GMC Has Responded To The Ford F-150 Lightning’s Threat With The Electric Sierra!
GMC teased the new Electric Sierra Denali in a short teaser clip revealing its electric intentions
by Sidd Dhimaan, on LISTEN 04:25Although it was bound to happen, this comes as a surprise. GMC dropped a short trailer teasing the new upcoming Electric Sierra Denali. The automaker hasn’t revealed any details about it, but gave us a glimpse of its front fascia. Well, something’s better than nothing and we at least know GMC has already started working on electrifying the Sierra.
The Electric GMC Sierra Is Coming To Crowd The Full-Size Pickup Truck Market
The trailer reveals the front fascia of the electric Sierra. You can see the closed grille with huge GMC branding on it. The grille and the badge are illuminated. The L-shaped LED headlights also come on after the grille lights up. Doesn’t it remind you of the Lordstown Endurance?
It even seems to have charging indicators on the face. GMC called it the ‘Electric Sierra Denali’, which points at it being a plush offering, and perhaps, the only offering to begin with. We think it could be following the trend like other EVmakers, wherein the top-spec, fully loaded trims roll out of the factory first.
With the Chevy Silverado EV already confirmed, it was only a matter of time before GMC confirmed that the electric Sierra is also in the works. That said, we don’t expect it to come out anytime soon. The Chevy Silverado EV’s production is slated to begin in 2023, and this GMC truck could also hit the production line around the same time, or a little later.
Taking Silverado EV as a benchmark, the electric Sierra could also boast of a 400-mile range just like its cousin. We expect it to be built from the ground up and not a half-assed attempt by electrifying the existing Sierra, which by the way, came out a couple of months back. It could be based on a version of the Ultium architecture that also underpins the GMC Hummer EV.
GMC Revealed The 2022 Sierra Recently
The automaker revealed the new 2022 Sierra just a few months back. It came with a lot of upgrades, which generally is a very good thing, but made many of them wonder if this is GMC being lethargic about its electrification plans. But, it doesn’t matter now because GMC just confirmed the electric Sierra is also in the works. Side benefit - It now has an updated, upgraded fuel-powered truck that won’t get old anytime soon.
But, since we’re on the topic, let us refresh your memory about the 2022 Sierra. There were some major upgrades for the 2022 model, which also serve as a preview of what to expect from the electric Sierra. Some salient features of the 2022 Sierra include:
- Eight trims in total, including two new trims – Denali Ultimate and AT4X
- Super Cruise hands-free driver-assistance technology
- Four engines on offer, including a new 2.7-liter, four-cylinder turbo mill
- It makes 310 HP and 420 lb-ft of torque, and is mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox
- Refreshed exterior – new grille, redesigned headlamps, refreshed bumpers, new dual-projector LED headlights, MultiPro tailgate, etc.
- Three new exterior shades – Titanium Rush Metallic, Dynamic Blue Metallic, and Desert Sand Metallic
- Plush cabin – leather upholstery, bucket seats, and so on
- A 13.4-inch touchscreen system that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 15-inch diagonal head-up display, etc.
- Starts at $32,495 and tops out at $80,395 before options
Conclusion
As stated earlier, there’s no word on when it will arrive or be revealed. The Chevy Silverado EV is expected to be revealed at the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on January 5th, 2022, but we doubt the GMC Sierra Electric Denali will be there. The truck will be built alongside the Hummer EV at the company’s ‘Zero Factory’ in Detroit and Hamtramck, Michigan.
