar currently on sale. And what better way to lay down his argument than to take the mid-engine supercar for a drive on a great road with plenty of corners?

Can the Audi R8 and the McLaren 720S dethrone the mighty Godzilla?

High-horsepower drag races are always a thrill to watch. Even more so to participate in, but instead, I am sitting here writing about it. In any case, it’s always interesting to see which drivetrain layout is best at a certain power level, and once again, Carwow happily obliges. In this case, we have three cars with over 1,000 horsepower that differ in the way they deliver power to the ground – a Nissan GT-R, Audi R8, and a McLaren 720S.

The McLaren 720S is an extreme machine, and was one of the first ever supercars to approach the acceleration level of modern day hypercars. Where McLaren stopped with the 720S, aftermarket tuners picked up, giving the world models like the McLaren 720S by Novitec, McLaren 720S Zenith Black by MSO, and even the 720S Spyder by MSO. Each of these programs built upon and already amazing package, but none of them come close to making the 720S look as extreme as the McLaren Senna, and that’s where DarwinPro’s new aerodynamic body kit comes into play.

Is AWD more important than power at the drag strip?

Quarter-mile times were a big thing back in the 1960s when the big American companies were operating by the motto "win on Sunday, sell on Monday." It’s no longer used as a business model nowadays, but quarter-mile times are still a cool way to measure performance. In today’s comparison, we take a look at an exciting drag race between the Porsche 911 Turbo S and the McLaren 720S thanks to Carwow.

The McLaren 720 GTX3 is a GT3 racecar, unhinged

Race cars are undeniably quick, but they still have to abide by certain regulations depending on the type of racing series they are meant for. This usually means a certain power to weight ratio or a maximum amount of width, downforce, etc. If only one of these parameters is outside the allowed boundaries, the car will not be eligible to race in the intended series. With this in mind, McLaren has decided to show us what a fully-unhinged racecar is all about by making the 720S GT3X. Here’s what you need to know.

Both carry twin-turbocharged V-8 engines that produce 710 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque. Both have seven-speed dual-clutch transmissions. Both are rear-wheel drive. With all these numbers and features nearly identical, the question begs: which of the two is faster in a drag race?

That type of race should be able to create some differentiation between the two, right? YouTuber 888MF sought to find an answer, and like very few people in the world, he was able to bring a 720S and an F8 Tributo to an empty stretch of road for an old-fashion drag race. Every now and then, however, something truly amazing comes to digital life, and that’s the case with the rendering we’re about to discuss here. In short, someone took styling cues from a handful of cars that are iconic in their own right and created an all new car that has never existed and never will exist. This Ceramic Pro Ad Featuing a McLaren 720S Off-Roading is Better Than the Last 3 Fast and Furious Movies Combined

Don’t worry, no McLarens were harmed in the filming of this video

The video itself is about as clickbaity as it can get. If the title “OFF ROADING MY MCLAREN 720S... i regret destroying my car” doesn’t clue you in, perhaps the thumbnail hinting at a destroyed engine will. To be honest, the title definitely got us, and we sure did watch it. After all, who doesn’t want to see some overly wealthy ass off-road a car with 4.2-inches of ground clearance? It’s not something most of us would do, and that’s the beauty of it. However, as it turned out, this video is intended to be an advertisement for Ceramic Pro, an exterior coating that protects automotive paint.

The video was uploaded by Alex Choi, and we’re not sure if it’s actually an official ad or not. If it’s not, then I have a feeling someone just muscled themselves into an advertising job. Back to the point at hand, the near-7-minute video is downright awesome, featuring a number of stunts, amazing camera angles, and some pretty hardcore dirt-track racing with the aforementioned McLaren 720S.

As much as I like the Fast and Furious franchise, I have to admit that this long advertisement is certainly better than that last trailer for Fast and Furious 9, and to be honest, the action scenes might be better than the last three movies combined. That said, go ahead and check out what could end up being the coolest automotive advertisement of 2020 below.

