2020 Jeep Compass - Driven
Jeep Compass has been in the market for over a decade now and has become a staple moniker in the segment now. This two-row SUV is one of the rare models in this segment that can actually be taken off the roads without doubting its abilities. Of course, it’s no Cherokee, but it does a lot better than its rivals in this aspect. Although it features a heavy 2.4-liter engine, the power outputs aren’t that great and the nine-speed automatic gearbox makes the whole drive even more lethargic. However, it comes with a nice interior setup, decent tech features, and aesthetics that will please all and offend none. So, should you pick the Jeep Compass over the Honda CR-V or the Ford Escape?
2019 Jeep Compass Hybrid
The Compass has been in Jeep’s stable for around 13 years now. It was unveiled as a concept at the 2002 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Although revealed as a two-door concept, the Compass was ultimately launched as a four-door crossover four years after it made its world premiere in Detroit. Five years into production, Jeep decided to give the Compass a face that resonated with the Grand Cherokee. Soon, the Compass started receiving its own identity as with many off-road features and packages available. In 2017, the second-generation of the Compass was launched, and it replaced its predecessor, as well as the Jeep Patriot. It will not be the worst thing to say that even though it could not garner big numbers for the automaker from 2007 to 2017, there was consistent growth in the sales figures. However, 2018 turned out to be the breakthrough year for the Jeep Compass. Jeep sold 171,167 examples of the Compass in 2018, an increase of 87,914 from 83,253 copies it sold in 2017. That’s more than 100-percent growth! Carrying over its rich form from last year, the Compass came to Switzerland with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The Compass did not come alone; the Renegade accompanied it with the same mill under its hood. It’s like two brothers wearing the same clothes to go to a party. That’s cute.
Jeep Compass Plug-in Hybrid Debuts in Geneva with 31-mile EV range
The second-generation Jeep Compass has yet to see a comprehensive mid-cycle facelift, but it just became one of the first Jeeps to feature a hybrid drivetrain. The electrified Compass made its global debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, alongside the Renegade hybrid.
Jeep Heads to Geneva With Long Line of Special Edition Models
Jeep will have a big presence at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, spearheaded largely by a handful of special edition models for the Renegade, Compass, Cherokee, and Grand Cherokee. Each of the special edition Jeep models will bring something unique to the table, though a few of them will share the same “S” moniker. All special edition Jeeps feature stylish upgrades that should appeal to a wide range of customers across Europe. All special edition Jeeps will also be available for purchase at some point in the year. Most will arrive in the second quarter of 2019, with the earliest to arrive being the Cherokee Trailhawk, which hits dealerships in April. If you can’t wait that long, the Jeep Compass Night Eagle is already available at Jeep dealerships. Pricing details for all special edition Jeep models are not yet available.
First Drive: 2017 Jeep Compass
The Jeep Compass enters its second generation for 2017 and is new from the tire treads up. That’s a huge deal considering just how terrible the first generation Compass was. It’s clear Jeep is confident the new Compass will succeed; it not only replaces the outgoing version, but also the equally terrible Patriot. The new Compass joins the boxy Renegade and funky Cherokee to comprise a relatively new crossover lineup. To see how the 2017 Compass stacks up, I took it for a quick spin along the grounds at the Circuit of the Americas racetrack in Austin, Texas.
The Compass might be all-new compared to the previous version, but its underpinning and greasy bits are familiar. It rides on a lengthened version of the Renegade’s Small-Wide 4x4 chassis and uses the same 2.4-liter Multiair four-cylinder and transmission options. The longer wheelbase positions the Compass directly between the smaller Renegade and larger Cherokee. Four trim levels rage from bare bones to tricked-out. They are the Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk. Expect the Latitude, pictured here, to be the volume seller. So how’s the Compass drive? Keep reading to find out.

