Mercedes unveiled the EQG Concept, the near-production electric alter-ego of the G-Class SUV, at the 2021 IAA Show and it looks swell

One of the cars unveiled here was the EQG, the EQ electric equivalent of the legendary G-Class SUV, or more popularly known as the G-Wagen. The off-roader is one of the most iconic models ever built and is still going strong despite its boxy and old-school demeanor. In fact, that is the one thing that’s still attracting purists.
The company showcased the EQG Concept that follows a similar path, but with a lot of new tech. This is said to be a near-production concept, so we can expect the real deal to be revealed by next year, perhaps.

What’s Special About The Mercedes-Benz EQG
On the outside, Mercedes has stuck to the same boxy shape. Up front, it features the signature round headlights. Instead of the grille, the SUV features a deep-black radiator grille that is becoming an EQ model staple all across the portfolio. The Concept features an illuminated star logo with a 3D effect. Mercedes has also designed a flat roof rack finished in high-gloss black shade. It comes with a white LED strip integrated into the front edge and a red LED strip at the rear.
The EQG Concept rides on 22-inch polished aluminum wheels that have a very unique design. Such closed designs are becoming a trend with EV manufacturers as they help with the car’s aerodynamics. At the rear, Mercedes has swapped the tailgate spare tire carrier with a square-ish lockable box with white illuminated accents that looks like a wallbox. You can store the charging cable here and can be accessed easily when you want to plug it in.
Speaking of the powertrain and the mechanicals, Mercedes has assured that the EQG will be as rugged and off-road-friendly as the G-Wagen. The body is based on a robust ladder frame and the chassis is extremely off-road capable. It is even said to feature an independent suspension setup at the front.
The Concept EQG is powered by an electric motor on each wheel, which makes it a quad-motor setup. The power outputs aren’t mentioned, but we speculate it will be on par with the AMG G63 at least.
The AMG EQG, whenever it comes out, will be even more powerful; perhaps the most powerful G-Wagen ever. It will also feature a two-speed gearbox.
To give you a perspective, the fuel-powered AMG G63 is powered by a 4.0-liter, bi-turbo V-8 engine that makes 577 horses and 627 pound-feet of torque. It takes 4.5 seconds to sprint to 60 mph from rest and can even tow up to 7,000 pounds. The standard G-Wagen, on the other hand, makes 416 horses and 450 pound-feet of torque.
Conclusion
Mercedes didn’t reveal when the EQG would arrive, but we expect it to debut sometime next year considering this is a near-production concept model. The production could begin after the launch and the deliveries could begin after 2023. These are just speculative timelines and nothing is confirmed by Mercedes.
The German automaker hasn’t revealed any information about the interior either. It’ll be interesting to see if the automaker sticks to an old-school layout with very few high-tech elements, or will it go berserk and offer stuff like the Hyperscreen on the off-roader.
