The 2021 BMW M3 comes with extra power, AWD, and more Bimmerness than ever before

The 2021 BMW M3 (G80) is the sixth-generation of the company’s high-performance compact sedan. Based on the seventh-generation 3 Series (G20), it debuts many firsts for the nameplate. Design-wise, 2021 M3 stands out thanks to its massive kidney grille, a feature it shares only with the M4 as of 2020. It’s also the first M3 model available in two versions: there’s a base M3 with 473 horsepower and a beefed-up M3 Competition model with 503 horsepower. The two-model lineup is an answer to the Mercedes-AMG C 63, available in standard and S guises. The 2021 M3 is also the first of its kind to feature an all-wheel-drive system. It’s available as an option for the M3 Competition trim. Unlike its competitors, the 2021 M3 retains a manual transmission, offered as standard on the base model. Let’s find out more about all of the above in the review below.

BMW M Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary With Special Logo

BMW M kicks of a 50-year celebration with a new logo, but there’s definitely more to come

BMW M was established back in May 1972 in order to facilitate BMW’s racing program. It started small, with only 35 employees and its first project was the 3.0 CSL. The company grew slowly, and in 1978 it revealed its official M-badged car for the public: the M1. Today BMW M offers modified versions for nearly every BMW nameplate, with the exception of the Z4, 7-Series and X1.

And now, to celebrate half a century of existence, BMW M is offering its customers the possibility to decorate their cars with a special logo inspired by the classic "BMW Motorsport" logo.

The BMW M3 Touring Isn’t Coming Stateside Because It’s Bad for Business

You’d like an M3 Touring, and so would I, but BMW at least has a good reason for saying no.

It was in mid-October when we laid eyes on the BMW M3 Touring as it did some hardcore testing on the Nürburgring. It was wearing that controversial big grille, an aggressive front fascia, and looking every bit the M3 Touring we always wanted. Then we learned that the M3 Touring won’t be coming to the United States. The reason behind it, strangely enough, has nothing to do with the lack of interest in wagons or the love for SUVS. In fact, it’s actually BMW making a good business decision.

BMW’s Future Designs Need to be Bold and Meaningful

Believe it or not, a car’s exterior design is about more than choosing to be bold or bland

As BMW navigates the inevitable course to the future that doesn’t only include electrification of its lineup, but digitalization and sustainability, the company has been forced to rethink everything it stands for, all the way down to a design standpoint. This was never more evident than when BMW released the controversially grilled BMW M3 and the even bolder M4. Drag races are fun when the cars involved in the race are closely matched and you don’t know which one’s going to win. They’re even more fun when they’re vastly different from each other, but make for a hell of a race. Or, sometimes the underdog snatches a win over the car expected to be the winner. However, there are some lopsided races once in a while, and this one between the BMW M3 Competition and the Volkswagen Golf R is one of them. Both the cars are known for their performance, but when they came face-to-face, it was a different story altogether.

Can An Old Tuned BMW M3 Beat The New M3?

The new M3 features a new gearbox and newer tech, but the old M3 makes 190 horses more

The new BMW M3 was the talk of the town for the longest time for its face. The company didn’t change it despite the outcry, but I guess it is time to move on. That aside, the car is still a great handler. The switch to the torque converter from a dual-clutch has also drawn polarizing opinions, but overall the new M3 is a delight on the tarmac.

This Video Review of the 2003 BMW E46 M3 Will Take You Back to Simpler and Better Times

The E46 M3 is a banner car for that time in recent history when the past really shook hands with the future

The go-fast version of the E46-generation 3 Series is seen as some sort of a last hurrah since it stands as the final M3 to be powered by a naturally aspirated inline-six engine. With turbocharging being the norm nowadays, an N/A M3 may never return and, as such, we look back fondly to the E46 M3, the first properly fast M3.

Or do we? Many criticized BMW for fitting this M3 with the SMG-II semi-automatic transmission that was lackluster at low revs and oftentimes sluggish when compared to the manual six-speed transmission. Then there was also the crowd that bought M3s that blended in well with the rest of Bimmer owners that give the Munich-based company a bad rep because of the way they behave in traffic. RCR dives in to give its opinion on whether the E46 M3 was a hero or a villain.

