You Don't Need Tons of Money To Own a Lamborghini Aventador - Just Get a 3D Printer

You Don’t Need Tons of Money To Own a Lamborghini Aventador - Just Get a 3D Printer

You also need to know what you’re doing, something this physicist seems to be on top off

What do you do when you want to own a Lamborghini Aventador, but you don’t have the money to go buy one? Some people will save up to buy one while others will probably just resign themselves to not getting a chance at it no matter what they do. Then there’s physicist Sterling Backus. Without the financial means to buy a supercar that starts at $330,000, Backus decided to build his own Aventador, using nothing more than spare parts, a few original parts, and a 3D printer. Backus started creating his 3D-printed Aventador — he calls it the AXAS Interceptor — and has so far invested $20,000 in the build. He and his son have been at it building the car for the past 18 months, working on it for at least one hour every day. Progress has been slow, but seeing how the car is coming together may make the long build worth it in the end. To think this whole idea to 3D print a Lamborghini Aventador came after a video game run of Forza Horizon 3.

2017 Lamborghini Terzo Millennio Concept

2017 Lamborghini Terzo Millennio Concept

This is the future of Lamborghini and it is...I don’t know what it is exactly

Just when you think that you have the auto industry all figured out, it still finds a way to make you question what you know. Very few automakers are as good at doing that as Lamborghini, and after bearing witness to the madness that is the Terzo Millennia Concept, I might as well just throw my hands up and admit defeat. I don’t know enough to know what Lamborghini knows because, if I did, I would’ve seen the Terzo Millennio Concept coming a while ago. But nothing prepares you for this kind of presentation, especially when the Italian automaker is involved. You just sit back, be amazed, and try not to piss yourself in the process.

The narrative surrounding the Terzo Millennio Concept is a pretty straightforward one. The concept is a joint creation by Lamborghini and some smart folks from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It was created to showcase the future of the Raging Bull, or rather, the possibilities of what can happen in automotive design and engineering when smart people work together for a common purpose. History hasn’t always been kind to this innovative bullishness, but if there’s one automaker that has proven to be adept at bringing state-of-the-art tech to life, no matter how ridiculous they may be, it’s Lamborghini. All that is why the Terzo Millennio Concept is so intriguing beyond the fact that it proudly wears the iconic Sant’Agata Bull badge. The concept may be defined by tech offerings that don’t exist yet, but that’s not to say they can’t happen, especially when Lamborghini’s involved.

An Autonomous Lamborghini? Forget About It!

An Autonomous Lamborghini? Forget About It!

Don’t expect one to arrive now, or in the near future

The concept of zigging when everyone else is zagging is nothing new in the auto industry. Trends are always a big pull in the business, after all, but there are times when not buckling to them is in the best interest of a particular automaker. Take Lamborghini for example. While most of the industry is moving along into adopting different forms of autonomous driving technology, the Raging Bull isn’t joining the party. Not now. Not anytime soon.

Speaking with Digital Trends, Maurizio Reggiani, Lamborghini’s head of research and development, said that the Italian automaker has no plans of introducing autonomous driving to any of its cars in the future. It’s worth noting that Lamborghini also took the same line of thinking when discussing electric cars a few months back. Part of the reason for resisting the urge to go autonomous or electric is that by doing so, the company would effectively rob its customers of the same core principles of driving that it has stood for since, well, it began offering cars. At its roots, Lamborghini is a company that prides itself on giving its customers the most visceral of driving experiences. An autonomous driving Lambo not only removes that experience away from the driver, but it also cuts off the legs of the very principles that it has prided itself on showcasing each and every time a new model comes into the picture. None of this is surprising. There are companies that can embrace autonomous driving and there are those that can’t, or won’t. Lamborghini falls into the latter category, where it should be in the first place.

Lamborghini's New Alpha-One Smartphone Is The Definition Of Unnecessary Excess

Lamborghini’s New Alpha-One Smartphone Is The Definition Of Unnecessary Excess

Would you spend $2,450 for a Lambo phone? I didn’t think so.

Part of what makes Lamborghini a premium brand is that it can slap its name on anything and that “thing” suddenly becomes a premium item. No more is this evident than on laptops and smartphones. Remember the Asus Lamborghini VX Series? How about the ZX1 smartphone? Now, the Raging Bull’s likeness will once again be stamped on a smartphone. This one is called “Alpha-One,” and it’s a waste of $2,450.

