Concorso Italiano

As I approached the entrance gate at the 2017 Concorso Italiano, I thought how fortunate I was to find this annual event so near to home. I took a moment to reflect on its importance to me, and probably to mostly other attendees too. What does Concorso bring each and every year? Plenty! We all know it brings droves of Italian Automobiles. But Concorso brings automotive glamor too. Cars are immaculately prepared by their owners, and in arrive in show condition. There are so many of them, usually numbering around a thousand. There are some extremely rare cars in the mix. Concorso brings us the individual story of these rare cars, often told by the owners themselves as the cars traverse and pause on the automotive stage during the day, while the owners relate their background.

Let’s see how the day went...

It is not often when both quality and quantity are found together. However, at Concorso Italiano they are always found together! Quantity manifests itself in a variety of ways at Concorso. Every year there are a very large number of classy, show prepared Italian automobiles on display, often exceeding 1,000 cars. The annual Centerpiece Display provides special recognition to a particular marque or model. Marques and models with Silver or golden anniversaries of are arrayed with special recognition. There is also abundance in the number of ancillary attractions at Concorso Italiano including on-stage appearances of cars with their owners, industry headliners, the on-stage fashion show, even a few boats and motorcycles, and the Fashion Village adding lifestyle attractions as well as art, jewelry, a beauty studio, items for children, and fine artists actually at work.

With the 66th annual Monterey Car Week kicking off in a few days, some 85,000 auto enthusiasts are expected to arrive on the central California coast to take part in various car shows, auctions, racing events, and cruises. However, attendees will need to share the road with the 5,000 firefighters currently battling a devastating wildfire located just south of Monterey.

One of the biggest issues is access to Highway 1, the main artery that runs north to south through the central coast. With the huge increase in traffic expected for MCW, concerns are being raised over whether or not firefighters will be able to get to and from the frontlines.

However, according to a report from local NBC affiliate KSBW, Cal Fire and the California Highway Patrol have given the event the go-ahead, and are working with organizers to make sure firefighting efforts aren’t hampered.

Some of the changes include a truncated route for the Tour d’Elegance, a classic car cruise that traditionally includes a run south into Big Sur. This year, the route has been shortened to 35 miles, rather than the usual 70. There will also be stricter parking enforcement, and additional law enforcement in high-traffic areas.

So far, the Soberanes wildfire has burned more than 70,000 acres and destroyed 57 homes. Hundreds of locals have been forced to flee, and the fire has been blamed for three injuries and one fatality. Acting Governor Tom Torlakson has declared a state of emergency in Monterey County.

Thankfully, the majority of the firefighting effort is now centralized south of Monterey, and it’s expected that the increase in traffic won’t have a major impact on firefighting efforts.

“We feel pretty comfortable that we are able to get in and out of the areas that we need to in case of emergency,” Cal Fire Capt. Mark Edria told KSBW.

Cal Fire is reporting that the fire is currently 60 percent contained. You can find updates on the firefighting efforts here.

The wildfire is thought to have originated from an illegal campfire in Garrapata State Park.

Concorso Italiano’s celebrated their 30th anniversary on August 15th. That is a long time pulling Italy’s finest exotic vehicles together for all to admire. The event was well attended by owners displaying their cars and fans coming to see them.

Three anniversaries were celebrated in all.This year of 2015 is also the 60th anniversary of Ferrari in the United States. And for Lamborghinithis year marks the 25th anniversary for their renowned Diablo.

I will always remember the first time I attended the Concorso Italiano. To me the sight was a bit like rolling ocean waves offshore. But instead of waves of water, these were waves of colorful, exotic Italian automobiles covering the undulating green golf fairways.

“What an opportunity,” I thought. To explore at close range most of, and maybe all of the exotic cars that I knew of, and probably some I did not know of. Just like show-car dreamland. But this was not a dream. It was right in front me.

Concorso Italiano debuted back in 1985 and it features all things Italian, especially Italian automobiles. The event takes place each August at the Monterey Peninsula where more that 40,000 automotive enthusiasts gather to celebrate their passion for vintage, classic and exotic automobiles.

Each year, the event brings together a total of 1,200 collectible Italian automobiles, motorcycles, and boats. They are accompanied by an impressive number of non-Italian exotic and classic automobiles. The event however is not only about cars, it brings together elements of Italian style such as fashion, food, music and art, which is why it grows bigger and bigger each year. Along with having lots of cool cars on display, Concorso Italiano is also a major contributor to several local, national and international charities.

In 2013, the event will start on August 16th at Laguna Seca Golf Ranch, Monterey, California. Spectators can buy tickets online here. The price of the ticket is $150 and is valid for one day only, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.. If you have an Italian vehicle you want to present on the show you will also have to go online and complete a registration form and pay $150 per vehicle.

The Monterey Car Week is one of those rare occasions in the calendar where car enthusiasts from all corners of the world all come out of the woodwork to proudly display their rare and classic collections. It’s an opportunity to see and be seen with some of the most exotic cars in the world, and this year’s staging of the Concorso Italiano, one of the highlight events of the week, hasn’t disappointed.

One car gathering that drew a ton of attention was the get-together of the ultra-rare Ferrari 288 GTOs. Considered as one of the rarest modern supercars in history – only 272 were ever produced – the 288 GTO gathering became even more special considering that out of those 272 that were produced, none were ever sold in the United State. But alas, there were 15 288 GTOs present for this one, including the widely-regarded unicorn Evoluzione model that was used by Ferrari as a peg to develop the F40.

Of course, this gathering of 288 GTOs wouldn’t have been possible without someone organizing the whole thing. That credit belongs to Joe Sackey, the author of the upcoming The Book of the Ferrari, who personally orchestrated for the rarest of rare Ferraris to make a surprise appearance at the Concorso Italiano. What made this event all the more special was the fact that the 288 GTOs – all 272 of them – are celebrating their 25th anniversary.

For a car that’s this rare to show up 15 strong – on their 25th anniversary, no less – is a treat that all of those who were fortunate enough to witness would never forget.

Wine connoisseurs who happen to chance upon the Concorso Italiano on August 14, 2009 will be treated to a wine-tastic surprise as Pininfarina Wines is set to make a return appearance at the high-end car exhibit. After a successful debut during last year’s Concorso Italiano, the winemakers are poised to return to provide visitors of this year’s event with the best Cabernet Sauvignon grown in Napa Valley.

If anybody does decide to hit up the Concorso, they can find the Pininfarina Pavilion at the center of the Concorso near the stage where they can be treated to a mouth-watering red wine experience courtesy of Aaron Heck of Heck Estates, which collaborated with Paolo Pininfarina to produce these classic wines. Incidentally, Heck Estates will also display a number of distinctive varietals from Kenwood Vineyards, giving those in attendance more wine tasting options to choose from.

For the longest time, Pininfarina has dabbled in a number of industries, including design, engineering, and manufacturing. Likewise, the company has also been associated with a number of today’s most explosive auto brands like Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, and Lancia. With the Pininfarina Wine, the company is set to make its mark in the wine industry, something that it is expected to show off to the public at this year’s Concorso Italiano.
