Which motorcycles on sale today give the best mpg?
The beginning of this century saw the world views changing gradually towards climate change and the need to preserve the environment. This, along with stringent policies, has forced the manufacturers to develop motorcycles that can run cleaner fuel and extract the maximum economy from it, sometimes even at the cost of performance.
Bad news for people who seek the element of thrill, but a pretty good one for someone living in urban jungles where folks prefer commuting on a motorcycle rather thank a car for its practicality and frugal fuel-efficiency. Then there are us few who love the idea of putting serious miles on two-wheels and living the adventure.
We here have compiled a list to give you the best available tools for such situations and save some money on gas while at it.
2018 Cake Kalk
The brainchild of a Swedish Stefan Ytterborn, “Cake” is a new player in the electric transportation business that intends “to speed up the journey towards a zero-emission society, while enhancing excitement and fun.” And their very first step is this limited edition Kalk electric off-roader that blurs the line between mountain bikes and motorcycles.
Jumping into the category of light electric off-road motorbikes, the Kalk is the first one of a number of models to come and is walking the path that will change the future of riding. The focus here has been off-road performance and innovation in terms of weight and simplicity of riding on the Cake.
The Qatari desert has some of the world’s highest sand dunes where the adventure junkies meet up to run on Dune bashing sessions. You can find 4x4s, Quads, ATVs, and motorcycles pumping their adrenaline on the soft sands of the desert.
There are also freeride motocross sessions where riders hop onto their dirt trail bikes and race up a towering sand dune to jump almost up to 100ft in the air to finally land on the soft sand. One lad here was doing his usual runs where he built up speed and took the jump like business every day. But when he was about to land, his whole life must have flashed before his eyes.
Yamaha enters the electric world with the new TY-E trial motorcycle
Entering the electric bandwagon, the Japanese Blue team has officially announced its future plans with its new electric trials bike, the TY-E. This came just days after Yamaha filed a patent for TY-E name, which is now in its concept stage.
Setting sights on the 2018 FIM Trial-E Cup races in France and Belgium, the Yamaha Factory Racing chaps have worked out of Yamaha’s ‘Evolving R & D’ unit to get on with this rad looking concept. It is a 154 lbs lightweight, low-speed high torque machine built to take on any terrains.
Someone already sketched out a Harley-Alta motorcycle
Just days after Harley-Davidson and Alta Motors entered into a wedlock, creative heads from around the world have begun letting their imagination go wild. We have come across what we think is the first rendered image of the motorcycle that is touted to come out of this marriage.
The bike envisioned here is an electric street-tracker model that captures Harley’s values onto Alta’s Redshift platform. As a matter of fact, Alta has already showcased its street-tracker concept at last year’s One Moto Show, in Portland, Oregon. The Redshift ST concept was also built on the same platform.
CAKE is giving us the KALK. An electric dirt bike
I surprised myself there with the title. A ’LOL’ moment happened in my brain, all thanks to this new Swedish firm entering the two-wheeled world with their first product.
The brainchild of a Swedish Stefan Ytterborn, Cake intends “to speed up the journey towards a zero-emission society, while enhancing excitement and fun.” And their very first step is this Kalk electric off-roader that blurs the line between mountain bikes and motorcycles.
Jay Leno gets a taste of Travis Pastrana’s craziness
A professional motocross racer, 17-time X Games winner, world record distant jumper, and the list goes on. Having so many tags behind his name, Travis Pastrana is undoubtedly the crazies daredevil there is out there. He has already had 32 surgeries and is still earning to get onto his bike every single time.
Jay Leno, the host of "The Tonight Show" back in his days, had the 15-year-old Travis on his show just when the stuntman had turned Pro. Now, after a decade, both meet at Travis’s own show: The Nitro Circus.
Leno is going to participate in one of the crazy stunts happening at the Nitro Circus and it is a huge deal.
The 2018 Dakar is just a month away
With MotoGP ending its season last month along with the WSBK and drag races, there is only one race for us, enthusiasts, to look forward to. And it is the mothership.
The Dakar Rally (or simply "The Dakar"; formerly known as the "Paris–Dakar Rally") is the world’s most challenging cross-country rally event that judges the physical and mental aptitudes of the rider and the machine since its inception in 1978.
For the 40th edition of this grueling race, the world’s top off-roaders are revisiting the Pacific Ocean and the dunes of Peru on the, to travel on a gruesome track through Bolivia and finally culminating in Argentina. The 5,500-mile race will last 14 days (6th – 20th January 2018) and is split up into seven stages.
Revealed at the 2014 EICMA show in Milan, the Twenty family — named so to commemorate Scorpa’s 20-year anniversary — includes three models: the 125, 250 and 300. For 2016, we see major changes and new features — many of which are brought about through data gathered at the World Trials Championship — to launch the second generation of the Twenty line.
If you looked at Scorpa before, look again. The Twenty trials bikes are more competitive than before, even for such a young lineup. They’re not just a dressed up SR model.

Ever had a dream where you’re all suited up in full supermoto gear and you’re sliding along a track with MotoGP’s very own Dani Pedrosa? Seems like a good place to be in, right? Well, the European Luc1 supermoto team had such a moment even though the whole thing was nothing more than a pre-arranged production content.
The team nicknamed the Sultans of Slide has released a new video that proves that its more than just one of the best trials squads in the world. In it, Luc1 was able to feature none other than Pedrosa in full trials action, far from the Spanish rider’s fast-paced, full-throttle day job in MotoGP. Perhaps the current summer break in MotoGP gave Pedrosa enough time to participate in the video?
Whatever the case may be, we got the treat of seeing Pedrosa slide his way into hearts, proving how versatile he is as a motorcycle racer. Put him in a superbike and he’s going to get you results. Put him in a trials bike and he feels just as at home as he does in his trusty RC213V. That’s called all-world talent, ladies and gentlemen.
As for Luc1, the team does what it always does best: provide us with incredible joy just by watching them. As it turns out, the team also has quite the production prowess, too. Just goes to show that when you’re surrounded by talented people with a passion for what they do, you can make magic happen.
It’s not what we’re used to from Luc1 and Pedrosa for that matter - the acting needs some work, Dani - but hey, at the end of the day, it’s entertainment for us, from the people we love to root for.
Can’t get any better than that.
