Best SUVs Under $20,000
One of the most difficult questions to answer in the auto industry these days doesn’t involve supercars, luxury cars, or even premium cars. It involves crossovers and SUVs, specifically the question of which is the best of its kind among those priced at a certain cost point. In this case, our cost point is $20,000, which means that a lot of today’s compact crossovers are involved in this difficult, if not impossible, discussion. And like every question posed in this business, answers vary depending on who you ask. In our case, ask us which are the best SUVs under $20,000, and these are our answers.
The Departed: 10 Cars That Have Been Discontinued For 2018
2017 has been an eventful year for the auto industry. It’s also been a devastating one for some models, particularly those that were effectively told by their automakers that they’re discontinuing them. Cars come and go in this ever-evolving industry and, this year, a few notable models are, in fact, getting sent to retirement. There’s a chance that we may see them again in the future, but as far as the short-term is concerned, it’s time to say goodbye to them.
So ahead of their eventual discontinuation, we’re giving them one last moment in the spotlight. Consider it a tribute to these models, some of whom have etched an inscrutable legacy in the auto industry. They may have been popular makes at one point in the past, but with consumer tastes changing, they’ve become expendable in the eyes of their automakers. So say goodbye to these four-wheeled machines; each of them had good runs. But time is unforgiving; it marches on with no conscience of who, or what, it leaves behind. Those who can’t keep up will inevitably become remnants of a time gone by.

Jeep’s Mike Manley Spills News on Compass, Patriot Replacement
Jeep Brand CEO Mike Manley recently divulged details regarding several of Jeep’s upcoming models, including the long-overdue replacement for the Compass and Patriot compact SUVs, known internally within Jeep as the C-SUV.
Speaking with Automotive News, Manley said the yet-unnamed crossover will debut in late September in Brazil, followed by a U.S. launch in November at the LA Auto Show. The small crossover will retain either the Compass or Patriot names and arrive in showrooms early within 2017. The Brazil debut was chosen to help celebrate FCA’s new Pernambuco assembly plant. The facility will also build the Renegade for Latin American counties.
Manley then divulged engineering news regarding the C-SUV’s structure. He says the new crossover will share the Renegade’s chassis, its FWD-based drivetrain, and the disconnecting rear axle on 4WD units. Engine choices are still unknown. Manley also revealed U.S.-spec versions will be built in Toluca, Mexico. This is a departure from the Compass’ current birthplace in Belvidere, Illinois – perhaps allowing Jeep to build the upcoming Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer SUVs.
Speaking of those, Manley mentioned the pair shouldn’t be thought of as separate vehicles, but rather a trim levels. This is counter to many reports suggesting the Grand Wagoneer would be lager than its less-luxurious brother.
The iconic Wrangler was also mentioned, with Manley saying, “To be honest with you, I’m delighted in the way it’s turning out, not just from a styling point of view, but from an overall point of what Wrangler stands for, I’m very pleased.” Manley admitted large changes are coming to the Wrangler in terms of fuel economy, weight, and aerodynamics. Thankfully he reassured Wrangler loyalists, saying, “…at the end of the day, it needs to be recognized as Wrangler.”

The modern automobile is a marvel of convenience and engineering, and thanks to rapid technological advances over the past decade, the average new car is safer than ever before. However, traffic accidents still claim roughly 35,000 lives every year in the U.S., and in response, safety standards are becoming stricter. That means some models just don’t make the grade, whether it’s due to outdated design, cost-cutting measures, or just plain old physics.
Thankfully, consumers can look to organizations like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for guidance, and as safety tech marches forward, the evaluative bodies are looking to keep pace. The NHTSA, for example, recently proposed an update to its safety rating system, including a new type of crash test, crash dummies that are more “human-like,” an assessment of equipped crash-avoidance technologies (like automatic braking), and an assessment of safeguards for pedestrians.
To determine the worst safety picks for 2016, I took into account scores from both the NHTSA and the IIHS. Only mass-produced cars released in the last 12 months under the 2016 model year were considered. I also looked at model history and death rate per number of registered vehicles.

Jeep apparently has plans on consolidating is small crossover lineup as the Compass and Patriot reach the end of their life cycles. In fact, rumor has it the two vehicles will be replaced with a single crossover Jeep is currently calling the Compatriot. Nope, this is no April Fools.
The obvious meshing of the Compass and Patriot names produces a word which is defined as, “a fellow citizen or national of a country.” Seems fitting for a brand dripping with Americana.
Regardless of its name, the Compatriot news comes directly from Jeep’s director, Jim Morrison. In an interview with Car Advice, Morrison says the new model will fill the gap between the new 2015 Renegade and the larger Cherokee. This brings the number of Jeeps vehicles down by one, yet will assuredly offer higher levels of quality and refinement over the outgoing pair.
The new model is still some time away, as Morrison sheepishly admitted in the interview Jeep won’t likely be ready to announce the product until 2016 before its 2017 debut at dealerships.

