These SUVs have faster accelerations than most sports cars
by Nicholas Waithaka, onThe world of SUVs has changed quite a bit since the days when they were only made for off-roading duties. No longer are they lumbering and slow, but SUVs have adopted platforms closer to those used by sedans and hatchbacks. Automakers also included better aerodynamics, making them more like track cars. They were being made for the city and the suburbs and featured high-performing engines. These allow them to defy the laws of physics and accelerate faster than some current saloon cars. It has also made them increasingly popular in the market and a segment opportunity that every brand has capitalized on with offerings. To that end, the following are some of the fastest accelerating SUVs available on the market.
Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio
The Stelvio Quadrifoglio is the sole SUV offering from Alfa Romeo, featuring tall dimensions and a short wheelbase. Aside from good looks, the SUV has a blistering acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds. It owes its sprightliness to the 2.9-liter, twin-turbocharged V-6 engine, which produces 505 horsepower. Like the engine, the eight-speed automatic transmission is the sole option you can get. The Stelvio has a four-wheel-drive system and has a set of adaptive dampers that allow you to choose the firmness of the ride. At full chat, the Stelvio will do a top speed of 176 mph, making it faster than most luxury compact SUVs.
Engine | 2.9-liter, twin-turbocharged V-6 |
---|---|
Power | 505 HP |
Torque | 443 LB-FT |
0 to 60 mph | 3.9 seconds |
Top Speed | 176 mph |

Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk
The Trackhawk is currently the most powerful sports utility vehicle, aside from the Durango due to the 707 horsepower from the 6.2-liter V-8 supercharged engine. When Launch control is initiated, it will sprint from 0 to 60 miles per hour in only 3.5 seconds and top out at 160 miles per hour. It is also appealing as it is more economically priced than some of the luxurious options from Lamborghini and Tesla. The suspension has several modes as well, though it does not exactly have a reputation for being comfortable. It is much harder as well in the track and sport modes. Overall, it may not be the best performance SUV around, but there is no getting around the absurd numbers.
Engine | 6.2-liter V-8 supercharged |
---|---|
Power | 707 HP |
Torque | 645 LB-FT |
0 to 60 mph | 3.5 seconds |
Top Speed | 160 mph |

Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S
Mercedes has upped its game following the increased popularity of its utility vehicles. The redesigned GLE 63 S is its offering for those who need maximum power. Under the hood, you will get a 4.0-liter V-8 twin-turbo engine capable of withstanding 18.9 psi of boost. It is rated at 603 horsepower and linked to a nine-speed automatic transmission. The GLE 63 S accelerated to 60 miles per hour in 3.4 seconds during tests, while the quarter-mile was done in 11.7 seconds. It also handles well like a sports sedan due to the limited-slip rear differential, and though it has an all-wheel-drive system, more than half of the engine torque goes to the front wheels.
Engine | 4.0-liter V-8 twin-turbo |
---|---|
Power | 603 HP |
Torque | 627 LB-FT |
0 to 60 mph | 3.4 seconds |
Top Speed | 174 mph |

Porsche Cayenne Turbo
The Cayenne is one of the premier options in the luxury middle class segment. The New turbo GT has a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The reviews also indicate that it has an acceleration from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds, a full two seconds faster than the base Cayenne. There is a hybrid variant with the same V-8 engine along with a 134 horsepower electric motor. The combined output then is 670 horsepower though it does not improve the acceleration time. Its smooth power delivery and fast transmission mean you may not need to use the paddle shifters, though.
Engine | 4.0-liter V-8 twin-turbocharged |
---|---|
Power | 670 HP |
Torque | 663 LB-FT |
0 to 60 mph | 3.5 seconds |
Top Speed | 183 mph |

Tesla Model X
The Model X is the first electric car on the list and will probably be the first of many in the future. There is something to be said concerning the brutal acceleration that electric cars have as the three motors on the Plaid variant take it to 60 mph within 2.5 seconds. Its driving range is 340 miles on a single charge which is average for a high-performance utility vehicle, but the figure may improve in the coming years. The Tesla SUV has a top speed of 155 miles per hour, which is significantly less than many of its competitors on this list. The handling is surprisingly agile as well for a 5,500-pound vehicle due to the low center of gravity.
Powertrain | Electric |
---|---|
Power | 1,020 HP |
0 to 60 mph | 2.5 seconds |
Top Speed | 155 mph |

Lamborghini Urus
Since its introduction in 2017, the Urus stunned customers showing a performance car manufacturer can design a sporty SUV with the same attributes as the other models in its lineup. It is powered by a 4.0-liter V-8 engine rated at 641 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. The automaker indicates the 0 to 60 miles per hour time is 3.6 seconds, and it has a top speed of 190 miles per hour. In the city, on the Strada mode, the Urus has been described as comfortable and belies nothing about the power it can bring to bear. When set in Neve as well, the Urus is capable of climbing up a ski slope.
Engine | 4.0-liter V-8 |
---|---|
Power | 641 HP |
Torque | 627 LB-FT |
0 to 60 mph | 3.6 seconds |
Top Speed | 190 mph |

Bentley Bentayga
The Bentayga is toward the luxury side of the spectrum of sporty SUVs bringing interior quality and metallic accents. However, it’s not just lavish leathers and real wood trim. The Bentley sports the typical 6.0-liter W-12 twin-turbo engine, which produces 626 horsepower. That means it can go from 0 to 60 mph within a time of 3.6 seconds, and its power delivery is quite smooth, courtesy of the eight-speed ZF transmission. There are other engine options, though they are not as good as you could go for the 4.0-liter V-8 or the 2.9-liter V-6 hybrid rated at 542 and 443 horsepower, respectively. The automaker confirms that the best variant had a top speed of 190 miles per hour, similar to that of the Urus.
Engine | 6.0-liter W-12 |
---|---|
Power | 626 HP |
Torque | 664 LB-FT |
0 to 60 mph | 3.6 seconds |
Top Speed | 190 mph |

Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat
Though it was designed to be a family hauler, the Durango SRT is one of the sportiest utility vehicles on the American market. It is probably because of the 6.2-liter V-8 engine, which produces 710 horsepower. The Durango has an acceleration time of 3.4 seconds to 60 mph on its way to a top speed of 180 miles per hour. However, it is quite thirsty, considering the fuel economy of 13 mpg. The ride and handling are good, though, as it rides on a specially tuned suspension with adaptive dampers and Pirelli all-season tires. The Durango hellcat may have the dimensions of a typical suburban SUV, but its features imply a fondness for the track.
