The iconic SUV returns to the United States after 22 years!

The 2020 Land Rover Defender is a brand-new SUV that revives a nameplate that the British firm discontinued in 2016. But not only it marks the Defender’s return after three years, it also marks the nameplate’s return to the U.S. market after 22 years. The 2020 Defender is a familiar sight thanks to its boxy design, but that’s the only feature that reminds of its predecessor. Underneath, the 2020 Defender sports a modern, all-aluminum monocoque architecture and, for the first time, it comes with a mild hybrid drivetrain.

The 2020 Defender also comes into dealerships with a complete engine lineup that includes both gasoline and diesel powerplants. However, the oil burners aren’t available in the United States. The 2020 Defender remains as versatile as its predecessor with various interior layouts available. You can order it as a classic five seater, but you can also opt for a front jump seat and turn it into a six seater. Two addition third-row seats are also available, so the Defender can also become a seven- or eight-seat SUV. What else is new and how does it compare with the iconic Jeep Wrangler and Mercedes-Benz G-Class? Let’s find out in the detailed review below.

How Does The New Defender Square Up Against Its Predecessor?

How Does The New Defender Square Up Against Its Predecessor?

Other than their impressive off-road capabilities, almost everything is different between the old and the new Defenders

Following a continuous production run for 67 years, the Defender was discontinued in 2016 due to rising irrelevance and the costly EU emission standards. However, in 2020, Jaguar Land Rover released a new generation that differs significantly from the previous model. The main highlights include the platform it is based on, the overall design, and hybrid powertrain alternatives. The previous generations were also reputed for their spartan cabins and lack of technology. The new Defender adequately embraces technology and gets a new range of modern petrol and diesel engines from across the available range. Both the past and present Defenders were made to be off-roading SUVs, but there is no harm in comparing attributes to see where each excels better than the other.

The new Defender gets into a tug of war against two old Defenders; one of them converted to an EV

Land Rover introduced the new Defender two years ago around this time. But, how does it compare to its predecessors in terms of pure strength? Mat Watson from Carwow decided to find the answer by pitting it against two yesteryear Land Rover Defenders in a tug of war. While one of them featured a diesel mill, the other was an electrified version. Which SUV do you think has the edge?

The Hue 166 nameplate harks back to 1948 and this new one by Himalaya is a modern interpretation of that vintage SUV

The term "Sleeper" is being used all over the place. As far as SUVs go, the Land Rover Defender has been the talk of talks in recent times. That is a big achievement, given the variety of SUVs. Not to mention the crazy demand. We already know that, for 2022, the Defender will get a 5.0-liter V-8 engine with 525 horsepower (391 kilowatts) and 461 pound-feet (625 Nm). It also comes with new special models and trims, tech upgrades, and exterior enhancements

Land Rover resurrected the Defender moniker in a brand new avatar in 2019 after a three-year hiatus. It didn’t look as rugged and boxy as its predecessor, but it came loaded to the brim in terms of features and gizmos. Although it had everything that one would want from a premium off-roader, there was one glaring omission – the V-8 engine. Perhaps Land Rover was just testing waters when it launched the new Defender and wanted to keep something for later, or realized that the market is too competitive.

Either way, the good news is that the 2022 Defender has been introduced with eight-cylinders under the hood. Apart from this, it also comes with a few other tweaks here and there that have smoothened out some wrinkles.

2020 Land Rover Defender - Driven

An SUV with a premium interior, powerful engine, and numerous gizmos that make off-roading a walk in the park

The Land Rover Defender needs no introduction. After a long run, the company sent it on a hiatus in 2016, only for it to return in a freshed, modern avatar to keep up with the competition. It came out looking a little less old-school, but still as rugged as ever.

This time, it wasn’t just the sturdy build that made it a compelling off-roader, but also the modern gadgets and gizmos that could put the other off-roaders out there to shame. The top trim is dangerously close to the six-digit price territory, but will that stop people from buying it? Or will customers look at other cheaper alternatives, like the Toyota 4Runner and to an extent, the Jeep Grand Cherokee?

How can you go wrong with a Corvette-powered Defender?

