That’s three V-8s with a combined power output of over 2,000 horses! What’s not to like?
by Sidd Dhimaan, onThe sight of seeing SUVs rocket down a quarter-mile in a little over 10 seconds is exhilarating. Automakers have realized that people love performance SUVs and it could rake in big numbers for them. Take the Urus for instance. It has been the company’s best-seller since its launch. Even Dodge decided to let all hell break loose by throwing in a supercharged engine under its family SUV’s hood. Throw the Jeep Trackhawk in the mix and you have three of the best performance SUVs that money can buy today.
The folks at Throttle House brought them all together on a drag strip for some straight-line battles. The Urus has obliterated competition mercilessly so far, but can it reign over the mighty powerful FCA....I mean Stellantis twins?
Urus vs. Trackhawk vs. Durrango Hellcat?
The Lamborghini Urus features a 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8 engine under the hood. It dishes out 650 horses and 627 pound-feet of twist. Power is laid down to the ground via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The Urus takes 3.6 seconds to sprint to 62 mph from a standstill and has a top speed of 190 mph. This SUV starts at $108,600 in the U.S.
As for the Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat and the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, both of them draw power from a 6.2-liter, supercharged V-8 HEMI engine. It makes 645 pound-feet of twist in both the SUVs, but there is a negligible difference in the horsepower figures. The Dodge makes 710 ponies, whereas the Jeep produces 707 horses. They are both mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox that sends propels all the wheels. As for the 0-60 mph time, they both take 3.5 seconds.
Who Stands A Chance To Win?
The Durango and the Grand Cherokee are more powerful on paper, but the Urus has a weight advantage.
It stands at around 4,850 pounds, which makes it almost 400 pounds lighter than the Jeep and over 850 pounds lighter than the Durango SRT Hellcat. The Dodge is a seven-seater, hence the extra weight. However, the automaker provides an option to delete the third row to reduce some baggage. That, unfortunately for this race, isn’t the case here. Also, all three SUVs come with capable Launch Controls.
How Did They Fare?
Despite the odds stacked against the Durango because of its size and weight, the power advantage nullified those obstacles. We won’t be revealing the results here, but the first drag race wasn’t actually as close as you would’ve expected it to be. The hosts pointed it could be because the tires weren’t warmed up, but it was still a surprising result. For the second race, the launch controls were deactivated but the results weren’t any different. The third one was a rolling race and the results flipped completely.