Well, it looks like the German tuner isn’t showing signs of cutting down on that practice, because its latest concoction is a wide-body Macca 720S Spider that wears the said N-Largo attire. And it looks a lot like the convertible Senna we’re never going to get, which ultimately shouldn’t raise many eyebrows as the Senna is largely based on the 720S in the first place. 2019 Graffiti-Drawn McLaren 720S by Alec Monopoly

I never knew the McLaren 720S could look more unique than it already is

The McLaren 720S is in attendance at the Art Basel show in Miami, Florida. Whereas the presence of a supercar of the stature of the 720S would usually draw a crowd in it of itself, this particular 720S stands out for one specific reason: it’s wearing the artwork of renowned New York-based graffiti artist Alec Monopoly.

The 33-year old artist took the task of turning the 720S into a full-blown art car — art cars are an Art Basel Miami tradition — that speaks to his famous style of street art. The McLaren 720S isn’t just wearing Monopoly’s street art; it’s also been fitted with aftermarket components courtesy of 1016 Industries, including what might as well be the fanciest set of wheels we’ve seen in a long time.

Can a McLaren 720S Really Beat a Porsche 918 Spyder Down the Quarter-Mile?

The McLaren 720S is already one of the fastest accelerating production cars and can be made quicker through some simple tweaks

Since McLaren got in the game of making road-going supercars, the British company known for its motorsport success has produced some pretty astonishing pieces of kit including the mind-boggling P1, the track-destroying Senna, and the 720S. The latter’s been the subject of a number of stories here on TopSpeed.com focusing on its prowess on the drag strip which isn’t surprising given its 710 horsepower output and the cohort of computers helping it get off the line as fast as an EV. However, can it really beat Porsche’s 918 Hybrid halo hypercar?

We know, given the pace at which the automotive world is moving nowadays, a car released back in 2017 can no longer be considered as ’fresh’ but the McLaren 720S that was first shown to the public at the Geneva Auto Show a couple of years ago is still pretty much what dreams are made of, not only because it looks incredibly well but also because it’s an incredibly competent machine. Potent enough to take on the 875 horsepower and 944 pound-feet of torque of one of the members of the Holy Trinity. Is, then, no need in this world for the P1?

2019 McLaren 720S APEX Collection

British automaker pays tribute to its rich history in motor racing

McLaren’s legacy as one of the most accomplished motor racing outfits in history is secure. Long before it became a purveyor of fine production exotics, McLaren was building a racing legacy that’s matched only by a few of its rivals. It’s fitting, then, that in celebrating that legacy, the U.K.-based automaker is launching a special edition series of 720S models called the MSO Apex Collection.

Only 15 units of the McLaren 720S MSO Apex Collection will be built. Each unit will pay homage to one of five different race tracks in Europe that’s near and dear to the success McLaren has enjoyed in the motor racing scene. The super-exclusive McLaren 720S MSO Apex Collection will be offered at a starting price of £288,813. That converts to around $356,200 based on current exchange rates. Deliveries are expected to begin this month. Unfortunately for us here in the U.S., the new special edition 720S will only be available in the European market.

McLaren Prefers Exclusivity Over Volume and Profit, Won't Follow the Trend of Its Competitors

McLaren Prefers Exclusivity Over Volume and Profit, Won’t Follow the Trend of Its Competitors

Only time will tell if McLaren is as steadfast in the future as it is today

Crossovers and SUVs have been hot button issues across boardrooms of exotic automakers all over the world. Some brands like Lamborghini, Ferrari, Bentley, and Rolls-Royce have given in to the craze. Bugatti has adopted a fence-hopping approach, straddling both sides with the ease of a gymnast. Then there are companies like Koenigsegg that have sworn off taking that plunge. The latter is a shrinking list, but Koenigsegg can take comfort knowing that it’s got company from McLaren.

Yes, the British supercar brand has no plans of developing and building an SUV because it doesn’t pass the cool factor for the brand. Granted, we’ve seen this song and dance number from automakers that have previously said they wouldn’t build SUVs only to do it anyway. McLaren sounds different, though, and while time will ultimately determine whether the brand’s position remains, it does look like McLaren’s portfolio will remain SUV-free in the near future.

McLaren 720S vs. Ford GT - Who Wins the Half-Mile Drag Race?

McLaren 720S vs. Ford GT - Who Wins the Half-Mile Drag Race?

