It’s going to take more than a name change and a lower roof for anything above the Passat to be successful
Back in 2007, Volkswagen thought it would be a good idea to develop a large coupe with a heavily sloped roof. Some of you from way back then know it as the Passat CC, while more recently it has dropped the “Passat” name. Volkswagen had big ambitions for the CC, calling it a “sports sedan” and projecting sales of at least 300,000 over the first seven years of production. But, the CC is often overlooked and has performed very poorly. Fast forward to 2017 and VW has decided to usher in a successor to the last-gen CC and it comes complete with a name change. Now going by the name Arteon, the car now rides on VW’s MQB platform and will be offered with a number of standard features that includes LED lights outside, a progressive steering system, 18-inch wheels, and a handful of engines that offer a power output that ranges from 148 horsepower all the way up to 276 horsepower. You can have AWD with some drivetrain options, or only front-wheel drive in others.
Tobias Suhlmann, the man responsible for the Arteon’s design, said, “The athletic lines of the Arteon embody a highly functional overall concept. Form and function find common ground here in a progressive way. Thanks to its long wheelbase, stretched roofline, coupe-style fastback design and large rear hatch, this Gran Turismo provides more space and flexibility than conventional sedans."
But, while it does have a long wheelbase and it follows suit with a number of other sedans that have that low, sloping roof, the new Arteon isn’t all that different from the CC it replaces. So, let’s take a closer look at it and see if we can make out anything that might make this model more successful than the CC.

Now, Volkswagen is growing its enthusiast fleet again with the Arteon Big Sur concept.
America Never Gets The Cool Cars – The Volkswagen Arteon R is the Latest Forbidden Fruit
It has barely been a month since Volkswagen revealed the refreshed Arteon and Arteon shooting brake. As a model that just landed in the States two years ago, I wouldn’t be surprised if you haven’t paid it much attention, and that means you probably didn’t know that there’s also an Arteon R – a mid-level performance car with more than 300 horsepower. Sounds great, right? Well, if you live in the United States, that’s too bad, because it’s our latest forbidden fruit.
This Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Brake Is The Definition of Gorgeous
The U.S. market is bereft of wagons. In the last few years, most automakers pulled their wagons due to the falling demand. There aren’t a lot of options right now and even though there seems to be a positive response to wagons lately, automakers are still hesitant about getting them back. The latest example of this is the Volkswagen Arteon. The company recently refreshed the model and introduced a Shooting Brake version, but it won’t be reaching the U.S. shores.
To give you an idea of how of what we’re missing, here is a couple of renderings from X-Tomi Design that show how hot a two-door Arteon Shooting Brake would look.

At a time when the whole world is moving from sedans to crossovers and SUVs – much to the dismay of the car lovers – the Volkswagen Arteon comes as a knight in shining armor. The Arteon was launched as a successor of the Volkswagen Passat CC just three years back, and now VW has given it a mid-cycle refresh with a few tweaks on the outside and many changes on the inside. The German automaker is unearthing the R-Line variant, adding a plug-in trim, and also introducing a shooting brake body style.
A Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Brake? Europe Has All the Awesome Cars
Volkswagen is looking to freshen up the Arteon - which it calls a Gran Turismo now - and with it, we’ll be getting the so-called Arteon Shooting Brake.
What’s more, in the carmaker’s own words, the incoming Arteon update is "major", so let’s see what that could mean, because there’s not much given away in the press blurb.

The Volkswagen Arteon came to our attention back in 2017, during its unveil at the Geneva Motor Show. Three years into the fastback-shaped sedan’s career, Volkswagen is planning to give the Arteon a well-deserved nip and tuck which would keep customer interest fresh and address the areas that needed further improvements.
With the refreshed Arteon, however, we’re expecting Volkswagen to introduce a spicier, more performance oriented version under its notorious R badge. Our suspicions are backed up by a recent set of spy shots that show a virtually undisguised test mule that wears a lot of R-specific features. Allow us to detail, then.

Five Reasons New Arteon May Vivify Volkswagen In The U.S.
I remember when one of the American automotive publications revealed the first pictures of the latest Passat destined for the European market. Some of the first comments under the post were along the lines of “Why don’t we get something like this?; We have garbage, this is the Passat we need! Why is Volkswagen doing this to us?”
Well, Volkswagen listened closely, and while they couldn’t bring the European Passat to the U.S., it did something even better. It brought the new Arteon which is, by all counts, a better looking, coupe-like saloon. Revealed at the Chicago Auto Show in its U.S. guise, the Arteon seems like the ultimate expression of what Volkswagen stands for right now. It is, aside from the new Touareg (awesome SUV, I must add), the flagship of Volkswagen combining technology one may usually find on upper-scale Audi vehicles.
Yet, it will not be cheap. At all. Volkswagen has yet to disclose pricing, but some suggest it will start at $35,000-$40,000, just like the CC. Yet, the one you would really like will probably set you back closer to $50,000.
Regardless of this, I can list at least five reasons why the new Arteon may vivify Volkswagen in the U.S.
2018 Volkswagen Arteon R-Line Highlight Concept
Unveiled in 2017 as a replacement for the ill-fated CC, the Arteon keeps Volkswagen active in the rather tiny four-door coupe segment. Sportier than its predecessor and boasting more premium features than ever, the Arteon could finally establish the German firm as a powerful player on the premium market. Now also available in R-Line trim, the Arteon just gained a special paint finish and a set of wheels from Vossen to become the Highlight Concept.
Based on the R-Line model, the Highlight Concept explores the Arteon’s "potential to make a statement on the show field." Granted, the sleek and wide stance give the sedan a unique place among Volkswagen cars, and we will probably see a wide range of aftermarket upgrades at the upcoming tuning shows. Volkswagen’s is far from radical, but it shows what you can do with special paint, a set of custom wheels, and a lowered suspension.