Now, I will indulge those who think a Lamborghini-branded smartphone is something worth splurging on. The Alpha-One, to its credit, isn’t a shill. It does have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, which is supposedly fast and does lots of cool things. It also has four gigabytes worth of RAM with expandable storage, a 20-megapixel rear camera, an eight-megapixel front camera, a fingerprint scanner, a 5.5-inch WQHD display, and an Android Nougat operating system. I’ll give it this much: it’s well-equipped, which is more than what other faux mobile phone brands can say for themselves. Take it a step further and you might even be impressed by its supposed liquid metal frame and Italian handmade black leather back case, which by the way, has its own contrast stitching. On the surface, everything about it checks out as a premium smartphone, and that’s precisely what it’s problem is. As well-equipped as it is, there’s no way that the Alpha-One should cost $2,450, roughly double the price of the most powerful version of the iPhone that’s out in the market today. Then again, that’s the price people will have to pay for it, all because it has “Lamborghini” logo.

Does A Carbon Fiber Body Limb Sound Like A Good Idea?

Does A Carbon Fiber Body Limb Sound Like A Good Idea?

Lamborghini seems to think so

There’s no doubt Lamborghini is a pioneer in the use of carbon fiber technology. In a lot of ways, the Raging Bull can be considered as the godfather of carbon fiber. That status, coupled with the responsibility of venturing into new frontiers, is spurring Lambo to take its knowledge of carbon fiber to other industries. If everything goes as planned, we could one day see carbon fiber become the material of choice among prosthetic implants and subcutaneous devices in the medical industry.

It sounds a little too far out of reach at this point, but we learned a long time ago to never doubt Lamborghini in matters related to carbon fiber. The automaker even opened the Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory in Seattle, Washington last year to spearhead the development of new applications that can be traced back to carbon fiber. This time, it’s partnering with the Houston Methodist Research Institute to create new forms and iterations of carbon fiber that can serve as better materials than the ones being used in the medicinal industry today. Ultimately, the objective is to create prosthetics that are lighter, more durable, and tolerated better by the human body. Whether that goal is reached isn’t known yet, but if there’s one company that can see it to its completion, it’s Lamborghini. Give the company some time to research and develop this possibility and you can be sure that it’s going to yield some results.

Lamborghini and MIT Partner Up to Develop New, Lighter Materials

Lamborghini and MIT Partner Up to Develop New, Lighter Materials

Italian automaker is eyeing more innovation with the help of some brilliant young minds

Lamborghini hasn’t been shy about reminding everyone that it’s one of the pioneers in using carbon fiber technology in the auto industry. It’s a badge of honor that the Italian automaker proudly wears to this day, but like any forward-thinking company, Lambo isn’t content with simply basking in its achievements. It’s setting its sights on discovering the next breakthrough in the business, and for this task, Lamborghini is collaborating with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, considered as one the best private research universities in the world.

The collaboration between Lambo and MIT largely revolves around creating new materials that can be adopted for use in future vehicles. It’s largely similar to the undertaking the company embarked on when it pioneered carbon fiber technology, except that this time, it’s got some of the brightest young engineers from MIT helping out. Together, engineers from Lambo will work closely with their counterparts from MIT to develop new and lighter materials that will allow the automaker to stay a step ahead in the high-stakes race to innovation that the exotic car market is known for.

No specific details were mentioned on what the partnership will constitute other than what has been mentioned. That said, Lamborghini could be working with MIT to determine how to expand the use of carbon fiber past what it’s already capable of doing by itself. There have been past reports that the the automaker is trying to figure out a method that would allow it to put carbon fiber into the engine, thus making it lighter and stronger than what it is today.

It’s an interesting proposition and having engineers from MIT help out could pave the way for Lamborghini to knock on yet another door that leads to a new innovation that has the potential to shake up the industry. Could this partnership with MIT turn into a redux of the time Lambo discovered forged composite process? Only time will tell, but having MIT in the fold is definitely going to help the Raging Bull’s chances.

Lamborghini Teams Up With Mitsubishi Rayon To Develop Carbon Fiber Technology

Lamborghini Teams Up With Mitsubishi Rayon To Develop Carbon Fiber Technology

Partnership could help Lamborghini increase its production volume

It certainly goes without saying that Lamborghini holds the distinction of being one of the pioneers on the automotive application of carbon fiber technology. The Italian automaker has been using the premium material for around 30 years dating all the way back to the Lamborghini Countach. But even with that status, Lamborghini continues to be proactive in the innovation of carbon fiber, having recently opened a carbon fiber research center in Washington. Now, the company is partnering with Mitsubishi Rayon, a Japanese textiles company owned by Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings.

Details are still vague on the specifics of the partnership other than the all-encompassing objective of collaborating on further research and development of carbon fiber shells and panels that can be used for mass production. It is worth noting though that the partnership could be tied into Lamborghini’s upcoming production of the Urus. Lamborghini has high expectations for the SUV as it is being targeted as the model that will spearhead the automaker’s push to double its sales volume to 7,000 units a year by 2019 with the Urus accounting for half of that total.

