2022 Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo

The 2022 Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo introduces more power and rear-wheel drive to the more sensible version of the Taycan

The Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo is the more practical version of Porsche’s first, modern-day EV. More importantly, from 2022, both body styles get a GTS version. The Porsche Taycan GTS is already shaping up to be right in the middle of the Taycan lineup, in terms of price and performance, but it also brings a bit more excitement. Find out how, below.

When did Porsche introduce the GTS moniker?

The GTS moniker dates back to Porsche models from the 1980s, such as the 924 GTS and 928 GTS. But while those are top-of-the-line versions of their respective models, the newer GTS models are considered to be the perfect compromise between comfort, performance, and price.

The first of the modern Porsche models to get a GTS version was the 2008 Porsche Cayenne, which was followed by the 997-generation 911 GTS. While, initially, the 911 GTS was meant to be a special edition, celebrating the retirement of the 997, demand was so high that Porsche decided to introduce it as part of the model lineup.

Performance

Like other Porsche GTS models, the Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo aims to be right in the middle, in terms of performance. With 590 horsepower (440 kilowatts) and 626 pound-feet (849 Nm), it sits comfortably between the Taycan 4S and the Turbo S. The 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) sprint happens in 3.5 seconds, which is 0.2 seconds slower than the Taycan GTS. However, the GTS Sport Turismo matches the sedan’s top speed. at 155 mph (250 km/h).

You’ll be glad to know that the Taycan GTS Sport Turismo can also provide a decent range of up to 313 miles (503 km). Thanks to its fast-charging capabilities and 800-Volt architecture, the 93.4 kWh battery can recharge from 5 to 80 percent in just 22.5 minutes.

Until now, the only Taycan offered as a rear-wheel-drive-only was the base model. The Taycan GTS brings a level of excitement, arguably, lacking in the top-tier Taycan models, by being rear-wheel-drive-only. Rear-wheel-drive is what made the base Taycan more engaging to drive than the more expensive variants, but the Taycan GTS adds power to the equation, for even more fun. At 5,152 pounds (2,337 kg), the Taycan GTS Sport Turismo is only 75 pounds (34 kg) heavier than its sedan counterpart.

Porsche Taycan GTS specifications

What is the Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo Styling like

Porsche’s GTS treatment typically adds more blacked-out trim. The Taycan GTS Sport Turismo is no exception, with blacked-out rocker panels, rear diffuser (no longer finished in body color), as well as black accents for the headlights and taillight strip. The Taycan GTS also features two distinctive, lightweight wheel designs – a standard 20-inch and an optional, 21-inch, both of which finished in black.

Something that sets the Taycan GTS Sport Turismo from the rest is that, unlike the Taycan Cross Turismo Versions, it lacks the black trim around the wheel arches. In fact, the GTS is the only station wagon/shooting brake version of the Taycan that goes for a sporty look instead of a more rugged, off-road-ish one.

As with the sedan version of the Taycan GTS, the elegant, driver-centric interior is mostly the same. What the GTS adds is blacked finish to the standard brushed aluminum or optionally, numerous black Race-Tex features. Of course, you get the obligatory GTS badging and embroidery.

What’s the Price of the Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo GTS?

A GTS model from Porsche should be in the middle, not just in terms of performance, but also in terms of price. At $134,650, the Taycan GTS Sport Turismo manages that. To put things in perspective, the entry-level Taycan will set you back $81,150, while the Turbo S starts at $185,000. Meanwhile, the sedan version of the Taycan GTS starts at $132,750, which is $1,900 less than the GTS Sport Turismo. That said, there’s a lot of optional equipment and a Taycan GTS can easily reach the price of a Taycan Turbo S.

Who does the Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo compete with?

Tesla Model S

Tesla has refreshed the Model S for the 2021 model year. It comes with a few tweaks on the outside, significant changes on the inside, and two new performance trims

While 2022 promises to be very competitive for the EV manufacturers, currently the closest analog that is in production is the Tesla Model S. Granted, it does not have a station wagon/shooting brake version, but its hatchback-style rear end makes it comparable.

The Tesla Model S may not have the Taycan’s sporty interior but is generous, in terms of space. Moreover, the hatchback tailgate reveals 28.0 cubic feet (793 liters) of cargo space, which is a lot more than the Taycan port Turismo’s 15.8 cubic feet (447 liters. Both the Model S and Taycan Sport Turismo have folding rear seats. In the case of the Taycan, they reveal 42.8 cubic feet (1,212 liters) of cargo space, while the Tesla boasts an impressive 63.4 cubic feet (1,795 liters) of cargo capacity. In addition, the Model S has another 5.3 cubic feet (150 liters) at the front.

Tesla may not have Porsche’s motorsports heritage, but even the base model, which starts at $94,990 boasts 670 horsepower - 80 over the Taycan GTS. Tesla clearly offers more car for the money, with even the Model S Plaid costing you less -$129,990. That one has 1,020 horsepower and 1,050 pound-feet, allowing for a sprint to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 1.9 seconds. Range-wise, you are looking at 320 miles (515 km), at 75 mph (121 km/h).

Conclusion

With the introduction of the Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo, it’s safe to say, there is a Taycan for everyone. Other GTS models, like the Porsche Panamera GTS and 911 GTS have proven capble mid-tier performers in their respectable model lineups, and things are shaping up to be the same with the Taycan.

The decision to leave it rear-wheel-drive-only is an unexpected, but a welcome one. From what we have learned from the base Taycan, we can say that having only the rear axle driven, makes the car a lot more engaging and visceral. With this in mind, Taycan GTS adds more bang to what is shaping up to be the most driver-focused EV of our time, at least for now.