Volkswagen Showcases Four New Concepts at SOWO in Georgia
Volkswagen has a bit of a reputation for providing some pretty boring concepts, but the four new concepts it brought to SOWO this hear are cool as hell. Volkswagen says they represent the tastes of Volkswagen enthusiasts, which isn’t exactly a good explanation of why there’s so much bright yellow. What we have here is a modified Golf R, Jetta R-Line, Tiguan R-Line, and an Arteon R-Line, all with their own special way of standing out that is quite intriguing and refreshing at the same time.
Report: VW will Launch the T-Roc R, Tiguan R, and Arteon R Sometime This Year
As of the time of this writing, the Volkswagen Golf R is the only car offered by VW with an R badge. All of that is apparently about to change, as reports indicate that VW will be giving the R treatment to a big portion of its lineup, beginning with the T-Roc R, Tiguan R, and Arteon R. Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard this rumor, but there’s more to it.
After years of speculation, the Volkswagen CC gained a successor after almost ten years on the market. But while the four-door coupe configuration carried on, Volkswagen decided to retire the CC nameplate. Fearing that the CC might not rebound from its slow-selling final years, the Germans gave the four-door coupe a massive makeover and renamed it the Arteon. Significantly more appealing thanks to its sporty design, premium interior, and more powerful drivetrain, the Arteon could finally establish VW as a powerful player on the premium market. With the Arteon set to go on sale by the end of 2018, Volkswagen expanded the lineup with an R-Line model.
Slightly sportier on the outside and fitted with a few extra features on the inside, the R-Line become the range-topping model of the Arteon family. That’s pretty much available for every VW model out there that doesn’t have a GTi or R version, so the move is far from surprising. Unfortunately, the "R-Line" badge comes with no drivetrain upgrades whatsoever, so you’ll have to wait a while longer for that performance-oriented sedan with a V-6 engine. Until that happens, let’s take a closer look at the Arteon R-Line, which breaks cover at the 2018 New York Auto Show.

Unveiled at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, the Volkswagen Arteon arrived to replace the CC, a sportier-looking, coupe-style version of the all-popular Passat. A big hit when it was introduced in 2008, the CC lost its appeal after only a few years, and it became one of the company’s slowest selling vehicles. A significant departure from its predecessor, the Arteon will fix that and likely give Volkswagen a better shot at the premium market. Launched in the U.S. at the 2018 Chicago Auto Show, the Arteon is not only the more appealing car on the outside, but it’s also more practical.

Volkswagen’s choice for the Arteon’s American debut is rather weird given that the U.S. had three major events in New York, Los Angeles, and Detroit since then, but it’s better late than never I guess.
Coming Soon: VR6-Powered Volkswagen Arteon R
The Volkswagen Arteon sits on top of VW’s range, but for whatever reason, the flagship sedan tops out with a 2.0-liter TSI variant that pumps out 276 horsepower. That’s actually a decent number, but not for a car that’s supposed to have the status of the Arteon. Fortunately, good news is on the horizon, though, because Volkswagen is actually preparing a more potent VR6 version that could have as much as 400 horsepower at its disposal.

Volkswagen Arteon Is Proof that Volkswagen Learned Something From the CC Fiasco
While it was a cool looking car, the Volkswagen CC wasn’t exactly successful, despite surviving nearly ten years on the market. For starters, it wasn’t as sporty is it looked, but Volkswagen also received complaints about the expensive sticker and the limited headroom. Discontinued for 2017, the CC will be replaced by the Arteon, and it seems that Volkswagen learned a few valuable lessons from the CC’s rather unfortunate stint on the market.
Unveiled at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, the Arteon is a gorgeous design exercise. Based on concepts from the past, the CC replacement is no longer just a slightly restyled Passat with a sleeker roof line. The Arteon received its own design language defined by a massive grille and aggressive air intakes up front, muscular rear haunches, and a sportier stance overall. Sounds like the CC so far, right?
Well, yes, but unlike the CC, the Arteon has a fancier interior, with standard features that include a leather-wrapped steering wheel, electronically controlled air conditioning, six-way power adjustable front seats, and a state-of-the-art infotainment system. As you advance higher into the lineup, it gets Alcantara and leather upholstery, aluminum-look pedals, and heated front seats.
What’s more, it’s also supposed to perform better. While the CC’s most powerful drivetrain had 208 horsepower and 210 pound-feet, the range-topping Arteon will come with 276 horsepower on tap. Granted it’s not a whole lot more, but the new four-door should be significantly lighter than its predecessor, which translates into a significantly better power-to-weight ratio.
