Dodge Grand Caravan

FCA announced that Dodge will end production of the Grand Caravan after the 2020 model year. The iconic minivan traces its roots back to 1983 when the Caravan made its debut and started the whole minivan craze in the United States. The Grand Caravan goes into the history books as the best-selling minivan in the U.S., with almost 123,000 units sold in 2019. The decision, which seems a bit weird, comes as Dodge decided to focus on performance models.

Soccer mom or not, you must appreciate the Dodge Grand Caravan’s extremely versatile interior. The people hauler is more often than not praised for its great gas mileage, comfortable seats, and huge cargo room. Sure, it’s not your Lamborghini Huracan, and reliability could have been better (that also depends on who you ask, to some extent), but all in all, it did the job.

It was not just Mazda which brought an anniversary edition model to Chicago Auto Show.The MX-5 Miata 30th Anniversary Edition might have stolen the limelight, but Chrysler and Dodge have launched anniversary editions of their minivans as well. Perhaps, they went unnoticed because they are humble minivans and not some fancy roadsters. Oh, automotive enthusiasts, thou art mean.

Thirty-five years after introducing the Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is honoring the minivan OGs with a pair of 35th Anniversary special edition models, featuring the Dodge Grand Caravan and the Chrysler Pacifica. Like most special edition models, the Chrysler Pacifica and Dodge Grand Caravan 35th Anniversary Editions are packed with exclusive touches, including fancy paint finishes and special badges. All special edition features come in the form of packages. The special edition package is available to a range of Pacifica and Grand Caravan models, including the Pacifica Hybrid. Pricing details have yet to be released, but the 35th Anniversary packages for both the Pacifica and the Grand Caravan will be available sometime in summer of 2019. The Chrysler Pacifica and Dodge Grand Caravan 35th Anniversary Editions will debut at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show.

Dodge has just given us some images and details on the new 2011 Grand Caravan. For some time, theGrand Caravan has been less than grand, but Dodge hopes that this newest version will change that and put them in front of Honda and Toyota in the minivan game.

The van will pack Dodge’s new Pentastar V6, as well as a revised suspension that Dodge hopes will make the van more pleasing to drive. We haven’t been told what was changed, but the press release says that “virtually everything” was updated.

The motor is the 3.6-liter V6 and that will be connected to a six-speed automatic. That motor will replace all three of the previous motors. The V6 puts out 283 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, the same numbers as the new Avenger.

While we aren’t sure if a V6 only van will sell well, we are sure that buyers will love the new interior with top-notch materials, better seats, and redesigned gauges. The outside of the Grand Caravan will get some LED taillights and a new front fascia.

We’ll have to wait and see how the van compares with the new offerings from Honda and Toyota, which have been stellar.

Although we think that it’s nearly impossible to have a manly minivan, certain companies are trying. Toyota is working on making the Sienna SE cool by airing commercials of dorky parents who are acting like teenagers. Apparently, Toyota believes that this will make their Sienna cool, but we think they have failed.

Now Dodge is trying with their granddaddy minivan, the new Grand Caravan. The reason people buy this sort of van is because they need to haul children. Not saying that this is a bad thing, people carriers were made for a reason. Just don’t expect to look cool or manly behind the wheel.

Yet, Dodge is trying to change all that by appealing to men. They are planning to give the Grand Caravan a sportier looking front end with a black and gray interior. Although they tried, Dodge needs to do a bit more.

The new model will be based on the Caravan R/T that was shown at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show and it could be here as early as three months. We think that this van will flop. Dodge needs to give the van an overhaul, not orange paint and body kits.

Remember that scene from Anchorman where Ron Burgundy and his news team got involved in a "News Team Royal Rumble" with its local news competition that included, among others Tim Robbins, Luke Wilson, and a Mexican Ben Stiller?

This is what this Dodge Grand Caravan commercial looks like, only that they’ve got people wearing cat, mice, and dog masks. Huh? Where did that come from? Well, Dodge is promoting their new Grand Caravan as a vehicle that "has everything, you can do anything". Apparently, that "anything" also involves showing up for a warehouse brawl while wearing Garfield on your face.

Come to think of it, they do deserve props for this out-of-the-box ’cats versus mice versus dogs’ idea. It’s different and unique, but we don’t see how this fits into Dodge’s attempt at targeting a younger audience, unless they’re also going for the young-and-weird market.

Sure, there are all kinds of technologies out there that can make driving a whole lot easier. Everyone was pretty happy when cruise control came out, impressed when automakers were able to provide a backup sensor for cars, and ecstatic when the navigation systems guided us to where we needed to go. This invention, however, can cause people to either be elated or scared to death. We are talking about being able to drive a car with just your eyes.

German researchers have discovered a new technology called eyeDriver that will allow a vehicle to respond to the driver’s eye movement steering the car in whatever direction the driver’s eyes take it. This is done mounting cameras to a bicycle helmet (chosen due to its ergonomic shape). One camera is pointed to the road while the other is fixed on the driver’s eyes reading their every instruction. Raul Rojas, an artificial intelligence researcher at Berlin’s Free University, and his team were able to demonstrate this phenomenon at an airport in Germany last Friday using a Dodge Caravan decked out in lasers, cameras, and scanners.

For the soccers moms who spend some time on the road and also some time on the track, Dodge is bringing to us the Caravan Road and Track (R/T). Guarantee you will be the fastest mom on the block to arrive at school to pick up your loved ones. Don’t expect this concept vans on road anytime soon though, as security conscious moms are very unlikely to spend the extra cash for the extra horses.