Land Rover redefined the way off-roaders are perceived. The automaker brought class and finesse to many off-roaders and launched many monikers that are fondly remembered even today. The Defender is one of them. The badge came to life in the 1980s, before which it was known as the Land Rover Ninety and One Ten. The automaker pulled the plug on it in 2016, but brought it back again last year. In 2018, Land Rover rolled out a special edition of the Defender called the Defender Works V-8.

A lot of aftermarket companies have customized it over the years, but one company called ECD Automotive Design has taken a special liking towards it. These Are Cool, Surprising, Almost Strange and Bizarre Facts About The New Land Rover Defender

I am in love with the new Land Rover Defender. But at first, I was not. I was disappointed with its move towards an unibody chassis, and I have resented all the "soft-touches" Land Rover prepped for it. But I have changed my mind.

True, it is a mommy automobile, and a kids-to-school mover, but it is the best mommy automobile and kids transportation device I have ever seen. It’s tough, robust, well-engineered, rugged, and seriously capable. Plus, Land Rover offers it with 170 accessories, like roof racks, tow hitches, steel wheels, a rinse system, an armrest cooler, and a front bench-style seat. Find me another car that offers all of that. There’s no way you can. But!

There is a big "but" here. The 2020 Land Rover Defender is seriously expensive. It starts at $50,925 (plus destination charges) in the U.S. That’s huge. That is the price of the base BMW X4 xDrive30i. Take a deep dive in the configurator and you can spec it out at more than 100 grand. That is absurd.

In 2012, the Land Rover Defender started at $22,000 in Australia. Then again, the only thing that’s left from the old Defender on the new one is the name. Nothing else. This is a wholly new car. I only hope that Land Rover invested heavily in quality control. If it manages to ace reliability and dependability surveys with the new Defender, I’d say that the price may even be justified.

Here are several cool quirks and features that set this Defender apart from any other car in the world.

Land Rover Is Working On Some Seriously Pointless Tech

Land Rover Wants You To Off-Road Via Remote Control

Part of the beauty of owning a vehicle like the Jeep Wrangler, Ford F-150 Raptor, Toyota 4Runner, or even the new Land Rover Defender is the ability to play off-road. By that, we mean hitting rough terrain, climbing over obstacles, and going places cars like the Porsche 911 or Aston Martin DBS Superleggera can’t go. Doing this, however, requires a certain amount of driver skill – your everyday driver doesn’t just know how to approach and climb over rocky terrain or climb excessive steep grades. But, that’s part of the fun of off-roading; you learn how to approach different obstacles and enjoy the challenge. Now, however, it looks like a company known for its off-roading prowess, Land Rover, has lost touch with that entire concept as it works to developer remote control technology for the 2020 Defender.

Here’s Why The Land Rover Defender Won’t Have a Manual Transmission

The 2020 Land Rover Defender is finally here after what seemed like a lifetime of waiting. While it was well-received, for the most part, there are a couple of things that has rubbed everyone the wrong way. The first “issue” is that the new Defender won’t be offered in a pickup truck guise, despite its history as a pickup in various markets around the world. One could argue that, with the popularity of pickups as daily drivers and family vehicles, a Defender pickup could prosper. But, Land Rover says no way. So, what’s the other big letdown? Well, despite the fact that the original defender was available on the market from 1948 to 2016 as a manual (there wasn’t even the option for an automatic, by the way), Land Rover is choosing to offer this generation with an automatic transmission only – no hope for three pedals and no hope in you changing Land Rovers Mind. The reason why this is the case, however, falls on you and the government….

2020 Land Rover Defender looks a lot like the 2011 Land Rover DC100 concept

But the concept was ill-received, so Land Rover operated some important changes to its formula

Land Rover announced that it was working on an all-new Defender way back in 2011, when it revealed the DC100 concept. At the time, the design study made many traditional fans of the Defender exclaim that it didn’t preview a vehicle they’d be interested in buying, so Land Rover actually made a second concept in 2016, called LR1, but it didn’t show it to the public - it was an evolution of the DC100 and it actually was the basis for the recently unveiled production Defender.

At $170,000, Would You Buy Arkonik’s So-Cal 1989 Defender 90?