The 2014 Patriot includes plenty of updates over the 2013 model, including a new transmission and a new Freedom Edition for those looking for some extra features.
What better time to announce updates to the patriotically named Jeep than the Fourth of July weekend. This little model has plenty of Jeep image and even some of the capability of its bigger brothers via the available four-wheel-drive systems. Its boxy looks also house a roomy and versatile interior with fold-down seats and a wide tailgate.
The Patriot was the first to map out the mini crossover segment that is now exploding with new entries. The Hyundai Tucson, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and the Subaru XV Crosstrek all compete for the same buyers.
Despite the low base prices, most of the volume for the Jeep Patriot comes from the better-equipped four-wheel-drive automatic models. How does little Jeep perform as both a lifestyle economy car and a light off-roader versus these rivals?

With America celebrating Veterans Day over the weekend, Jeep decided to release a model dedicated to the U.S. military members by unveiling a special edition Patriot, dubbed the Freedom Edition. The model is priced at $21,445 and Jeep will donate $250 from each unit it sells to charities that benefit U.S. Military members.
This special edition is based on the 2013 Patriot Latitude and is available in two- or four-wheel-drive configurations. It is distinguished by a military-inspired star on the hood and the rear quarter panel, a bright lower front fascia and an "Oscar Mike" (military jargon for "on the move") badge on the lower part of the front door. It sits on a set of 17-inch high-gloss Mineral-Gray-painted aluminum wheels with bright lug nuts. Customers will have the possibility to choose between three exterior colors: Deep Cherry Red crystal pearl coat, Bright White clear coat or True Blue pearl coat. Also, as a unique feature for this model, Jeep is offering a Dark Gray "Cubic" cloth interior with vinyl bolsters and silver accent stitching, plus a black fabric "star" logo patch on the front seats.
As standard equipment the new Patriot Freedom Edition will offer a sunroof, Security and Cargo Group, all-season floor mats, and on four-wheel-drive models it gerts the All-weather Capability Group.
The third model in Jeep’s new Altitude series is based on the Patriot. Like the other two models - Compass Altitude and Grand Cherokee Altitude, the new Patriot Altitude will go on sale this May and it will be priced from $20,240 for 4x2 models and $23,275 for 4x4 models.
The new Patriot Altitude continues the same black theme of the other two models, but features more chrome and polished steel used for the lower fascia and rear step pad appliques, and the roof rails. The car rides on 17" high-gloss black aluminum wheels wrapped in Firestone BSW all-season touring tires.
The list of standard equipments includes: power heated exterior mirrors and heated seats, power windows (driver one-touch) and locks, continuously variable automatic transaxle, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, and includes numerous safety and security features, such as electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, Hill-start Assist (with manual transmission), and side-curtain air bags that cover all rows.
In 2011, Jeep is turning 70 years old, which means that we’re going to be seeing a year-long celebration from these guys consisting of parties, promotions, and special edition vehicles.
Well, it didn’t take long for them to cross one off of their list. At the Detroit Auto Show, Jeep rolled out five special edition models for the Compass, Grand Cherokee, Liberty, Patriot, and Wrangler SUVs. Despite the special edition labels attached to them, the five anniversary models don’t come with a lot of exterior and performance upgrades with Jeep focusing instead on the SUVs’ interior. Not that we’re complaining or anything because those interior upgrades look mighty nice as far as we’re concerned.
The cheapest option of the five models will be the Patriot 70th Anniversary Edition, which has been priced at $22,870. It’s a far cry from the line-up topping Grand Cherokee, which comes at $36,495, but if anyone is looking for a special edition 70th Anniversary Jeep that comes at an affordable price, the Patriot version is the best option available.
Details for the Jeep Patriot 70th Anniversary Edition can be found after the jump.
The Jeep Patriot will be seeing a little of a facelift for 2011 with some new exterior styling, interior upgrades, and a few new technologies. Anyone who is interested will be able to catch the three different Patriot configurations - Sport, Latitude, and Latitude X - when the Patriot hits Jeep showrooms towards the end of 2010.
With the mini facelift comes a new front fascia with aggressive styling, standard fog lamps positioned inside the headlamps, a new lower rear fascia, a body-color grille, new 17in. wheels, four new colors, and a 4x4 ride height that has been increased by one inch. Okay, so maybe "mini" isn’t really the most accurate description.
Along with the plethora of exterior changes, the interior of the Jeep Patriot will also be getting some attention with new soft touch front-door trim panels with a padded upper surface, a new center armrest, new cloth interior with premium cloth bucket seats in the front, standard speed control on all models, new backlighting of door switches, door locks, windows and power mirror controls, and standard automatic temperature control on the Latitude X model. The steering has also seen a facelift with integrated controls that allow the driver to operate the radio, cruise control, handsfree phone, and other vehicle functions while keeping their hands on the wheel