This is a shootout you don’t want to miss

The new Ford GT is an amazing machine. It might be a little overpriced compared to other models in the same niche (and especially now that Chevy has a mid-engined coupe that starts well below the $100,000 mark), but it’s a true successor to the original GT, even with that EcoBoost V-6 hidden behind the seats. But, how does it compare against something a little more exotic, more powerful, and significantly cheaper? How does it compete against something like, say, the McLaren 720S?

Well, Youtube channel DragTimes set out to determine exactly that as it put these two low-riding supercars to the test in a half-mile shootout. The results are pretty much what you would expect but, there might be a little twist in there as well (we’ll let you watch the video to find out for yourself.) Before you click play, though, let me remind you what we’re working with here.

The Ford GT has a 3.5-liter V-6 that’s good for 647 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque while the McLaren 720S has a 4.0-liter V-8 with 710 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque. The difference in power-to-weight ratio isn’t much, though as the 720S is a bit heavier (3,053 pounds vs. 3,167 pounds). The GT pumps out 0.212 horsepower per pound while the 720S pumps out 0.224 horsepower per pound. That’s a difference of 0.2 seconds to 60 mph in favor of the 720S, which is also nearly a second quicker to the end of a quarter-mile strip. How do they stack up in a half-mile sprint, though? Well, check out the video below to find out for yourself.

A fitting aftermarket upgrade for a British supercar from an Italian tuner

The McLaren 720S Spider is a certified supercar. It has the design proportions of a McLaren and it features a potent V-8 engine that can lay the smackdown on any car that gets in its way. It’s hard to imagine a car that already has 710 horsepower on tap to gain more power to smoke them fools, but that’s why the aftermarket world exists in the first place. It’s a place where a tuner like Novitec can take a McLaren 720 S and tinker with it to the extent that it now comes with enough power to put most of its rivals in their proper places. This is the world of automotive tuning inhabited by Novitec. Just when you thought that it can’t get any better for your McLaren 720S, the German tuner finds a way to make it happen.

Video of the Day: 2020 McLaren 750 LT Testing On the Nurburgring

Video of the Day: 2020 McLaren 750 LT Testing On the Nurburgring

Yup – there’s another long tail on the way!

You didn’t think that McLaren was done making long tails, did you? Well, in case you did, we’re here to tell you that you thought wrong. The McLaren 720S is set to be the next model to be given the long tail treatment, and it should go by the 750S name. The name alone reveals that it should have some 750 PS (around 740 horsepower) which means it’ll deliver around 30 horsepower more than the 710-horsepower 720S. The particular model in this video is clearly a 720S that’s been converted for testing purposes, so it lacks some of the typical long tail aero, but there’s no denying that this is a mule for the 750 LT.

This becomes painfully obvious thanks to the more dominating splitter and sharp canards on the front fascia for increased downforce in the front. The rear is pretty void of any changes, but there is a roll cage inside. That roll cage won’t make it to the production model and is only there to protect the testing engineers in case something should go wrong as this baby tears ass around the Nurburgring as seen in this video. Expect the new 750 LT to be lighter, faster, and more track worthy than the 720 or the now-discontinued 675 LT.

And, since we know you’re curious about when we’ll see the official production model, word has it that we’ll see it at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show and it will be part of the automakers new Super Series lineup. But, we know you’re anxious to see the new 750 LT in action, so check that out in the video below!

It wears a three-digit price tag but the amount of joy it can bring is priceless

Whoever said McLaren is in the business of making toys that are solely destined for big boys is mistaken. The best proof we can think of is this freshly released ride-on set that comes to both celebrate and replicate the might Macca 720S. Obviously, this is not McLaren’s first peg at ride-ons, not since the car manufacturer offered an all-electric one based on the P1 hypercar back in 2016.

Adding even more speed to an already fast car? Sign us up

The McLaren 720S was never intended as a dragster, but that doesn’t mean this supercar masterpiece is anything less than amazing on the 1320. In stock form, it’ll dip into the 9’s - or you could just throw a few basic mods at it and shave that ET down to an 8! And that’s exactly what the owner of this particular 720S did, posting a time of 8.993 at 159.55 mph.

