The sheer similarity between the 991 GT3 RS and the 992 GT3 makes for an exciting drag strip battle

The folks at Carwow brought in the 991 Porsche 911 GT3 RS to take on the new 992 911 GT3 on a drag strip. The cars are eerily similar to each other, as they share the same engine, gearbox, drive layout, exhaust, and even weigh almost the same. And at the onset, it looks like it will be a mighty close finish. But, which car would claim the bragging rights and go down in the history books as a better straight-line performer?

The 991 GT3 RS Has The Edge Over The 992 GT3

Both the cars feature the same 4.0-liter, flat-six naturally aspirated engine and the seven-speed PDK
The GT3 RS is powered by a 4.0-liter, flat-six naturally aspirated engine that makes 520 horses and 347 pound-feet of torque.

The engine redlines at 9,000 rpm! Power is routed to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

The GT3 RS makes 520 HP and 347 lb-ft of torque, whereas the new GT3 makes the same torque and horses fewer
The 992 GT3 also features the same engine with a few tweaks, and it churns out 510 ponies and an identical torque figure.

Here, too, power is channeled to the rear wheels only via the same seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

The GT3 RS holds a 10-horsepower advantage over the new GT3, which could’ve been nullified if the new GT3 was lighter even by the slightest of margins. However, it is on the other side of the fence and weighs 11 pounds heavier than the 3,153-pound GT3 RS.

How Did The GT3s Do Against Each Other?

In theory, the GT3 RS had the edge over the new GT3, and the same translated in the real world as well. The GT3 RS got the smallest of leads right off the starting line and the same distance was maintained till the very end. It could also be the reaction times, but at least it seems like the small power and weight advantage the 991 holds over the 992 came into play here.

In the second race, the 992 GT3 was switched in Track mode and it was a mistake. The GT3 RS, despite the stutter between the gearshifts, was quicker off the line and got a healthy lead which led to the 992 driver giving up midway.

For the third race, the GT3 was switched to Sport mode but it didn’t affect the result in any way whatsoever. It looked like the GT3 RS jumped the start, but it wouldn’t have mattered given the lead it got. The GT3 RS finished this race in 11.3 seconds, whereas the GT3 was 0.2 seconds slower. In the end, the 991 Porsche 911 GT3 RS won the drag series 3-0.

The ‘Carwow’ team pit the 991 Porsche 911 GT3 RS against the 992 911 GT3 for a series of races

Next up was the rolling race from 50 mph. The GT3 RS got a better kickdown and a small lead, but at around 126 mph, the new GT3 went past its green-shade rival to win the race and get the scoreboard ticking. They raced again from 50 mph, but this time from 50 mph and locked in the third gear. This was even closer than before, but the result was the same. So, the rolling races belonged to the 992 GT3.

Finally, there was the brake test from 70 mph, which the 992 GT3 won again. They conducted this test twice with the cars switching over to the other side of the track the second time, but it made no difference.
