The Golf Mk8 is an amazing hatchback with loads of tech, but is it too expensive for the segment?
The 2020 Volkswagen Golf is the eighth-generation of the iconic hatchback. Unveiled in Wolfsburg, Germany, the company’s home town, the 2020 Golf Mk8 shares the same MQB platform as the third-generation Audi A3 and Seat Leon. An evolutionary design on the outside, the 2020 Golf looks similar to its predecessor but employs more angular styling features similar to larger Volkswagen cars and SUVs. The interior is a notable departure from the old car and sports a more upscale design and fresh technology. Under the hood, the 2020 Golf continues to offer gasoline and diesel engines, but Volkswagen started using 48-volt systems and now offers a higher performance hybrid.
Arguably the most advanced vehicle in its class, the 2020 comes with a major drawback: it will be notably more expensive than the competition. Actually, there’s a good chance that the 2020 Golf will be only marginally cheaper than the Audi A3 Sportback, which could become a serious issue for the German automaker. What’s more, the 2020 Golf won’t be sold in the U.S. in base trim, as Volkswagen confirmed that only the GTI and R models will cross the pond to North America.

2021 Volkswagen GTI BBS Concept
The Volkswagen Golf GTI is a hot hatch and has been around the block for quite some time now. Although the company is gearing up for the 2022 Golf GTI, it has decided to look back and pay homage to the yesteryear Golf model – the 1984 GTI, to be specific – by fusing it with the latest generation. Volkswagen has teamed up with Philadelphia-based VW enthusiast Jamie Orr and created a concept that combines the best of the present and the past.
Volkswagen noted that the inspiration for this concept was an enthusiast-built Mk2 version of the GTI, which supplanted the only U.S.-built generation of the GTI in 1984. The goal was to highlight what has made the GTI special through the years.
The car retains the same stock drivetrain and as it is the most powerful Golf GTI ever. Even the interior was left as it is. For the retro touches on the exterior, Orr and his team decided to swap the wheels with a set of 19-inch BBS Super RS shoes that feature the iconic BBS waffle and hex pattern. They were shod in Delinte 235/35 D7 rubber.
The highlight, however, was the BBS retro red and black vintage livery with pinstriping running from all across the body. The car was even lowered, courtesy of H&R coilovers. The Borla exhaust from the Mk8 was retained as Orr was happy with it. Overall, this is a sweet build that mixes the retro touches on the new Golf GTI.

Volkswagen Golf R MK8 by ABT - Making the Competition Irrelevant
When Volkswagen revealed the Mk.8 Golf R, everyone was very impressed. The familiar 2.0-liter turbocharged four-banger was massaged to deliver 315 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque – a nice improvement of 27 horsepower and 30 pound-feet over the MK.7 Golf R. On top of this new Golf R brought the future with it thanks to some awesome high-end tech like that cool all-digital dashboard. In the end, the Golf became a formidable competitor for cars like the Honda Civic Type R, beating it out in almost every category except top speed, which it lost by 2 mph (167 mph vs. 169 when the Golf was equipped with the performance package.) But, what if this kind of performance isn’t enough? Wait, who am I kidding? This is TopSpeed, and it’s never enough. Well, I suppose it’s a good thing that ABT has our back, and even thought what I’m about to tell you is going to sound pretty awesome, it’s going to get better in the future too!

A New Volkswagen Golf GTI Is Coming with 287 Horsepower
With the Volkswagen Golf 8 here to stay for a while, it was only a matter of time before Volkswagen started declining it into various guises. Hotter guises, that is.
Among those, the first one to make a debut is, according to a recent report coming from Autocar, the Golf GTI. It will be followed by the GTD, which will supposedly share the stage too in Geneva, and later on (read summer 2020) by the Golf R.
2019 Volkswagen Golf GTi - Driven
We have been itching to get behind the wheel of the 2020 Volkswagen Golf Mk. 8 and would really love to try out the yet-to-be-released Mk. 8 Golf GTi, but we’ve been told we still have to wait a while. To make things good, however, and hold us over, Volkswagen decided to send out an MK. 7 2019 Golf GTi and, while it wasn’t exactly what we wanted, we have to admit that the week we spent with it was beyond memorable.
As you can see from the photo gallery organized into the slider above and the page below, the Golf GTi, even in its older design, is quite the looker. It’s attractive from all angles, and the interior really gives you the feeling that you’re sitting in a proper hot hatch. The flat-bottom steering wheel and eight-inch infotainment displayed helped in the regard, but the overall fitment of the seats and materials put together one hell of a package.
The 2.0-liter turbo-four under the hood isn’t the most powerful four-cylinder on the block – the title is reserved for the Mercedes-AMG A45S – but it’s powerful enough to keep just about any enthusiast happy at 228 ponies and 258 pound-feet of torque. Volkswagen claims that’s good for a 5.7-second sprint to 60 mph, but we actually got there around one-tenth faster. More impressive than that is the fact that this baby is as nimble as can be. The 35.8-foot turning circle means it can turn on a dime (this is much better than both the Focus ST and i30 N that it competes with) while the 5.1-inch ride height feels like the sweet spot in terms of dealing with typical road conditions.

A video on YouTube has appeared wherein the admin of CarHax decided to use ‘weapons of destruction’ on a standard Volkswagen Golf’s glass. You will be shocked to see how much abuse it can withstand.