We would

As the new 2020 Land Rover Defender is rapidly heading towards its debut, we can’t help but look back at the Defenders of old. With the new one already promising a lot of high-tech gear and all the whatnot that will make life easier for modern drivers once they run out of asphalt, we cannot think at what would happen with all those rusty Defenders retired in barns or simply left to bear the mark of time in God knows what junkyard. Land Rover’s thinking about that too, in case you missed the news. The company is now offering a set of packages and upgrades through its Classic arm. They’re inspired by the Defender Works V8 70th Edition and give owners a chance to breathe new (also fancy) life into their beloved Defenders. But that’s not the reason we brought you here. In fact, we think there’s a better alternative to look after your Defender: getting it to a restomodding specialist and let the experts work their magic.

Not often do we come across such elegantly customized trucks

Land Rover Defender is not a new name. The off-road compact SUV came to life with this moniker in the 1980s, before which it was known as the Land Rover Ninety and Land Rover One Ten. This vehicle went off the production line in 2016, but such was the craze that the automaker had to cave into the customers’ demands, so it rolled out a special edition of the Defender called the Defender Works V-8 in 2018. The Defender, as is with any off-road truck, has been at the mercy of its owners and we have seen many customized versions of the same. But this one particular company called ECD Automotive Design specializes in customizing Defenders. It recently experimented with a customer Defender 130 and the results have made our day.

Now, the latter, on the one hand, has recently been part of a year-long hype because Land Rover is gearing up to reveal its reinterpreted 2020 Defender. Pre-production tests are nearing an end and with a bit of luck, we’ll be seeing the new Defender in a couple of months. That aside, here’s one for you: what will happen to the old Defenders out there? Well, some of them will still be left to rust on back alleys but those owned by sane enthusiasts get another chance at greatness thanks to a rather unexpected move from Land Rover Classic. By move, we really mean the release of a handful of packages that upgrade older Defenders and build on their genuine charm.

The LEGO Technic Land Rover Defender is scheduled to come out in October, one month after the actual 2020 Defender debuts, presumably at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show.

All-new Land Rover Defender helped protect elephants in Kenya for testing purposes

Production of the all-new 2020 Land Rover Defender is reportedly ramping up at the company’s plant in Nitra, Slovakia. We’re still a few months away from seeing the finished product, though, and many details surrounding it are still not very clear.

We have had our best look at it so far, courtesy of an official video (and photo gallery) that highlighted the fact that pre-production prototype Defenders were actually used by park rangers in Kenya. The video is meant to evoke the Defender’s outdoorsy spirit and its capability in the toughest conditions in the world, but what we were more interested in was to get a better glimpse of of the car itself - and we did, even though the video doesn’t really have any clear closeups of the car.

The new Land Rover Defender is officially coming to America, folks

If you just glance over Land Rover Defender history, you’ll see that the Defender hit the market in 1983 and stayed there, only taking on mild changes, until 2016. However, if you look a little deeper, you’ll realize that the Defender actually traces its roots back to 1948 when the first Series Land Rover made its debut at the Amsterdam Motor Show in April of that year. These defenders that were, oddly, quite similar to the model from the 80s, 90s, and 2000s (with a retro vibe to them, of course) but they were actually built by the Rover Company from 1948 to 1967 and then by British Leyland from 1968 to 1983.

1983 marked the end of the Series Land Rover and, from that point on, the vehicle would be known as the Defender and marketed under the Land Rover name. The Defender as we knew it in 1983 was produced until 2016 when, after a total of 67 years in continuous production, the Defender was discontinued. In the U.S. Market, however, you couldn’t buy a new defender after 1997 as it couldn’t keep up with safety regulations at the time. For 2020, Land Rover (or Jaguar Land Rover, rather) introduced an all-new Defender that isn’t quite as boxy as the model it replaced but holds true to the tradition of a true, go-anywhere SUV.

The 2020 Land Rover Defender starts at nearly $51,000 in base form and can cruise to north of $100,000 for higher trim level models with added accessories. At the time of launch, the new defender is offered in 90 and 110 form (in regard to its wheelbase) and with four different engines depending on the market. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder will deliver between 200 and 240 horsepower while a six-cylinder is offered with up to 400 horsepower thanks to a mild-hybrid system that provides a little extra power and better fuel economy. A plug-in hybrid and larger 130-wheelbase model is expected to hit the market at some point, but as of 2020, there’s no official word on either model.
