2022 Nissan Frontier - Driven

The 2022 Nissan Frontier is a huge upgrade over the outgoing model, breaking the chain of a 15-year design philosophy

The 2022 Nissan Frontier is a huge upgrade over the 2021 model. It features a new design philosophy, a good V-6 engine paired to a competent gearbox, and even has an off-road dedicated trim. We recently tested the 2022 Frontier, and here’s what it's about

Exterior:

Nissan has upgraded the Frontier for the first time in 15 years. The third-gen truck doesn’t share any resemblance with the outgoing model that’s been around since 2007

Exterior:

Up front, the Frontier comes with a sharp, edgy face. You get a black grille with honeycomb mesh detailing instead of the signature V-motion grille. Our example came with Beadlock style alloy wheels shod in 265/70 section all-terrain tires

Exterior:

You get stuff like an aluminum skid plate at the front, three underbody skid plates, and LED headlights, taillights, and fog lights. The PRO-4X has some dedicated decals on the body. It is offered in nine exterior shades, ours being the Deep Blue Purple

Towing and Payload:

The Frontier can tow up to 6,270 pounds and haul up to 1,230 pounds

Interior:

The Frontier PRO-4X is offered with two upholstery options. As standard, you get the charcoal cloth with lava red stitching option. The one you see here is the optional Charcoal leather upholstery

Interior:

Step into the driver’s seat and you’ll see a four-spoke, leather-wrapped steering wheel. The steering wheel looks rather cluttered with all the buttons and the gloss black finish surrounding it. An analog-digital instrument cluster sits behind

Interior:

On the center console, you get a nine-inch touchscreen system. It supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other features include: Dual-zone automatic climate control, Six-speaker audio system, six-way power-adjustable driver seat, etc.

Drivetrain:

The Frontier is powered by a 3.8-liter, V-6 mill that makes 310 HP and 281 lb/ft of torque. It is mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox. The PRO-4X comes with a four-wheel-drive system

Off-Road Equipment:

This off-road dedicated trim features a two-speed transfer case with 4HI and 4LO, Bilstein off-road high-pressure shocks, electronic rear differential locker, rear suspension stabilizer, and so on

Pricing:

The 2022 Frontier starts at $28,140. The PRO-4X is the most expensive model, starting at $37,370 before $1,175 destination. Our test example came with a few packages and accessories, bringing the price to $46,570

Competition – Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road:

This model comes with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine. It makes 278 HP and 265 lb/ft of torque. It can be mated to either a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual gearbox. Also, you can either pair it with a two-wheel-drive system or a four-wheel-drive

Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road:

Some TRD Off-road exclusives include: 16-inch wheels, a rear locking diff, Bilstein shocks, Multi-Terrain Select, Hill Start Assist, and Multi-Terrain Monitor that will help you while off-roading. The 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road starts at $34,690

Competition – Ford Ranger Tremor:

The Tremor is a package on the Ranger that you can have on the XLT and Lariat trims. It is offered with a 2.3-liter EcoBoost mill as the only option and churns out 270 HP and 310 lb/ft of torque. It is paired to a 10-speed auto and a 4WD system

Ford Ranger Tremor:

You get stuff like a suspension lift kit 32-inch all-terrain tires shod around 17-inch wheels, FOX 2.0 monotube dampers, rear locking differential, etc. The Ranger Tremor XLT starts at $33,410 (Ranger XLT - $29,120; Tremor Package - $4,290)
