The legend returns after more than two decades!
The fifth generation of the iconic sports car, the 2020 Toyota Supra, marked the brand’s return to the U.S. market after 21 years (and in Japan after 17). Unveiled at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show, the Supra Mk. 5 goes on sale for the 2020 model with a high-performance six-cylinder engine and Toyota’s latest technology. Unlike its predecessor, the fifth-gen Supra wasn’t developed in-house by Toyota. The coupe is the result of a long collaboration with BMW, from which Toyota borrowed the chassis, engines, and transmission. Together with its motorsport division, Gazoo Racing, Toyota designed the exterior, the cabin, and retuned the suspension system. The new Supra is also the first vehicle developed by Gazoo Racing to go global. These cars were previously restricted to the Japanese market.

If I were to ask you the similarities between the Mercedes-AMG A45 S and the new Toyota Supra, you’ll quickly dismiss them as vehicles from different genres. This Supra looks identical to that one but there’s no V-12 under the hood. Still, it makes for quite a unique ride.
Just like the Supra, the GR Yaris Might Be More Powerful Than Toyota Says
Remember earlier this year when it was revealed that the Toyota Supra actually produced more power than Toyota advertised? Well, it looks like it isn’t the only Toyota that’s more powerful than we thought.
A recent dyno test conducted on the GR Yaris revealed that Toyota’s firecracker of a hot hatch comes with a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine that produced more than Toyota’s claimed output of 268 horsepower and 272 pound-feet of torque. A video of the GR Yaris getting tested on a dyno shows just how much more power the turbocharged three-cylinder can crank out, and without dumping any spoilers, it’s a lot of extra power that we didn’t think the GR Yaris had at its disposal.

This Toyota Supra Mule Could Be Spitting the Tune of The BMW M3’s S58 Inline-Six
Toyota revived the Supra in 2019 after a 17-year hiatus and opted to use two BMW-sourced engines. The Supra is available with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with up to 255 horsepower and a 3.0-liter inline-six rated at up to 382 horsepower, both shared with a big variety of BMW models, including the 3 and 4 Series, the X5, and the Z4.
The top 382-horsepower engine, shared with M-badged Bimmers, was recently added for the 2021 model year, but word has it that Toyota wants an even more powerful mill. The folks over at Statesidesupercar released a video showing a Supra being driven hard on the Nurburgring, suggesting that this mule might feature the beefed-up inline-six engine from the newly launched BMW M3 and M4.
The Four-Cylinder 2021 Toyota Supra Is As good As Expected
Back in January, we told you that thefour-cylinder Toyota Supra was coming for 2021, and it’s definitely the car you want. While the four-cylinder Supra will offer significantly less power – 255 horsepower vs. 382 horsepower – it will have better weight distribution (50-50), less weight (about 170 pounds less), and will have a more affordable price. In short, it’s good on its own or a perfect base for those that start to wrench and modify the second a new sports car is delivered. We haven’t had the chance to get our hands on a new four-cylinder Supra, but our friends over at Car & Driver did. As it turns out, we were definitely right – the 2020 Toyota Supra is as impressive as expected and maybe even better than expected.
Skip the 2021 Toyota Supra Because A Manual Transmission Might Be Available in 2022
By the time February 2020 came around, we learned that the 2021 Toyota Supra would end up being better than the 2020, giving some buyers the shaft. Shortly after that news came about, Toyota tried to justify this move and explained how it was looking to improve the Supra year after year.