2019 McLaren 720S Spider

The cool and fast 720S goes topless

Introduced in December 2018, right between the auto shows in Los Angeles and Detroit, the 720S Spider replaces the 650S Spider in the lineup and enables McLaren to compete with the 488 Spider and Huracan Spyder. It’s the third member of the family, joining the coupe and the race-spec 720S GT3. The 720S Spider shares all exterior and interior features, as well as the drivetrain centered around the 4.0-liter V-8 engine, with the coupe model. Although it’s 108 pounds heavier than the coupe, the 720S Spider remains the lightest in its class with a dry weight of 2,937 pounds.

2019 McLaren 720S Spider by MSO

If MSO’s most recent projects have taught us anything, it’s that there are many more MSO-prepared 720S Spiders around the corner

The McLaren 720S Spider is the roofless version of one of the most revered models in McLaren’s Super Series. McLaren’s Special Operations division (MSO) brought a one-off 720S Spider to the Geneva Motor Show to show off the kind of modifications possible with a run-of-the-mill 720S Spider. The result is a tri-color beast with tons of exposed carbon fiber.

Are we getting to the point when personalization has gone too far? Henry Ford used to say that you could have any color on your Ford Model T as long as the color was black. Now, every luxury manufacturer brags about its "nearly infinite" choices, and depending on how deep are your pockets, each is willing to open before you a whole world of options. The MSO division offers multiple worlds, one for each of McLaren’s models, and the 720S Spider has just joined this exclusive group at the Geneva Motor Show.

2019 McLaren 720S Spa 68 Special Edition

One of Three Celebrating The First McLaren F1 Win 50 Years Ago

Honoring the first F1 win during the 1968 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, exactly 50 years ago, McLaren’s special division, MSO, revealed a Special Edition McLaren 720 S Spa 68. Commissioned by McLaren Brussels, the latest special edition 720S joins numerous other SE models. I am quite sure that McLaren makes a whole lot of money on its SE cars. I can’t even imagine how expensive some of them will be in 20 or 30 years time. Nevertheless, crafting yet another Special Edition McLaren 720S, MSO division tried to tie the new 720S with the old orange McLaren M7A racer Bruce McLaren drove back then to claim the first F1 win for the McLaren.

The car you can see in the photos is a part of the 720 S Spa 68 Collection. Three cars will be built - all for McLaren Brussels.

The McLaren 720S Spider's Secret Weapon is Its Roof

The McLaren 720S Spider’s Secret Weapon is Its Roof

The new Super Series machine is laughing in the face of the Ferrari 488 Spider

McLaren has had a busy year with the respective launches of the track-focused Senna and the three-seater Speedtail. But 2018 isn’t done yet, so McLaren’s busting out another debut, this time for the “more affordable” 720S Spider. Despite its place in the “Senna-Speedtail” pecking order, the McLaren 720S Spider is lethal and potent in its own right. It has the same 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged, V-8 engine as its coupe counterpart and produces 710 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque. More importantly, the 720S Spider isn’t as heavy as you’d think, especially with the complex roof system it’s carrying. McLaren is already taking orders for the 720S Spider, which carries a price of $315,000. Those who order from the British automaker should expect their supercars to arrive sometime in March 2019.

LEGO’s 2019 Speed Champions Lineup is Loaded With Pony Cars and Exotics

Too bad it’s arriving a month after Christmas

It’s probably not the best time to promote it, but LEGO is doing it, anyway. The line for the 2019 Lego Speed Champions set has been unveiled, and there’s a lot to get excited about if you’re a fan of brick cars and their real-life counterparts. The lineup includes one of the fiercest supercars in the market today, a handful of muscle cars that can throw down against any car on the road, and what is arguably the most iconic Ferrari of all time outside the 250 GTO. The 2019 Lego Speed Champions sets will be available to order in January, or a month after Christmas. Those who are looking to buy one for the holidays will have to hold out for a month, but if patience is a virtue, the wait should be worth it.