If you want an eighth-generation, 2020 Volkswagen Golf, you have no choice but to get one with four doors plus a hatch. Just like the brand did with the Polo, it’s nixing the potential of a three-door golf hatch because the body style just didn’t sell well. It’s not surprising considering how hard it was to get into the rear of a three-door, but it’s still a damn shame. Fortunately, independent artist Aksyonov Nikita posted his latest work on Behance to show us just what a three-door MK. 8 Golf would actually look like. It certainly reminds us of simpler times, and it makes the itch for a three-door Mk. 8 Golf come stronger than ever.
2020 Volkswagen Golf
The 2020 Volkswagen Golf is the eighth-generation of the iconic hatchback. Unveiled in Wolfsburg, Germany, the company’s home town, the 2020 Golf Mk8 shares the same MQB platform as the third-generation Audi A3 and Seat Leon. An evolutionary design on the outside, the 2020 Golf looks similar to its predecessor but employs more angular styling features similar to larger Volkswagen cars and SUVs. The interior is a notable departure from the old car and sports a more upscale design and fresh technology. Under the hood, the 2020 Golf continues to offer gasoline and diesel engines, but Volkswagen started using 48-volt systems and now offers a higher performance hybrid.
Arguably the most advanced vehicle in its class, the 2020 comes with a major drawback: it will be notably more expensive than the competition. Actually, there’s a good chance that the 2020 Golf will be only marginally cheaper than the Audi A3 Sportback, which could become a serious issue for the German automaker. What’s more, the 2020 Golf won’t be sold in the U.S. in base trim, as Volkswagen confirmed that only the GTI and R models will cross the pond to North America.
With the 2020 Volkswagen Golf GTE rated at 242 horsepower, is there a future for the GTI?
Volkswagen just launched 2020 Golf Mk8, and by far, the biggest surprise is a hybrid GTE model that cranks out 242 horsepower. That’s more than the outgoing Golf GTI, rated at 227 horsepower in standard form and 242 horses with the Performance Pack. Volkswagen just finished debuting the new 2020 Volkswagen Golf MK. 8, and it takes the Golf into unchartered territory with mild hybrid technology, car-to-x connectivity, a mildly revised look, and engines that are more efficient than ever. Even better yet, at launch, the Golf Mk. 8 will be available as a plug-in hybrid with a 13 kWh battery that will give you some 60 km (about 37 miles) of all-electric range. The interior of the Golf has been completely revamped as well with an all-new focus on digital controls, and, to be quite honest, it feels like the Golf just surpassed Audi in a big way. How to Watch the 2020 Volkswagen Golf Mk 8 Debut
The eighth-generation, Mk. 8 Volkswagen Golf debuts later today at 12:30 pm EST, 4:30 pm GMT, or 6:30 PM CEST and with it will come the normal VW evolution that we’ve experienced with previous iterations of the Golf. Thanks to some leaked images, we already know what the 2020 Golf will look like inside and out, and we can now comfortably say that the interior is a huge departure from the seventh-gen model and does effectively move the Golf a little further upmarket than it is right now. The 2020 Golf should go on sale within the next six months, so go ahead and kick back, press play on the stream below, and watch the all-new (at least on the inside) Golf make its grand debut. Oh, and by the way, there’s still the potential for this thing to be offered as a mild hybrid, so the next-gen Golf GTI and Golf R could be off the chain baby.

The eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf is about to break cover at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, and as it usually happens, we get to see it earlier than we should thanks to a batch of leaked photos. The images confirm what we already saw in spy shots: that the 2020 Golf Mk8 is an evolution of the outgoing generation in terms of styling. It remains about the same, yet it looks modern and fresh, and it’s ready to lead the market for a few more years.

2020 Volkswagen Golf 8 GTE
With Dieselgate still not just an ugly distant memory in the back of Volkswagen’s brain, Wolfsburg looks like it’s leading the electrification revolution in the car world, driven by the traction offered by the behemoth that is the Volkswagen Group. But Volkswagen, as a brand, irrespective of what its other sisters and brothers are doing, has become synonymous with electrification plans of all sorts.
This so-called offensive will ultimately rub off on VW’s future models. TheID.3 is already out of the bag, but for now, the company is busy at work preparing the new Golf 8 for debut. When that finally happens on October the 24th, the new Golf will also come as a mild-hybrid model, the first in its history, as well as in the shape of conventionally-powered versions (i.e., diesel and gasoline variants). What’s more, the VW Golf will also receive a plug-in hybrid iteration under the GTE moniker, but no e-Golf model - since the ID.3 is already here to cover the all-electric ground. So with the e-Golf out of the scene, we’ll focus on the new VW Golf 8 GTE, which was caught during pre-production tests by our spy photographers.
Can the Audi SQ2 and Cupra Ateca Performance SUVs Keep Up With the Volkswagen Golf R and Mercedes-AMG A35 Hatchbacks?
Performance crossovers and hot hatches make for an odd match, especially when you line them up side-by-side in a race. That, of course, didn’t stop Top Gear from trying to find out if the Volkswagen Golf R and the Mercedes-AMG A 35 can beat the Audi SQ2 and the Cupra Ateca in a drag race. While the disparity in size is evident between the two crossovers and the two hot hatches, all four use a similarly sized 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, including three that use the same engine that produces the same output. This makes for a compelling race that unfolded in a rather unexpected way.
The Volkswagen Golf R Has Been Cancelled but For How Long?
The Volkswagen Golf R, the range-topping version of the seventh-generation hatchback, has been discontinued for the 2020 model year. The high-performance five-door will return with the Mk8 version of the Volkswagen Golf. The R version was discontinued alongside the SportWagen and Alltrack models, but the standard Golf, the e-Golf, and the GTI carry over for 2020.
