With the pandemic still looming over our heads, 2021 was a pretty action-packed year for the auto industry. Sure, you had challenges, with automakers having to contend with issues like chip shortages, causing delays to consumers. But regardless, the show had to go on and we got some pretty cool cars making their debut, predominantly towards the latter half of 2021.

Let’s get one thing out of the way, 2021 really was also the year, when the market as a whole began to embrace EV’s and you could see several automakers both the legacy as well as EV startups bring several new models to market. Having said that, we did see some pretty cool ICE cars, also make their debut. Now there were several cars that made headlines this year, it was very difficult to pick out the best ones, but the cars on this list definitely stood out. Here’s our list of some of the most highly anticipated and important cars that were unveiled in 2021.

This time, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk has the uneasy task of defending its turf against the BMW X5 M Competition and Range Rover Sport SVR. All three SUVs are the top versions of their regular counterparts, but who is going to come out on top?

Land Rover just revealed the all-new Rang Rover with a new design that’s being coined as evolutionary, new more powerful engines, and luxury that some are saying is on par with that of Rolls-Royce and Bentley. That aside, the new Range Rover will launch in the U.S. with the option of two different engine choices – one hybridized and one BMW sourced. Looking ahead of a couple of years, you’ll find a Range Rover PHEV but beyond this Range Rover could do something very unexpected and it revolves around the first-ever electric Range Rover.

What’s touted as the world’s first luxury SUV has been around since 1970 and the current generation has been there for nine years now. As per today’s standards, most of us would say it’s been too long in the tooth. In fact, it even has new competitors now in the form of the Jeep Grand Wagoneer and the Lexus LX600.

But, the automaker has finally debuted the fifth-gen Land Rover Range Rover and it comes with some significant changes. It rides on a new platform, is offered with eight different engine options including two plug-in hybrids, and features a lot of new features on the inside.

Land Rover recently began teasing the new Range Rover in order to build public interest, but it seems a couple of Instagram users couldn’t contain their excitement for the British automaker’s upcoming flagship luxury SUV.

The Nürburgring has been quite busy with a lot of automakers testing new models, new generations, and facelifts on the track. Now, our spy photographers have spotted the next-gen Land Rover Range Rover making short work of the Nürburgring.

Land Rover is updating the Discovery family for the 2023 model year by adding a new trim version to the lineup. Called Metropolitan Edition, the new model will be built on the R-Dynamic HSE specification and will now sit on the top of the Discovery family. In the States, the model will be priced from $75,300 - quite an increase over the Discovery’s base price of $56,600, but is it worth it?

Following a continuous production run for 67 years, the Defender was discontinued in 2016 due to rising irrelevance and the costly EU emission standards. However, in 2020, Jaguar Land Rover released a new generation that differs significantly from the previous model. The main highlights include the platform it is based on, the overall design, and hybrid powertrain alternatives. The previous generations were also reputed for their spartan cabins and lack of technology. The new Defender adequately embraces technology and gets a new range of modern petrol and diesel engines from across the available range. Both the past and present Defenders were made to be off-roading SUVs, but there is no harm in comparing attributes to see where each excels better than the other.

Land Rover introduced the new Defender two years ago around this time. While it seemed rugged and strong on paper and turned out to be a rather sweet package, a lot of purists didn’t find the old-school charm in it anymore, which wasn’t wrong. But, how does it compare to its predecessors in terms of pure strength? Mat Watson from Carwow decided to find the answer by pitting it against two yesteryear Land Rover Defenders in a tug of war. While one of them featured a diesel mill, the other was an electrified version. Which SUV do you think has the edge?

What’s the first car that comes to mind when you hear "James Bond?" Aston Martin DB5 is for sure on the top list. In the "Goldfinger" movie it made a perfect team with Sean Connery. But, there are other cars too - maybe not as iconic - that are related to the famous movie. "No time to die" - the last iteration from the James Bond series - is set to premiere at the end of September, 2021. To celebrate its debut, Land Rover announced the special edition Defender V8 Bond Edition. It comes as no surprise, as the new Defender will be a star in "No time to die."