Given the existing volume of cars that Lamborghini produces these days – the company can produce five chassis per day – there’s going to be a need to accelerate production without any drops in efficiency to accommodate the arrival of the Urus. That’s likely where Mitsubishi Rayon’s expertise comes into the picture. The firm is regarded as one of Japan’s biggest makers of acrylic fabric, the same material that’s used in the development of carbon fiber. If Lamborghini needs help in developing tools and methods in mass producing carbon fiber to coincide with its own increase in production, collaborating with Mitsubishi Rayon is as good a partnership as any to help the Italian automaker achieve its goals.

Lamborghini Touts Advancements Made With Carbon Fiber Technology: Video

Lamborghini Touts Advancements Made With Carbon Fiber Technology: Video

Forged composite is today what something else will be in the future

Remember when Lamborghini celebrated the opening of its new Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory in Seattle, Washington last month? As it turns out, the Italian automaker also released a promotional video touting its use of forged composite, a development that the supercar brand counts as one of the most important ones to come from its Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory.

The history of forged composite actually dates back to 2010 when it was developed by Lamborghini and Callaway Golf. Essentially, forged composite is made up of bundles of carbon fiber that are held together by a combination of resin and malleable paste of carbon. It caused quite a stir when it was created that Lamborghini didn’t waste any time showcasing the technology on the Sesto Elemento supercar.

Today, Lamborghini is still regarded as the pioneers of forged composite and judging by the video, the Italian automaker isn’t being bashful about it. Nobody can really blame Lambo for puffing its chest when it comes to this technology, especially in the wake of opening it new Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory in Washington where it has another partner in the wings – no pun intended – in Boeing to help the automaker push the boundaries of innovation as only Lamborghini believes it can.

The ad may be about forged composite, but it might as well also be about what Lambo’s new Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory can develop for the future. In its own words, “innovation runs fast, but we run faster.” Hard to argue against that.

Lamborghini Celebrates Opening Of Carbon Fiber Research Center In Seattle

Lamborghini Celebrates Opening Of Carbon Fiber Research Center In Seattle

It’s called the Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory and it’s got ambitious goals in mind for Lambo

Lamborghini has officially cut the ribbon on its new Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory in Seattle, Washington, paving the way for the Italian automaker to continue its relentless pursuit in further developing carbon fiber technology. The research center is going to operate as an outside entity from Lambo’s headquarters in Sant’Agata Bolognese and will have one core mission: unlock and maximize the full potential of carbon fiber technology to make future Lamborghini supercars faster and lighter than they’ve ever been.

Lamborghini’s decision to open the ACSL facility in Seattle is a strategic one that’s partly brought about by the company’s collaboration with Boeing, the airline manufacturer who has its own state-of-the-art production facility located within an hour’s drive of Lambo’s new ACSL facility. The two companies have a long-standing partnership in developing carbon fiber innovations. Having Lambo’s research center be so close to Boeing’s massive production facility should help add a new wrinkle to their joint research and development of carbon fiber technology.

The opening of the ACSL is also tinged with history, at least as far as Lamborghini is concerned, as the grand opening of the facility coincided with the 30th anniversary of the automaker using carbon fiber reinforced polymer in its cars. The first Lamborghini to use carbon fiber was the Countach 5000 Quattrovalvole back in 1986 and to this day, the Italian automaker has continued to rely on the strong and lightweight material in the development of its cars. The technology has admittedly evolved since then, none more important than the development of forged composite, which made its debut in 2010 when it was used on the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento.

Needless to say, Lamborghini is very serious about its carbon fiber development and the opening of this research facility is another step for the Italian automaker to assert its industry-leading expertise on the material. Think the fully exposed carbon fiber body of the Lamborghini Centenario is as good as it’s going to get for Lambo? Think again.

Lamborghini Brings First Virtual Driving Experience To Geneva

Lamborghini Brings First Virtual Driving Experience To Geneva

Nowadays, finding speed in the real world often starts in the virtual one. Pro racing teams are spending huge sums to create super-accurate simulators that allow drivers to practice, engineers to analyze, and accountants to save bucks on tires and fuel. It’s all very cool tech, and thankfully, it’s trickling down to folks like us.

In fact, virtual reality is getting so good we can now get a small taste of the simulated rich life simply by throwing on a pair of goggles. To help promote this concept, Samsung and Lamborghini teamed up to give attendees at the 2015 Geneva International Motor Show a chance to sample the Huracán on the road and track.

Using a VR headset visor with Oculus technology, participants are given the choice of three different experiences: Sport, where the supercar is taken along the scenic cliff edge of the Amalfi Coast; Strada, which plots a route through the town of Amalfi; and Corsa, where every ounce of raging-bull performance is unleashed on the Imola racing circuit.

Looks like fun, but I’m still waiting for the full-blown rich-guy simulator. You know, the one with the multi-million dollar villas and supermodel yacht parties.