The Next-Gen BMW M3 Will Probably Be Electric

A lot can change in six years, and that will probably make an electric M3 easily possible

The current BMW M3 (and M4, for that matter) are so new that the welds on the have yet to cool, so why would I even consider talking about the next-gen model already? Because time tends to fly, and the next-gen M3 will actually be here before we know it. Add to this the fact that automotive technology is advancing incredibly fast, and it’s hard not to think about how different the next-gen M3 might actually be. Will BMW follow the hybridization route or will it go one step further and make the BMW M3 (And M4) full-on electric vehicles? I’m going to go out on a limb and say it’ll be the latter, and my reasoning behind this is rooted deeply in logic.

BMW’s new design language has raised more than a few eyebrows in recent times. The G20 generation of the BMW M3 has taken a lot of flak because of its looks, and because it’s the brand’s best-selling performance car.

Needless to say, many of the more traditional BMW fans see the new design of the M3 as a botched plastic surgery, mostly with regards to the front fascia. We are not going to get into details about the front grille design, as this is a subject as hackneyed as the death of the Dodge supercharged V-8 engines or the fact that the Corvette is now a mid-engine Ferrari-looking thing. But let’s get back to the new BMW M3 because the grille is just part of the issue.

Can A Tuned, 490-HP BMW M240i Take On the Porsche 911CS and BMW M3?

BMW M240i proves that looks aren’t everything in a drag race

Sometimes, the best drag races are those that have some form of handicap. Take this race hosted by YouTube channel Track Day, for example. It’s a three-car throw down involving an F80-generation BMW M3 Competition, a 992-generation Porsche 911 Carrera S, and a BMW M240i. The latter is the obvious underdog in this race, but this isn’t your stock M240i that comes into the race with significant modifications, none more important than an engine upgrade that helps the turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine produce more output than both the M3 Competition and the 911 Carrera S. The scales tip differently now, do they? Does the modified M240i have what it takes to beat the M3 Competition and the 911 Carrera S? Let’s find out.

See, there’s more to the kidney grille than meets the eyes, and thanks to Bimmer’s new “M3 and M4 - Explained” web series, we get a peek behind the curtain, or, in this case, a peek behind the two kidney grilles.

Throwback: BMW’s Holiday Video Features Rarely Seen M3 E30 Pickup

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

With Christmas literally being a few days away, automakers have started rolling out their holiday greetings for the masses. BMW’s M Division is the latest to do so with a holiday-themed ad that features a vehicle that was never sold to the public. We’ve seen it a handful of times over the years, but this is probably the first time Bimmer is using the pickup version of the BMW M3 E30 for any of its promotional videos. Consider it a treat then that BMW is doing it for the holidays. Merry Christmas, indeed!

BMW M3 needs no introduction. The new model with the kidney grille has faced a lot of flak, but that’s because the yesteryear models had set the bar so high. Chip Foose redesigns the BMW M4 grille, but does it look better?

The latest BMW M3 and M4 sports compacts are the most powerful of their kind, but they’re also highly controversial due to a single design feature: the kidney grille. Not just wider than before, the grille also extends all the way to the bottom of the front fascia. This design cue alone makes the M3 and M4 looks significantly different than their predecessor, despite the rest of the car many of the old features. American car design Chip Foose also thinks that the M3 and M4 look a bit strange, so he did his own version of BMW’s new kidney grille.

The BMW M3 E46 is considered one of the greatest driving machines of all time, and its predecessor, the BMW M3 E36, wasn’t that far behind. The two M3s from yesteryear are largely responsible for turning BMW’s M division into a household name. That legacy lives to this day now that the all-new M3 G80 has arrived.

But this isn’t about the M3 G80 or its roots to both the E36 and E46. This is about the two M3 legends taking on a different M car: the equally all-new BMW M2 Competition.
