With the pandemic still looming over our heads, 2021 was a pretty action-packed year for the auto industry. Sure, you had challenges, with automakers having to contend with issues like chip shortages, causing delays to consumers. But regardless, the show had to go on and we got some pretty cool cars making their debut, predominantly towards the latter half of 2021.

Let’s get one thing out of the way, 2021 really was also the year, when the market as a whole began to embrace EV’s and you could see several automakers both the legacy as well as EV startups bring several new models to market. Having said that, we did see some pretty cool ICE cars, also make their debut. Now there were several cars that made headlines this year, it was very difficult to pick out the best ones, but the cars on this list definitely stood out. Here’s our list of some of the most highly anticipated and important cars that were unveiled in 2021.

Toyota and Lexus recently unveiled a whole bunch of electric vehicles (EVs), and it basically covers every single niche and market. You can say that Toyota is pretty much late on the EV game, but they’re now trying to catch up in a big way. One of those EVs is this unnamed electric pickup concept that was also previewed during the press event.

CarWow has been synonymous with its drag racing videos on YouTube, but this time they have something different in-store. This time, two Toyota off-road vehicles are being pitted against each other, to determine, which is the better off-roader and workhorse? Moreover, both the Toyota Hilux and Toyota Land Cruiser (Prado) are not being sold on the US market, so the real question is, are you missing something?

You won’t really know what to make of this strange Mk4 Toyota Supra, that’s packing a Cummins diesel tank engine under the hood. Overkill? Well, let’s take a closer look and see what you make of it after you check out the mods on this rig.

The new generation Toyota Tundra made a huge impression when it was launched in September 2021, so it was to be expected for it to be one of the stars of this year’s SEMA Show. One of the coolest concepts based on the new generation Tundra comes from Toyota Racing Development (TRD) and is called TRD Desert Chase Tundra.

The Toyota Land Cruiser 40 is, arguably, the brand’s most iconic off-road vehicle. It was produced from 1960 to 1984 (1968-2001 in Brazil). Although production of spare parts was discontinued, that’s about to change. On August 1st, Toyota Gazoo Racing announced that production of spare parts for the classic 4X4 will once again commence, which would allow owners of the vehicle to extend its life cycle.

What’s the best way to get someone’s attention? Scream? I guess that’s what Toyota thinks because it just launched an off-road trim of a pickup truck in a bright lime shade! Neither ‘Off-road’ nor ‘pickup truck’ can be associated with a lime exterior shade. But, Toyota seems to have done that with the 2022 Tacoma TRD Pro.

The 2022 Tacoma TRD Pro arrives in this new exclusive shade with some more off-road enhancements like an increased suspension lift, new shocks, etc. Sweet, huh?

Adventure lifestyle is the next big thing and automakers are capitalizing on it by rolling out accessories and equipment. This generally includes stuff like tents, and awnings that can be fixed onto your ride. But, what if you got a part of a vehicle that can be hitched to your vehicle? Confused? Well, Toyota has come up with a TRD-Sport Trailer, which is essentially a Tacoma pickup truck’s bed with all the overlanding stuff installed on it. Ridiculously good, isn’t it?

With everything that is going on this year, it feels like we’re heading towards an apocalypse. Perhaps, that is why we’re seeing so many converted vehicles lately. Here’s another fine example that was listed on Craigslist. JBA Motors has posted an ad for this 2016 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4x4 Custom that looks Armageddon-ready. The brute has less than 300 miles on the odo, which makes it practically brand new.

With a manufacturing facility sitting deep in the heart of the state, Toyota is always a lock to be in attendance at the Texas State Fair. Past years have shown the automaker debut models like the Toyota 4Runner Nightshade Edition to go with SX versions of the Toyota Tundra and Toyota Tacoma.

This year, Toyota is returning the to the fair with a more functionally inclined special edition model called the 4Runner Venture Edition. The exclusive touches are mostly of the cosmetic variety, but there’s enough of them in the 4Runner Venture Edition to go around to pique the interests of prospective owners of the special edition SUV. The Toyota 4Runner Venture Edition is already available for order so if you’ve got an eye for a new roof rack, among other things, you can buy Toyota’s latest special edition SUV for a tidy sum of $45,405.