Lamborghini drops Manuals, Sesto Elemento may still see production

Lamborghini drops Manuals, Sesto Elemento may still see production

Last year, Lamborghini began talks about dropping their manual transmission in favor of a fully automatic line. This idea was christened in the Lamborghini Aventador and its new ISR transmission, and will live on in all of the brand’s future supercars. According to the company, every single one of their supercars will now carry a fully automated seven-speed single-clutch transmission. It may seem as if Lamborghini is tucking its tail - among other things - in between its legs, but Maurizio Reggiani, Lamborghini’s R&D director, suggests the change actually makes sense for the brand’s customer base and will improve the car’s performance.

According to Reggiani, just 1 to 2 percent of the cars being produced out of their Sant’Agata Bolognese factory are equipped with three pedals. He adds that a manual transmission is "a break in the electronic chain of command that harmonizes absolutely everything that happens between engine combustion chamber and tire contact patch. The only way Lamborghini can guarantee soothing smoothness in city driving or back-thumpingly explosive acceleration on a winding road is for every system in the car to be interconnected. You can’t rely on a driver to always shift gears without glitches."

Lamborghini VX7 by Asus is a Murcielago in laptop form

Lamborghini VX7 by Asus is a Murcielago in laptop form

It’s not common place for brands in other industries collaborating with automakers to create a line of products that have been co-branded with their partners. You could even say that Ferrari has made this a lucrative form of business, especially with laptops and mobile phones in the form of their partnership with Acer.

Another Italian supercar maker that has dived into the computer business is Lamborghini. Over the years, the Raging Bull has collaborated with computer company Asus to build a set of laptop models that not only rivals the Ferrari/Acer partnership, but also gives Lambo aficionados another way to support their favorite automotive brand without having to buy their ridiculously expensive supercars.

Recently, the Lamborghini/Asus partnership revealed the latest fruit of their collaboration: the VX7 gaming laptop. Already in its seventh generation, the VX7 was designed using the Murcielago as its inspiration. The laptop features a clamshell lid with the iconic ’Toro’ logo; it’s got leather-lined palm-rests; heck, it even has a taillight-configuration on the back of the computer.

Apart from all the Lamborghini details on the laptop, its specs also give justice to its designation as a gaming laptop. It’s got a 2.0-GHz Intel Core processor with 16GB of RAM. It also has a Blu-Ray combo drive and an enormous storage space of 1.5 terrabytes that can be stored through a dual hard-drive configuration. The VX7 is available with a choice of two colors - Orange or Carbon Fiber - at a price tag befitting of Lamborghini’s status. That’s right, if you have a remote interest in this bad boy, you’re going to have to fork over €1,995, which is about $2,800 based on current exchange rates.

Nobody ever said Lamborghini products came cheap. Even if it’s just a laptop.

Tonino Lamborghini set to release its own laptop

Tonino Lamborghini set to release its own laptop

Branching out to merchandising has long been a source of cash flow for some automakers. It’s really not a complicated pie to figure out since fans of luxury automakers like Ferrari and Lamborghini who have no resources to purchase their own supercars can still buy a piece of these brands through other items, specifically t-shirts, bags, shoes, and even laptops.

Whereas other brands, especially Ferrari, have already stamped their iconic brand names on a number of laptops. Lamborghini’s already got their partnership with Asus in producing a range of laptops, but that trend seems to have triggered an exception as Tonino Lamborghini, the son of Lamborghini founder Feruccio Lamborghini, has released it’s very own variation on a laptop that will bear the iconic Italian brand’s raging bull badge.

Now, if you’re looking for something as exotic as the cars that are produced in Sant’ Agata, this laptop isn’t one of them. The laptop’s tech specs aren’t anything to go crazy about and the design is relatively simple, at best. But if those aren’t the things that worry you, then at 650 euros, it’s a pretty good bargain deal compared to other auto-branded laptops out on the market.

Custom Lamborghini Safe by Brown Safe

A rich owner of a Lamborghini decided that just owning one of the most beautiful and most exotic cars in the world wasn’t nearly enough. So, he decided to do something with what we would presume to be ’loose change’ - for him, at least - and have Brown Safe, an exclusive and high-end builder of vaults and safes, make him his very own customized Lamborghini safe.

No, we’re not making this up. Apparently, these guys over at Brown Safe specialize in building residential jewelry safes, custom watch and jewelry safes, and vault doors made only from the finest quality commercial grade materials - whatever that means.

One of their most expensive safes, the Chronos watch safe and ballistic armor plate jewelry safe has become so popular among customers, like the aforementioned Lamborghini owner, that he decided to ask them to make him his very own customized Lambo safe. There’s no word on how much it cost to build this thing, but judging from what it looks like, those guys over at Brown Safe may not be kidding when they say that they only build their vaults using "the finest quality commercial grade materials."
