Audi expands its crossover line with this compact Q
Audi has finally put to bed the rumors of an addition to its Q lineup of SUVs. Introduced at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, the 2017 Audi Q2 expands the automaker’s reach into the entry-level category of luxury crossovers.
Looking more like a high-riding hot hatch, the Q2 is a lightweight five door that helps usher in Audi’s new design styling. The front grille wears a new polygon shape while the C-pillar sports a “color blade” that can be customized, much like the first-generation R8. Six available engines, two transmissions, a bevy of safety equipment and driver aids, and Audi’s new glass gauge cluster make the Q2 perhaps the most tech-savvy option in the current crop of crossovers.
The technology extends into the unseen, as well. The Q2 is built from form-hardened steels that increase strength without adding excessive weight. Its size is fairly diminutive at only 13.7 feet long with a wheelbase of 8.5 feet. Its width is also tidy at 5.9 feet. Not only should this make the Q2 an outstanding performer in crash testing, but with a curb weight of only 2,656 pounds, the crossover should be a blast to drive.
Those passing judgment based on horsepower numbers shouldn’t be fooled – Audi says its engine lineup has been “right-sized” to provide the best power to weight optimization. The top performer of the bunch is the 2.0-liter TFSI gasoline mill that cranks out 190 horsepower. For turbodiesel fans, the 2.0-liter TDI is offered in two power levels, with the horsepower peaking at 190, matching the TFSI. Audi has not announced torque figures.
The Q2 is blazing new trails for Audi in the compact crossover segment, but with its light weight, tech-filled cabin, wide range of powertrains, and striking looks, it’s easy to foresee Audi’s domination over the competition.

The 2021 Audi SQ2 Combines Fresh Looks With Better Tech
The facelifted SQ2 won’t make the trip to the U.S. as it remains an EU-only affair, but at least it looks sharper than the car we saw take a bow two years ago, so that might mean something for prospective customers from Europe.
Mind you, the makeover is strictly of a cosmetic nature, so power and torque gains are off the table.

Performance crossovers and hot hatches make for an odd match, especially when you line them up side-by-side in a race. That, of course, didn’t stop Top Gear from trying to find out if the Volkswagen Golf R and the Mercedes-AMG A 35 can beat the Audi SQ2 and the Cupra Ateca in a drag race. While the disparity in size is evident between the two crossovers and the two hot hatches, all four use a similarly sized 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, including three that use the same engine that produces the same output. This makes for a compelling race that unfolded in a rather unexpected way.
Audi is in the advanced stages of testing an all-electric version of its Q2 crossover, the smallest high riding vehicle it currently sells. The Q2 e-Tron (which is what it will most likely be called) will complete the Q2 lineup that also includes the SQ2 performance model, as well as an extended wheelbase Q2 destined for the Chinese market. The Q2 EV won’t differ much visually from other models in the range, but with a careful look, you will be able to spot that it is the battery powered model. The camouflaged prototype snagged by our spies has no exhaust pipe, for instance, and it’s bound to have additional small exterior giveaways as to what it is. It’s also been suggested that the Q2 e-Tron might use the lengthened platform of the Chinese-market model, but at the moment we really cannot make a definitive judgment on that based solely on this batch of spy shots. Furthermore, the Q2 e-Tron may only be sold in China, although there is a good chance it will reach Europe as well - this would represent the first sale of a long-wheelbase Chinese-market Audi model in Europe.

To be honest, I did not see this coming. With theParis Show just around the corner, the SQ2’s unveiling today was a bit surprising. A happy surprise, I mean. The smallest crossover from the Audi stable just got pumped up with more power. The explosive engine is borrowed from the S3 and comes with a basket of performance-increasing additives.