When you are the market leader and basically run the show, you can do whatever you want. Well, at least that’s what Toyota is doing with the Tacoma. The Tacoma has been the segment leader for 14 years in a row now and the sales are only growing every year. Although the base Tacoma received a moderate price hike, the Tacoma TRD Pro is what caught our attention. According to CarsDirect.com, the 2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro will get a $1,000 price tag hike, whereas the base 2020 Tacoma will be dearer by only $200.

Have you heard of the Patriot Campers? Well, these guys are magicians. If you haven’t heard about them, here’s a little brief. The company was born in 2013, but it has already taken over the world by storm. Patriot Campers is an Australian company that has diversified itself into many branches. The company’s trailers are quite famous amongst camping enthusiasts. Patriot Campers even works on creating off-road beasts. The PCOR – Patriot Campers Off RoadRoad – division handles the mods on SUVs and trucks. A staple within this is called the Supertourer, wherein the company works on the Ford Ranger, the Landcruiser 200, and the Ram truck, apart from the LC79. The company recently posted a video on YouTube where they show us a custom-built LC79 right before its handover. Will this particular LC79 be any different from the other Supertourers?

First introduced back in 1995, the Toyota Tacoma is currently in its third generation. With nearly a quarter century of history behind it, the Tacoma nameplate is well-established as one of the most unbreakably rugged and reliable vehicles on the planet, and now this mid-size pickup is headed for a refresh for the 2020 model year. The latest Tacoma is framed as the “best-equipped ever,” and in TRD guise, it looks to mate its traditional off-roading chops in the rough stuff with newfound comfort and tech appointment in the cabin. However, considering the latest third-generation made its debut back in 2015, as well as a major influx of competition throughout the segment, does the 2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD still manage to keep pace?

Modern compact crossovers are some of the most popular types of vehicles nowadays, and one of the nameplates that helped establish this trend is the Toyota RAV4 that debuted in 1994. But ever since the first generation, now seen as a classic of the genre, Toyota has been watering down the RAV4 formula. This trend peaked with the previous-gen model that, in my eyes, was the least desirable RAV4 ever.

Who would have thought two or three years ago that Toyota will reveal the 2020 RAV4 TRD Off-road at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show? Well, I did, a bit, as back in 2016 Toyota decided it needed more young people (preferably males) in its showrooms that make deals on the RAV4. Toyota even entered a FWD rally competition with the cool RAV4 with Ryan Millen behind the wheel. And that was the start of the major revamp of the entire RAV4 character that has finally come to fruition with the reveal of the new Toyota RAV4. The RAV4 TRD Off-road, however, is a proper concoction spruced from the seats laid down by that Millen RAV4 rally SUV.

Toyota has managed to turn the TRD Pro badge into some sort a privilege for the SUVs in the Japanese lineup. It’s like an Ironman Triathlon where the beasts have to go through a series of challenges to earn the TRD Pro badge. The latest entrant to that list the Toyota Sequoia. Toyota teased a new vehicle being added to the TRD Pro lineup a couple of days back and to be honest, the Sequoia would have been the last option on everyone’s minds. But well, the TRD Pro Sequoia is ready and will be officially making its debut at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show.

Toyota dropped a teaser video for its next TRD Pro truck that will be unveiled on February 7th at the Chicago Auto Show.You don’t see much in the video, but we’re guessing Toyota is either previewing an updated version of the Tundra TRD Pro or a new model altogether.

We’ve talked about Toyota’s plans to add a TRD version to every Toyota there is in the past, and this means we’re on the cusp of getting more TRD Sport and TRD Pro models. This time around, Toyota is preparing us for a rugged new TRD Pro truck that’s seen disrupting the peace in a 15-second clip posted by the Japanese automaker on social media.

It seems like there’s no shortage of “off-road ready” crossovers on the market these days - or at least that’s the impression you might get glancing over all the PR fluff. But while glory shots on top of a mountain might look good, the actual capability of these machines doesn’t always live up to the hype. Fortunately, Toyota can both talk the talk and walk the walk, as I find out firsthand after the Japanese automaker flew me out to Carmel, California for a stint in the new 2019 RAV4.