Watch the McLaren 720S Decimate a 60-MPH Run in 2.3 Seconds

McLaren’s 720S is not an EV, but it accelerates as fast as one

The McLaren 720S is a beast; there’s no denying that. The 710-horsepower replacement of the 650S is known for savagely destroying almost anything on the track, but it’s also a force to be reckoned with on the drag strip. Here, this stock, except for the Toyo tires, effortlessly reaches 60 mph in just 2.39 seconds en-route to a blistering quarter-mile time.

Launched in 2017 at the Geneva Auto Show, the 720S is McLaren’s mid-range supercar. It features the M840T 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 that’s over 40% new in comparison to the 3.8-liter unit of the 650S. The car arrives from the factory in Woking equipped with Pirelli P-Zero Corsa rubber that wraps neatly around the 19-inch and 20-inch rims but isn’t ideal for use on the dragstrip. The guys at DragTimes changed the tires and, without other modifications, achieved some ludicrous times.

McLaren just confirmed that it will launch a new supercar on December 8, less than two months since it introduced the amazing Speedtail. To be more specific, we’re talking about the McLaren 720S Spider.

2019 McLaren Special Operations 720S Stealth Theme

2019 McLaren Special Operations 720S Stealth Theme

McLaren has always known how to pay tribute to its legends

The McLaren 720S Stealth Theme is a shadowy tribute to the only McLaren that has ever conquered the Le Mans 24 Hours race, the F1 GTR. It is built by McLaren Special Operations on request from the McLaren dealer in London and, underneath the skin, it hides all the goodies of a 720S Performance.

Launched only last year, the 720S came as the replacement of the popular 650S model. It features heavily revised aerodynamics, a luscious body sculpted with speed in mind, and a brand-new, twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine that is 41-percent new compared to the old 3.8-liter unit.

The 720S Stealth Theme commemorates McLaren’s overall victory at Le Mans 23 years ago when a GT1-spec F1 GTR blitzed the whole of the prototype field to win the race, a genuine first for a production-based car as Porsche’s previous victory with a GT car, in 1979, was achieved with a silhouette-style 935 that only shared the roof and the windows with the street-legal 911.

Watch This Lightly Tuned McLaren 720S Run the Quarter Mile in Less Than 10 Seconds

Watch This Lightly Tuned McLaren 720S Run the Quarter Mile in Less Than 10 Seconds

It’s only got a retune, but that’s enough to put it deep in the 9’s

The McLaren 720S is an absolute beast right out of the box, with nearly $300K worth of go-fast awesomeness on offer for anyone with the bank to back it. That said, for a little extra outlay, you can extract even more from it, granted you know where to turn for a tune.

This particular example comes from EKanoo Racing, a tuner based out of the Middle East that specializes in building seriously quick drag racing machinery. This McLaren is no different, however, the mods are very light, with just an ECU retune to pull a bit more power from the mid-mounted, twin-turbo, 4.0-liter V-8.

EKanoo Racing declined to say exactly how much more power this tuned 720S is making, but unleashed down the 1320, it manages a very fast 9.605 at 146 mph. Compare that to the stocker’s time of 10 seconds flat at 140 mph, and it’s obvious this thing is laying down some extra mid-range muscle.

As a reminder, the stock McLaren 720S produces 710 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque, all of which is routed to the rear wheels by way of seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The sprint to 60 mph takes less than 3 seconds, while top speed is rated at 212 mph.

The run itself takes place in Bahrain at the Bahrain International Circuit, the same track used for the annual Bahrain Grand Prix Formula 1 race. The whole clip is just 30 seconds long, but seeing this thing move at full chat is a delight all the same. Make sure to listen for the high-pitched whine as the 720S accelerates, which apparently are the super-sticky tires making maximum thrust against the tacky track surface.

An Effortless Triumph to 200+ MPH in a McLaren 720S

An Effortless Triumph to 200+ MPH in a McLaren 720S

This is what happens when a McLaren 720S is unleashed

There aren’t a lot of roads in this world that’s as better to drive on than the German autobahn. We get to see why that is in this video featuring a McLaren 720S stretching its legs without having to worry about breaking any speed limits. The video doesn’t last long — it’s actually just a little over minute long — but it does paint a revealing picture of what the 720S is capable of.

