All-Carbon ATS Corsa RR Turbo Serie Carbonio is a Lethal Track Weapon
Ever Wondered What a Honda-Powered, 600-Horsepower Race Car Looks Like?
The ATS Corsa is an all-new motorsport division handled by the Italian boutique car manufacturer Automobili Turismo e Sport. As a beautiful addition to its super-exclusive $1 million ATS GT, the company recently released a Honda-powered race car called the RR Turbo. The RR is a wonderful mid-engine race car destined to jumpstart the ATS Corsa’s motorsport endeavours in the following years.
Eligible for the German VLN, French VdeV and, all European hill climb competitions, the ATS RR Turbo, with its 780 kilograms of weight and 592 horsepower hopes to become the first choice for privateers and professional racing teams. As I was rather curious about the amazing power to weight ratio and the 2.0-liter Honda engine ATS Corsa RR Turbo has in the back, I spoke with Daniele Maritan, President at ATS Automobili Italia. This is what he told me.
2018 ATS GT
Revived in 2012, almost 50 years after it was originally established in Italy, ATS, short for Automobili Turismo e Sport, returned to the market with a couple of open-cockpit, race-inspired sports cars. These prototype-style vehicles were followed by the Leggera roadster in 2015, but not much happened since then. Now, ATS is making a new comeback to the market, this time around with a potent supercar that promises to give Ferrari and Lamborghinis a run for their money. It’s called the ATS GT and pays tribute to ATS first road car, the 2500 GT, launched all the way back in 1964.
If you haven’t heard of ATS before, it was established in 1963 by former Ferrari employees Carlo Chiti and Giotto Bizzarrini after the "great walkout" of 1961, when Maranello lost some of its most valuable engineers. ATS was established as both an automobile constructor and a Formula One race team, but it survived for only two years. Its only road car, the 2500 GTS, wasn’t exactly successful either, but it remained in history as the second mid-engined sports car ever produced. Come 2017 and ATS is trying to recapture its former glory with the GT, a supercar that employs state of the art technology, a premium interior, and a powerful engine. It’s also the first ATS to join the small niche of exclusive supercars with high price tags and limited production runs.

Revived in 2012 after a 47-year hiatus, Automobili Turismo e Sport (ATS) took the lightweight sports car market by storm with the Sport, an affordable, no-nonsense barchetta with the looks of a prototype race car and just enough safety features to make it street-legal in certain markets. For 2016, ATS introduced numerous updates for the Sport lineup, but more importantly, it launched a new entry-level variant that can be raced in FIA events straight from the factory.
The model in question is dubbed "Dieci," which is Italian for "ten," and is eligible to compete in any Italian and European racing championship due to its CSAI- and FIA-approved gear. Moreover, it’s the most affordable race-ready Sport yet and the first to feature an engine that displaces less than 1.3 liters.
The new Sports Dieci will hit the market in the first half of 2016, but there’s no specific word as to where it will be sold. Don’t get your hopes up on seeing the Dieci on North American tracks anytime soon, as ATS has yet to establish a dealer network here.

In recent decades we witnessed the rebirth of many brands that have been disbanded more than 50 years ago. Bugatti and Maybach are the most well-known examples, but smaller ventures such as ATS (Automobili Turismo e Sport) have returned under new ownership as well. The latter was established by former Ferrari employees Carlo Chiti and Giotto Bizzarrini as a sports car constructor and racing team in 1963. ATS disappeared in 1965 and returned in 2012 with a new lineup of sports cars. After launching the Sport 1000 in 2012 and its updated Sport sibling in 2014, ATS is introducing the 490 Stradale.
As the name suggests, the 490 Stradale is a road-legal version of the company’s entry-level race car, and the second modern-day road-going ATS after the retro-styled 300 Leggera. Although eligible for road use, the 490 Stradale is very similar to its race-spec sibling, with the two sharing the same body and most of their internals. It’s not the most beautiful or the powerful sports car ever built, but ATS’ objective was to build a no-nonsense racer for the road. Needless to say, it succeeded, as the 490 Stradale is as fast as a Ferrari.

ATS first burst onto the scene in 2012 when it introduced the Sport 1000. The company then followed that up in early 2014 with a revised and renamed model called the ATS Sport. Now, ATS has a new model and, mercifully, it has a legitimate-sounding name. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the ATS Leggera.
The Leggera is another one of those retro-inspired sports roadsters that seem to be gaining even more popularity these days. But unlike the other retros, the Leggera doesn’t really offer a lot for the amount of money you’ll have to spend to buy one.
It looks completely mundane and the interior, while dressed in fancy Italian leather, really does bring you back to the days of bore..err, I mean yore.
The likely saving grace of the Leggera is its handling, something ATS consciously worked on to ensure that customers get a good ride, which leads me to believe that maybe a "good ride" is all this sports car really offers.

In 2012, ATS introduced the Sport 1000, and for 2014 ATS is back with a revised version of the model. The company dropped the "1000" from the name, but for the most part, the new ATS Sport is still what it was always meant to be.
ATS did make a handful of changes, highlighted by claims that the new model comes with 100 new upgrades that were added to improve the car’s aerodynamic and performance capabilities. That’s nice to hear for a model that exists specifically as an entry-level race car.
At the end of the day, the ATS Sport checks off a lot of the requirements needed in a race car. It’s not the most powerful race car that’s ever built but that’s not the ATS’ objective here.
The company built the ATS Sport for a specific purpose, and that is for racing. Give the ATS Sport a chance and you might be pleasantly surprised with it.