How do you make a car special when it’s basically a substitute for your other models? As for the looks, the Q2 has it in its DNA, and the interior can put models twice its price to shame. So, what do you do? Simple - Make it more powerful. But doesn’t that leave you with the option of buying the Q3 instead? It does, but not when it’s retuned by ABT Sportsline company. ABT has reworked on the Q2’s most powerful petrol and diesel engines to give us a true road-runner.
Is China Getting a Longer Q2 EV?
We already know that the Audi Q2 is here because it was launched in 2017. We also know that a long-wheelbase version of the Q2, dubbed the Q2 L, will go on sale in China in 2019. Now it seems that the small crossover family is getting another member in the form of an all-electric Q2 L that’s tipped to make its debut in the next few years.
The Audi Q2 Deep Learning Concept is the coolest 1:8 Scale Model You’ve Ever Seen
Concept vehicles come in a variety of shapes and sizes. That’s just part of the game the auto industry has been playing to showcase new technologies or styling languages for its future production lineup. For its part, Audi has developed concept vehicles of its own, but none of those concepts are as different as the Audi Q2 “Deep Learning Concept,” a prototype that’s as unique for the technology it’s previewing as much as for it’s actual size.
See, the Q2 Deep Learning Concept isn’t a traditional car. Far from it, actually. It’s a 1:8 scale model that Audi built as a demonstrator to showcase the new deep learning technology. Without sounding too technical about the concept or deep learning technology, the whole thing is essentially Audi’s way of introducing the space of artificial intelligence into the auto industry. In the case of the Q2 Deep Learning Concept, that involves showcasing a system that allows vehicles to find parking spots entirely on their own.
One look at the Q2 concept tells you as much, particularly the presence of ultrasonic sensors scattered throughout the front and sides of the car. These sensors are responsible for scanning and retrieving data around the vehicle and work in concert with an on-board computer that, in turn, process the data and converts them into control signals for the car’s steering and powertrain. Once the data is processed, the car makes the appropriate responses and drives itself around a parking lot until it can find a spot to park, doing all of this by itself without any assistance from a human driver.
The whole system is underpinned by another technological development that Audi’s cooking up called “deep reinforcement learning.” In so many words, the process basically means that a specific car learns “knowledge” similar to us humans. In its case, it could revolve around trying to find easy parking spots before learning more sophisticated parking maneuvers over time.
All of these systems and advancements are being presented by Audi and the 1:8 scale Q2 Deep Learning Concept at the Conference and Workshop on Neural Information Processing Systems, an event that showcases the latest breakthroughs and developments related to the field of, you guessed it, artificial intelligence. The conference is being held in Barcelona, Spain and is ongoing until December 10, 2016.

2016 Audi Q2 Edition #1
Launched for the 2017 model year, the Q2 is the latest Audi nameplate to hit the market and the company’s smallest crossover yet. Underpinned by Volkswagen’s MQB platform that is shared with the Golf and the Audi TT among other cars, the Q2 was designed by Marc Lichte and shares styling cues with the larger Q3 and Q5 SUVs. Available with a selection of gasoline and diesel four-cylinder engines, the Q2 enables Audi to compete in a new niche. At 4.2 meters (165 inches) long, the Q2 is about the size of the Mini Countryman, which makes it just the second vehicle to join this premium class.
With no competition from Mercedes-Benz and BMW in the foreseeable future, the Q2 will most likely take a significant bite into the Countryman’s sales over the next years thanks to its more rugged design and luxurious interior. With the small crossover having just arrived in dealerships, Audi is launching a limited-edition model to sit at the top of the range. It’s called the Q2 Edition #1 and for the time being it is available in the United Kingdom only.
Essentially an S Line model with additional features, the Edition #1 sports a bespoke paint job and handful of custom interior features. On top of that, it comes with extra standard equipment to justify the more expensive price tag. But, more about that in our short review below.

