The late ’60s produced some really incredible cars. It was an era when the Ferrari 275 GTB/4 and the Lamborghini Miura were breaking production car speed records and ushering in the era of the supercar. But, these cars weren’t how the makers of exotic Italian machines were making their money — it’s something we sometimes forget today, but it was bigger 2+2 touring cars that were the bread and butter of high-end Italian sports car market at the time. Lamborghini was a bit late with its offering in this niche, but most would agree that it was worth the wait.

Lamborghini’s first 2+2 was the Espada, named for the Spanish word for “sword.” It was one of the more indirect references the company would use to bullfighting, but it still counts. Like the Miura, it offered outrageous styling, although the design was different enough to not look derivative. It also offered a ton of power and class-leading interior space. It should hardly come as a surprise that it became Lamborghini’s best-selling model for years to come. The car was tweaked several times over the years, and there are three different series of Espadas, but the biggest change from one to the next was always the interior design.

The 10 Best Lamborghinis Ever Built

The 10 Best Lamborghinis Ever Built

Italy’s most iconic Bulls!

One of the most iconic sports car manufacturers, Lamborghini was born out of Ferruccio Lamborghini’s frustration over a bad experience with a Ferrari he bought and the way Enzo treated him. Having built tractors since 1948, Ferruccio decided he could do a better sports car and launched Automobili Lamborghini in 1963. But while Ferrari has produced over 50 nameplates to date, Lambo remained a lower profile carmaker. Sant’Agata has only produced 21 models up until 2018, including some limited-edition nameplates based on existing supercars.

Some became iconic from day one, while some gained notoriety as they became classics, A few of them remain somewhat anonymous due to the period they were launched or their subpar performance. Still, there are plenty of cars to choose from to round up a Top 10 list, and we did just that. It includes both modern and classic models, but I went for specific versions instead of nameplates, as these usually spanned over many years and included many different iterations. Check out my list below and let me know if I should’ve included other models too in the comments box.

Lamborghini restores Espada and Islero for their 50th anniversary celebrations

Lamborghini restores Espada and Islero for their 50th anniversary celebrations

Iconic Lambos will also go on a tour across central Italy

In a time when modern supercars are defined by how outlandish they can look, the Lamborghini Espada and Lamborghini Islero provide reminders that there once was a time when “sexy” didn’t always equate to having the most menacing-looking car in the business. The two Italian icons are still considered two of the finest Lamborghinis ever created, and as the two celebrate their golden jubilee, Lamborghini announced that it has successfully restored the Islero and the Espada that belong to the Lamborghini Museum.

Jay Leno Proudly Shows Off His Lamborghini Espada: Video

Jay Leno Proudly Shows Off His Lamborghini Espada: Video

At one point, "Jay Leno’s Garage" was made up of just this car

Jay Leno’s Garage has had a string of interesting episodes recently as the noted celebrity and car enthusiast has brought in some interesting cars from all over the place to his garage. This time around, the popular automotive web series is devoid of any guest appearances because the car taking center stage – the Lamborghini Espada – is one that’s owned by Leno himself.

By and large, the Espada has remained as one of Lamborghini’s most evocative works. Leno himself admitted this when he said that it’s one of those cars that people either loved or hated. There was very little, if any, middle ground to people’s affections for the grand tourer. But even if it did earn a polarizing reputation, the Espada was still one of the most successful models Lamborghini has ever created with more than 1,200 units being made. It took the Lamborghini Countach, which to this day is credited as Lamborghini’s first real supercar, to surpass that total, a fact that wasn’t lost on Leno.

His Espada, in particular, has a unique history of its own. The comedian even recounted the time when he bought the car in 1986, choosing it over a “mid-sixties Ferrari 330 GTC,” a car that’s worth millions of dollars today. You could tell that a part of Leno regretted picking the Espada over the 330 GTC, but for the most part, he still considers this Lamborghini as one of the most important cars of his collection. It’s undergone a few restorations in its lifetime, most recently a full cosmetic restoration that has led to the car looking about as brand-new as a brand new Espada could look.

There are plenty of notable tidbits throughout this episode about the car and Leno’s experience driving it throughout the years. But because this particular episode is so interesting, it’s better if we leave the details and the stories to the comedian himself.

1972 Lamborghini Espada Series II for sale on eBay

1972 Lamborghini Espada Series II for sale on eBay

For those of you who can remember far back enough to appreciate a real classic sports car, you might just be pleased to see a vintage 1972 Lamborghini Espada Series II is for sale on eBay, and the current bid is only $20,200. So if you hurry, this Italian sword can be yours for quite a bargain. The Lamborghini Espada Series II is powered by a V12 sourced from the sideways engined Miura S shifted with a 5 speed manual transmission and sucking down enough air through a set of carbs to make 350 HP, and while that may not sound like a lot, almost 40 years you needed a whole lot of detroit iron to get anywhere near those numbers.

The Series II Espada was actually known as the 400GTE when the Italian super car made its first appearance at the 1970 Brussels Motor Show. Aside from the updated exterior styling, the most noticable difference about the Series II was the new dashboard layout, while rear seat passengers are able to ride in even more comfort thanks to additional ventilation and the addition of lighting mounted in the center arm rest. So even if you have kids, or grand kids, or just need a place to put the dog and want to relive a dream from your child hood, then this Espada might just be what you are looking for.