Remember, this is a car that features a new 4.0-liter, twin-turbo, V-8 that pumps out 710 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque. Those numbers aren’t child’s play, folks. With that much power on tap, the 720S can blitz its way to 60 mph in just 2.7 seconds as it blasts off on a top speed run that maxes out at 212 mph. The video clearly shows what that looks like when the 720S is given the freedom to really reach for its potential. The piercing sound of the V-8 is only interrupted by the sight of all the surrounding turning into a blur.

You’re not going to get this kind of experience on other roads, but that’s what makes the German autobahn so special. Remember the saying that lions can only thrive in the jungle? Well, the same applies here. The McLaren 720S is the lion, and the German autobahn is its jungle.

Someone Brutally Destroyed a McLaren 720S and Left it for Dead

Someone Brutally Destroyed a McLaren 720S and Left it for Dead

Fellow Supercars Showed up for a makeshift funeral

It seems like once a week there’s some idiot in a supercar trying to be a hero. Usually, it results in destroying said supercar along with plenty of other property too. Such things can easily rack up $1 million or more in damages. On the plus side, we usually get to see a video of said idiot trying to be a hero. That isn’t the case today, but we do get to see the aftermath and all we can say is “WOW.” Apparently, someone needs to McLaren one hell of a thank you letters as the Monocage II structure definitely saved their lives.

What actually happened seems to be a bit of a mystery, but the drive was obviously hauling ass and, apparently, narrowly missed ending up in a deep ravine. One side of the car is at least recognizable while the flipping of the car literally sheered the passenger side door and one of the wheels right from the car. Believe it or not, the passengers walked away, although they probably had some pretty thick brown stains in their undergarments.

One other thing to point out is what the hell is going on with the rest of the supercars on the scene? Do they all have a radar for this kind of thing? It’s like all of the other supercar drivers in the area just had to show up and look at what their future might be if they don’t keep all four on the pavement. It’s like a makeshift funeral for a 720S that’s had a better day. In fact, there’s more supercars and supercar owners than police on the scene. Just what the hell is going in in Las Vegas?

For what it’s worth, the passengers of the car turned up at a local hospital with minor injuries that includes scrapes, cuts, and bruises. But, the point is, there was no serious injury. That just speaks volume towards how well the 720S is built. And, while it’s sad to see another McLaren come to an early death, it’s pretty cool to see just how well they are really built. For those of you who happen to own a supercar, this is why you drive them at full girth on the track. Don’t do it on the road, even in the middle of the desert. And, if you do, please make sure someone is recording so we can see it happen and not just the aftermath.

One-Off McLaren 720S By MSO Raises $650,000 For Children’s Charity

Going big for a good cause

While just about any McLaren model in standard trim is truly a sight to behold, the experts over at McLaren Special Operations (MSO) have a way of making these machines even more attractive. And that’s exactly what happened with this one-of-one 720S coupe, which comes draped in unique paint and gets decked out in a plethora of carbon bits. One McLaren fan was so smitten, they paid $650,000 to get their hands on it, well over twice the car’s starting MSRP. And that’s a good thing, because proceeds went to benefit a children’s charity.

The car was recently auctioned off at the Naples Winter Wine Festival, where it raised money for the Naples Children & Education Foundation. The car was originally equipped in the Luxury specification (as opposed to the base model or Performance spec). From there, MSO added a host of optional equipment, including loads of carbon fiber bits for the interior and exterior. However, the most eye-catching feature is the Nerello Red paint found on the body panels, so named after a type of grape found in the Mascali area of Sicily – appropriate for the Naples Winter Wine Festival, no?

Inside, the 720S comes equipped with Saddle Brown leather upholstery punctuated by Nerello stitching. There’s also a customized steering wheel sporting some Carbon Black leather hand grips.

As a reminder, the McLaren 720S comes from the factory with a carbon fiber chassis for low weight, as well as a 4.0-liter V-8 for motivation. The powerplant is pumped up by a double-dose of turbocharging to produce 710 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque at the rear wheels. The run to 60 mph takes just 2.8 seconds, while top speed is rated at 212 mph. MSRP starts at $287,745.

In case you’ve been living under a rock (or maybe you’re just in denial?), demand for crossovers and SUVs continues to consume just about every automotive segment imaginable.