2019 Audi SQ2
Placed just under the Q3 as far as badges go, the Q2 is more than just a shrunken Q3. Not only it sports unique fascias, it also has a coupe-style roof, setting it apart from its siblings and placing it in the same market as the BMW X2. After almost two years on the market, the regular crossover was joined by the performance-oriented SQ2 model, launched at the 2018 Paris Motor Show.
Sportier on the outside and powered by a beefed-up, turbocharged engine, the SQ2 raises above the competition in terms of looks and power. It basically offers you the sportiest and most potent option in this niche, at least until BMW rolls out the X2 M sometime in the future. Does it have enough power and extra features to stand out? Audi’s alphanumeric “Q#” nomenclature is finally complete after the company announced that it had successfully negotiated with Fiat Chrysler over the rights to the Q2 and Q4 names. Audi CEO Rupert Stadler made the announcement, saying that the two sides have reached an agreement that allowed Audi to take ownership of the two names.
Stadler didn’t dive into the specifics of the transaction, but he did hint that Audi had to give up some of its trademarks to FCA in exchange. In the purest sense, it was a trade that both sides agreed on, ending years of Audi’s relentless pursuit in completing its alphanumeric “Q#” lineup.
With the Q2 and Q4 names now in its possession, the German automaker is expected to waste little time putting the two names to use. The Q2, in particular, will be used on a sub-compact crossover that’s being tipped to make its debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show in March. The model will be available in the same choice of engines as the A1 and will use Volkswagen’s MQB platform.
Meanwhile, the Q4 will likely be used on a
like variant of the next-generation Audi Q3. Once it’s released, it would be slotted right smack in the middle of a segment that’s currently inhabited by its two biggest rivals, the BMW X4 and the Mercedes GLE-Class.
As for FCA, there’s no word on what it received from Audi as compensation for letting go of the Q2 and Q4. Back when it those two names were owned by FCA, Q2 was used as the name of its limited slip differential technology while Q4 was the designation for the all-wheel drive variants of the Maserati Ghibli and Quattroporte.
According to Stadler, no amount of the money was part of the deal so it points to the possibility that this trade could’ve been a simple trademark-for-trademark transaction.

With 2015 coming to a close, Audi has unveiled some of its plans for 2016, which will bring at least two brand-new vehicles into dealerships. As expected, next year will mark the unveiling of the second-generation Q5, a vehicle we’ve already spotted testing in the wild. Audi also confirmed it will launch the Q2 in 2016. Slated to slot beneath the Q3 in the company’s lineup, the Q2 will become Audi’s fourth crossover.
Ingolstadt is also busy working on its first mass-produced electric vehicle, which will arrive in 2018 and will be based on the e-tron Quattro concept. Unveiled at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, the e-tron Quattro is a low-slung SUV that uses three electric motors which are good for up to 496 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. If the production model remains true to the concept, Audi will roll out a competitor for the Tesla Model X.
Additionally, Audi announced it will expand its model range to include 60 different automobiles by 2020. This plan is far from new, but the statement confirms that the Germans are still looking to expand.
As far as investments go, Audi plans to spend more than €3 billion in 2016. That figure includes development of new technologies, new personnel, and updating its facilities around the world. Audi will also recruit additional experts in the field of future technologies such as alternative drive systems, lightweight construction, and IT specialists.
“With the current investment program, we obviously want to enhance the brand’s strong position, but at the same time, we aim to achieve additional financial scope by means of further process and cost optimization,” said Audi CFO Axel Strotbek.
On the flipside, the Board of Management has decided to postpone the construction of a new wind tunnel for one year.

Audi is on the brink of releasing something new and they’ve been boasting about it though the short teaser commercial you see here. As we reported before, Audi is skipping the 2014 Chicago Auto show in favor of a February 12th debut in an undisclosed location.
As the plot thickens, the secrecy of the vehicle in question starts to wane. In this second teaser, we get a short glimpse of what Audi’s got planned. Around the 16-second mark, the side mirror, window, door handle, and belt line are visible for a brief instant. Careful examination of that video frame suggests it’s the Audi Q2 Crossover, but we cannot be 100 percent certain.
The Q2 looks to be a two door coupe-like crossover that would potentially compete against the Range Rover Evoque Coupe. Since the Q2 would be a smaller crossover, it’s likely powered by a four-cylinder already found in Audi’s stable — the 2.0-liter TFSI four-pot normally found in the A3 sedan seems to fit well. In that application, it produces a respectable 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, which is plenty for a small crossover.
The other discernible feature in the video is the quattro emblem at roughly the 14-second mark, meaning this little guy will posses an impressive all-wheel-drive system. The last, and perhaps most telling feature we could glean from this video is the six-speed manual gear shifter prominently displayed at the 13-second mark.

