The 2020 Land Rover Defender is a brand-new SUV that revives a nameplate that the British firm discontinued in 2016. But not only it marks the Defender’s return after three years, it also marks the nameplate’s return to the U.S. market after 22 years. The 2020 Defender is a familiar sight thanks to its boxy design, but that’s the only feature that reminds of its predecessor. Underneath, the 2020 Defender sports a modern, all-aluminum monocoque architecture and, for the first time, it comes with a mild hybrid drivetrain.
The 2020 Defender also comes into dealerships with a complete engine lineup that includes both gasoline and diesel powerplants. However, the oil burners aren’t available in the United States. The 2020 Defender remains as versatile as its predecessor with various interior layouts available. You can order it as a classic five seater, but you can also opt for a front jump seat and turn it into a six seater. As far as SUVs go, the Land Rover Defender has been the talk of talks in recent times. That is a big achievement, given the variety of SUVs. Not to mention the crazy demand. We already know that, for 2022, the Defender will get a 5.0-liter V-8 engine with 525 horsepower (391 kilowatts) and 461 pound-feet (625 Nm). We expect this to be the familiar from Jaguar 5.0-liter supercharged V-8. However, this will not be the top version for long, as something bigger is coming. This, of course, being the Defender SVR, which will reportedly put out in excess of 600 horsepower, from a BMW engine.
2022 Land Rover Defender Trophy Edition
Land Rover set out to tell a story with its latest special edition – The Defender Trophy Edition. It’s designed specifically to pay tribute to the Defender’s long-standing expedition legacy. It’s inspired by the Land Rover Classic Defender Works V8 Trophy and is based on the 2022 Defender 110 P400 X-Dynamic SE (boy that’s a mouthful.) Production will be capped at 220 units, some of which will undoubtedly be equipped with the Extended Black Exterior Pack that you see on the model in these images.
As you’d expect from Land Rover, the Defender Trophy Edition comes standard will all kinds of extra all-terrain equipment including a roof rack, front under shield, deployable ladder, winch installation kit, air compressor, an deep-sided floormats. The list continues with a tow hitch receiver, ClearSight RearView, and Air Suspension. This limited edition will be available from August 2021, and will be priced at $90,000. If you’re in Europe, I’m sorry to break your heart, but this is a U.S. only affair.

I am in love with the new Land Rover Defender. But at first, I was not. I was disappointed with its move towards an unibody chassis, and I have resented all the "soft-touches" Land Rover prepped for it. But I have changed my mind.
True, it is a mommy automobile, and a kids-to-school mover, but it is the best mommy automobile and kids transportation device I have ever seen. It’s tough, robust, well-engineered, rugged, and seriously capable. Plus, Land Rover offers it with 170 accessories, like roof racks, tow hitches, steel wheels, a rinse system, an armrest cooler, and a front bench-style seat. Find me another car that offers all of that. There’s no way you can. But!
There is a big "but" here. The 2020 Land Rover Defender is seriously expensive. It starts at $50,925 (plus destination charges) in the U.S. That’s huge. That is the price of the base BMW X4 xDrive30i. Take a deep dive in the configurator and you can spec it out at more than 100 grand. That is absurd.
In 2012, the Land Rover Defender started at $22,000 in Australia. Then again, the only thing that’s left from the old Defender on the new one is the name. Nothing else. This is a wholly new car. I only hope that Land Rover invested heavily in quality control. If it manages to ace reliability and dependability surveys with the new Defender, I’d say that the price may even be justified.

The 2020 Land Rover Defender is finally here after what seemed like a lifetime of waiting. While it was well-received, for the most part, there are a couple of things that has rubbed everyone the wrong way. The first “issue” is that the new Defender won’t be offered in a pickup truck guise, despite its history as a pickup in various markets around the world. Leaked LEGO Technic Kit Gives Us Our First Glimpse at the 2020 Land Rover Defender
The Land Rover Defender is coming to the U.S. after an absence spanning more than two decades. But before the 2020 Defender hits our shores, it could be pre-empted by a smaller, but no less awesome, version. This, folks, is LEGO’s latest masterpiece: a 2,573-piece LEGO Technic replica of the iconic Land Rover Defender, complete with a working steering mechanism, a four-speed sequential gearbox, a chassis with three differentials, an independent suspension, and a winch that actually works. Mind you, this is a LEGO Technic version of the OG Land Rover Defender, though, with the specs, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was the real deal. The LEGO Technic Land Rover Defender is scheduled to come out in October, one month after the actual 2020 Defender debuts, presumably at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show.
2020 Land Rover Defender reveals a bit more skin in new photos and video
Production of the all-new 2020 Land Rover Defender is reportedly ramping up at the company’s plant in Nitra, Slovakia. We’re still a few months away from seeing the finished product, though, and many details surrounding it are still not very clear.
We have had our best look at it so far, courtesy of an official video (and photo gallery) that highlighted the fact that pre-production prototype Defenders were actually used by park rangers in Kenya. The video is meant to evoke the Defender’s outdoorsy spirit and its capability in the toughest conditions in the world, but what we were more interested in was to get a better glimpse of of the car itself - and we did, even though the video doesn’t really have any clear closeups of the car.

The Land Rover Defender and its boxy appearance won over enthusiasts thanks to its timeless styling and off-road capabilities. The last model, which was largely unchanged since it hit the market in 1983 was discontinued in 2016, and there has been a cry for a new generation ever since. Recently, Land Rover decided to show off one image of the new Defender, and everyone was drooling. But, not as much as you’re going to drool today as Land Rover not only released a handful of official spy shots but has finally confirmed its debut in 2019 as a 2020 model. The best part is that it’s coming to America!
If you just glance over Land Rover Defender history, you’ll see that the Defender hit the market in 1983 and stayed there, only taking on mild changes, until 2016. However, if you look a little deeper, you’ll realize that the Defender actually traces its roots back to 1948 when the first Series Land Rover made its debut at the Amsterdam Motor Show in April of that year. These defenders that were, oddly, quite similar to the model from the 80s, 90s, and 2000s (with a retro vibe to them, of course) but they were actually built by the Rover Company from 1948 to 1967 and then by British Leyland from 1968 to 1983.
1983 marked the end of the Series Land Rover and, from that point on, the vehicle would be known as the Defender and marketed under the Land Rover name. The Defender as we knew it in 1983 was produced until 2016 when, after a total of 67 years in continuous production, the Defender was discontinued. In the U.S. Market, however, you couldn’t buy a new defender after 1997 as it couldn’t keep up with safety regulations at the time. For 2020, Land Rover (or Jaguar Land Rover, rather) introduced an all-new Defender that isn’t quite as boxy as the model it replaced but holds true to the tradition of a true, go-anywhere SUV.
The 2020 Land Rover Defender starts at nearly $51,000 in base form and can cruise to north of $100,000 for higher trim level models with added accessories. At the time of launch, the new defender is offered in 90 and 110 form (in regard to its wheelbase) and with four different engines depending on the market. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder will deliver between 200 and 240 horsepower while a six-cylinder is offered with up to 400 horsepower thanks to a mild-hybrid system that provides a little extra power and better fuel economy. A plug-in hybrid and larger 130-wheelbase model is expected to hit the market at some point, but as of 2020, there’s no official word on either model.