The term "Sleeper" is being used all over the place. An RS6, M5, or even E63 AMG with their large wheels, massive exhausts, "air" intakes, and wide bodywork, are cars that aren’t necessarily sleepers at all anymore. The Himalaya Hue 166, with its big 650 horsepower, V-8 engine based on the Land Rover Defender 110, and understated looks, aims to change that.

Land Rover has introduced a new flagship model of the Range Rover Sport called the SVR Ultimate Edition. It sits above the standard SVR in the hierarchy and is pricier than even the SVR Carbon Edition. The SUV comes with a whole lot of cosmetic upgrades that differentiate it from the other trims. As for the power, the SUV will come with a V-8 mill under the hood. Bookings are now open, but the automaker hasn’t announced when the deliveries will commence.

Netherlands-based Heritage Customs is known for its Land Rover Defender builds. The aftermarket company has created many bespoke editions of the yesteryear and the new Defender models. The company has again created a bespoke model for a TV celebrity, Winston Gerschtanowitz, based on the new Defender 110 called the Valiance.

As far as SUVs go, the Land Rover Defender has been the talk of talks in recent times. That is a big achievement, given the variety of SUVs. Not to mention the crazy demand. We already know that, for 2022, the Defender will get a 5.0-liter V-8 engine with 525 horsepower (391 kilowatts) and 461 pound-feet (625 Nm). We expect this to be the familiar from Jaguar 5.0-liter supercharged V-8. However, this will not be the top version for long, as something bigger is coming. This, of course, being the Defender SVR, which will reportedly put out in excess of 600 horsepower, from a BMW engine.

Land Rover set out to tell a story with its latest special edition – The Defender Trophy Edition. It’s designed specifically to pay tribute to the Defender’s long-standing expedition legacy. It’s inspired by the Land Rover Classic Defender Works V8 Trophy and is based on the 2022 Defender 110 P400 X-Dynamic SE (boy that’s a mouthful.) Production will be capped at 220 units, some of which will undoubtedly be equipped with the Extended Black Exterior Pack that you see on the model in these images.

As you’d expect from Land Rover, the Defender Trophy Edition comes standard will all kinds of extra all-terrain equipment including a roof rack, front under shield, deployable ladder, winch installation kit, air compressor, an deep-sided floormats. The list continues with a tow hitch receiver, ClearSight RearView, and Air Suspension. This limited edition will be available from August 2021, and will be priced at $90,000. If you’re in Europe, I’m sorry to break your heart, but this is a U.S. only affair.

There are high chances you would’ve heard of the name ‘Ineos’. It is a U.K.-based petrochemicals group. You must have even seen the name across the Mercedes F1 cars, America’s Cup team boats, and also ‘Ineos Grenadiers’, a cycling team previously known as Sky.

Now, Ineos has dipped its toes into the automotive segment and has come up with an SUV called Ineos Grenadier. The SUV is heavily inspired by the yesteryear Land Rover Defender. While it may look the part, is it as hardcore as the original model? Carfection finds out.

When an automaker is in turbulent times, sometimes all it takes is the right person to turn it all around. Take Jaguar and Land Rover for example – two companies that have been plagued by quality and reliability issues to the point that the whole world knows just how bad they really are. And I’m not even exaggerating, either. In What Car’s 2020 reliability survey, Land Rover landed dead last in position No. 31 with a score of 78.2-percent, or 10-percent less than Renault at 87.6-percent in position No. 30. Jaguar did a little better in position 21 with a score of 91.8-percent, but you get the idea – neither company is known for two things that matter the most. There was even a protest at JLR’s Shanghai headquarters in 2018 over poor performance. For 2021 and beyond, however, both brands could very well see a completely different fortune.

Since the mid-80s the Land Rover’s Defender’s name has stood for one of the most original and indestructible off-road vehicles in automotive history. Over the past 70 years, the model known solely by its brand name has only bee discreetly improved - until incompatibilities with pedestrian protection ultimately sealed its fate in early 2016.

The 20th century Land Rover Defenders are a hot commodity today. A lot of tuners and aftermarket companies undertake restomod operations and give the erstwhile model a modern twist. It came out with fresh skin, a new look, and even a new heart. Neat job, huh?
