• Most Anticipated 2020 Lego Speed Champions Car Sets

2020 is set to continue the upward Lego Speed Champions trend we saw in 2019

LISTEN 04:58

Lego won’t slow down its Speed Champions range expansion in 2020, which means one thing: we are in for some interesting new sets which, in case you didn’t get the memo, will be 25% larger (eight-stud wide instead of six-stud wide) than the previous ones, so this basically means more details without the use of stickers and the fact that you’ll be able to fit two mini-figures inside a car, as it will no longer use a centrally-mounted steering wheel setup.

The Danish toymaker has confirmed five 2020 Speed Champions sets so far, but in typical Lego fashion, we’re willing to bet that more builds are going to be announced along the way. In all fairness, we’re eager to get our hands on each and every of these sets, so that’s why we’ve included all of them below. Luckily, we won’t have to wait too much for them to hit the stores (physical or online, for that matter) as Lego’s planning to launch them on January 1, 2020. They’re not yet on sale, but we’ll update the article with extra links once they hit the market.

Lamborghini might be looking to give the Urus ST-X its own racing series, but while that happens, you could be racing your pocket-size Urus ST-X in the comfort of your home, joined by the menacing-looking Huracan Super Trofeo. Overall, we’re impressed with how close to reality the Urus ST-X actually is, although the idea of having to deal with all those stickers on the Huracan tones down our enthusiasm a notch.

The Lambo Urus ST-X and Huracan Super Trofeo EVO set is made of 663 pieces and is also accompanied by two mini-figures and a starting grid line. Price.: $50

Speed Champions Formula E Panasonic Jaguar Racing & Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy race cars

Also in the line of motorsport, this Speed Champions Jaguar-focused set is all about the British make’s efforts in Formula E and its support series dubbed Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy, which will race the Leaping Cat’s all-electric I-Pace, albeit in a heavily track-prep form, with boosted aerodynamics and all-performance-everything bits and bobs.

Now, the Lego Speed Champions set offers two cars: the second-gen Panasonic Jaguar Racing I-Type 4 single-seater and the I-Pace eTrophy racer. In all honesty, we think the Formula E race car looks fantastic, just like the eTrophy race car - this could very well be a consequence of Lego’s decision to enlarge the 2020 Speed Champions sets by 25%; this particular set has 565 pieces, in case you were wondering. Price: $30.

Speed Champions Audi Sport Quattro S1

Are you familiar with the Quattro badge sitting on most of Audi’s modern cars? Well, this is the car that carried on the Quattro craze - winning the 1985 Pikes Peak Hill Climb in the process - and we’re ecstatic that Lego made a Speed Champions set out of it. Enter the Audi Sport Quattro S1, a fearsome competitor in the Group B rally racing league. Plus, the Quattro nameplate is turning 35, so what better way to celebrate?

The 250-piece car kit is joined by a race suit-wearing mini-figure but we’re impressed by the level of detail Lego managed to replicate. Don’t get us wrong, the real car’s boxy shape made it easier for Lego’s designers, but we way the livery aligns with the car’s edges is worthy of a standing ovation. Price: $20.

Speed Champions Ferrari F8 Tributo

The real-life Ferrari F8 Tributo was conceived to replace the 488, and while it’s definitely aimed at the One Percent, Lego’s Speed Champions Ferrari F8 Tributo set can land Maranello’s intricate supercar right on your desk for quite a good price. This set is one of the many concocted by Lego and Ferrari along the years, in Speed Champions or Creator form and it packs enough levels of details to make us want it ASAP. Capped at 275 pieces, the set includes a Ferrari-dressed mini-figure and less stickers than we expected - which is always a good thing. Price: $20.

Speed Champions Nissan GT-R Nismo

LEGO Speed Champions Introduces a Nissan GT-R NISMO We Can All Afford

Nissan is still reluctant to send the aging Nissan GT-R (and its Nismo-badged iteration) to retirement, claiming that Godzilla still has enough fire in its belly to stay relevant in the ever-volatile supercar segment. While we’re not that sure about those claims, we’re happy to report that there will be a Speed Champions set depicting the current-generation Nissan GT-R Nismo.

The set brings together 298 pieces, a mini-figurine, and the GT-R’s iconic rear end dominated by the double round taillights. This one packs quite a number of stickers, too, but we’re willing to overlook that since it’s not everyday that Nissan works with Lego on a GT-R-themed set. Price: $20.

Tudor’s first encounter with cars took place when he was only a child. Back then, his father brought home a Trabant 601 Kombi and a few years later, a Wartburg 353. At that time, he was too young to know how they worked and way too young to drive them, but he could see one thing – each of them had a different ethos and their own unique personality. As time went on, he started seeing that in other cars as well, and his love for the automobile was born.  Read full bio