Usually, future product offensive and market strategy is a close a guarded secret in any organization. However, there are ways to dig out information that could give us some idea as what goes on behind closed doors. Autocar recently got access to trademark applications filed by Audi which clearly reveal some of the models that could enter production in the near future.
The documents show a few SUVs that Audi plans to introduce into the market. Starting with the much talked about Q2, Audi wants to launch a high performance version based on the Q2, dubbed "SQ2". The company has already committed to a Range Rover Evoque rivaling Q4 and SQ4 on the aforementioned lines.
In recent times, the market has seen increased demand for luxury SUVs. Audi sees this as an opportunity to spread its wings. The company has trademarked the name "Q9" for a future large SUV. They also have plans to offer fuel-cell technology in their road cars. Hence the name "f-tron" pops up onto the trademarks list.

This year’s Shanghai Auto Show comes with great news, and not only for the Chinese market. In an interview with AutoCar, Audi technical chief, Wolfgang Durheimer, said that he is pushing to expand Audi’s SUV lineup with a new model placed above the current Q7 and a Q2.
The SUV placed above the current Q7 would likely be named Q8 and will "combine a Range Rover Sport-style sporting look with a very luxurious interior." Durheimer said that Audi has been inspired by Bentley’s decision to offer a SUV and he is also "encouraging" Lamborghini to progress with its SUV – remember, Lambo is under Audi’s control.
If built, the three SUVs - Audi, Bentley and Lamborghini - will most likely be developed in the same time, because, according to Durheimer VW encourages internal competition, as long as the models don’t overlap one another.
Until we will see the Q8 on the market, another SUV has priority: the Q2. It was previewed by the Crosslane Coupe Concept and Durheimer calls is a “top priority” within Audi. Rumor has it that the Q2 could arrive sometime in 2014.

From the looks of things, Audi’s lineup is set to grow exponentially in the near future. Earlier today we reported about a possible R10 diesel supercar and the possible TT GT3, and now we have news coming from the company’s SUV lineup. Audi’s current lineup includes the Q3, Q5 and Q7, so it doesn’t take a genius to piece together that the future could also bring a Q2, Q4, Q6 and Q8.
We already knew all about the Q6, but the Q2, Q4 and Q8 we knew very little about, until today. According to reports, the Q2 will be a three-door model sitting below the Q3, and will feature a striking new three-dimensional grille and a removable roof panel. It may have been previewed by the Crosslane Coupe Concept that we saw in Paris, but there is no confirmation of that.
All of the upcoming models above the Q3 are already confirmed as “under development.” This will start with the Q4 — a three-door model with a sportier appearance than the Q3. Above the upcoming Q6 and the existing Q7, Audi will add a Q8, which will take its styling cues from the Q7, but add a little more sportiness to it.
All four new models will be built on the company’s new MLB platform that will feature lightweight materials, which will help improve handling and reduce fuel consumption.
Audi has unveiled the new Crosslane Coupe Concept at the start of the 2012 Paris Auto Show. This concept offers a glimpse into the design language that will be found in the Q2 and all future Q models. It was built on a new Multimaterial Space Frame and features one of the most innovative and efficient plug-in hybrid drive systems. It also comes with a removable roof, but we highly doubt this feature will make it to production.
The new Crosslane Coupe Concept features some of the design elements already seen in the e-tron concepts, but with a more aggressive interpretation to make them suitable for a crossover model. These elements include a single-frame grille and trapezoidal headlights using Audi Matrix LED headlight technology, as well as large air intakes that ensure the best cooling for the hybrid system.
The concept is powered by a 1.5-liter three-cylinder TFSI combined with two electric motors for a total output of 177 HP. This power is enough to sprint the car from 0 to 60 mph in just 8.6 seconds and up to a top speed of 113 mph. These are not the best performance numbers out there, but the best part about the setup is that it delivers a money-saving fuel economy of 213.81 US mpg.