2017 Jeep Trailpass Concept
The 2018 Jeep Compass is completely new this year, ushering in a new era of Jeep history without the terribly awful Patriot and first-generation Compass. A new chassis, exterior design, and interior make the new Compass far superior to the outgoing model. Understandably then, we’re excited to see this – Jeep’s first special edition concept based on the 2018 Compass. It’s called the Trailpass and it uses Mopar and Jeep Performance Parts to gain off-road capability and a general improvement in awesomeness.
The Trailpass features a 1.5-inch suspension lift for better ground clearance. It also affords more room for larger wheels and tires. Jeep chose 18-inch wheels wrapped in Continental’s new all-terrain tire, the TerrainContact. The wheels also boast an orange-painted pocket that matches the tow hooks and badges.
The rest of the exterior is dressed up with an olive drab paint color, accented by a black hood and roof. The hood has olive drab graphics that add some character. The mirror caps also match the gloss black wheels for an added touch. Up top, the Compass has a roof rack from Thule that’s available through Mopar. Mounted inside are traction mats for getting out of sticky situations. Rock sliders protect the rocker panels under the doors, while looking like a factory piece.

2017 Jeep Compass By Mopar
Jeep has a long history with vehicle customization and personalization going back to the first CJ Jeeps produced after WWII. These days, instead of plows, seeders, and hay rakes, Jeep customers are looking for aftermarket equipment designed for improved off-road capabilities, everyday usability, and curb-size appearance. Mopar has been there for much of Jeep’s history but is now enjoying a renaissance in popularity thanks to a wide selection of dealer add-on parts. These accessories are able to be wrapped inside vehicle financing and are covered under warranty.
Mopar’s latest batch of parts fits Jeep’s newest product – the 2017 Jeep Compass. This two-row crossover slots between the Renegade and Cherokee, both in size and price. Its sleek, modern looks are arguably more attractive than the Cherokee, while still harking back to Jeep’s glory days.

2017 Jeep Compass
The Compass has long been Jeep’s leader in the compact crossover segment, slotted between the Patriot and Cherokee in terms of pricing and functionality. Now, 10 years after its initial introduction, Jeep is releasing the second-generation Compass for the 2017 model year. The U.S.-spec Compass debuted at the 2016 L.A. Auto Show and proved the Grand Cherokee’s aesthetics work well in a smaller package.
An all-new design brings a welcomed exterior update to the crossover, along with an interior modeled after the Cherokee. A total of 17 powertrain options will be selectively available to the 100-plus global markets Jeep is selling to. Here in the U.S., however, the Compass is solely powered by a revised version of FCA’s 2.4-liter Tigershark turbo-four. Two automatics and a manual transmission are available, as is front-wheel drive and two versions of Jeep’s Active Drive 4WD system.
The Compass will come in Jeep’s wide range of trim levels, including the base Sport, the mid-grade Latitude, the
minded Limited, and the off-road ready Trailhawk. This will mark the first time the Trailhawk trim will be offered on the Compass, telling of the Compass’ improved off-road prowess.
Jeep says the all-new Compass is capable of getting 30 mpg on the highway, though that’s likely with the FWD model. Production for the North American market will take place in Mexico. Sales will begin sometime in early 2017, though Jeep gave no official date during the L.A. Auto Show.
Jeep boss Mike Manley says, “Our all-new 2017 Jeep Compass enters an extremely important and growing segment worldwide, and does so with an unmatched list of attributes that includes benchmark 4x4 off-road capability, exceptional on-road driving dynamics, fuel-efficient powertrains, countless advanced technology and safety features, all wrapped in a premium, authentic Jeep design.”

Big Fuel Economy Improvements for the 2017 Jeep Compass, EPA Estimates
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is doubling down on SUVs, crossovers, and pickups these days, which means its CAFÉ rating stands to take a hit. Thankfully technology and better design is coming to the rescue. Jeep’s newest vehicle, the 2017 Compass, has a respectable jump in fuel economy over its outgoing (and very outdated) predecessor.
The EPA estimated the 2017 Jeep Compass equipped with 4WD will achieve 22 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. That represents a two-, five-, and three-mpg jump over the outgoing Compass. The EPA has not tested a FWD Compass as of this writing, but we expect to see even better fuel economy in that model.
Much of the Compass’ economy improvements can be attributed to its new version of the 2.4-liter Tigershark four-cylinder engine and nine-speed automatic transmission. The engine is upgraded with the new MultiAir2 valvetrain system, which uses electro-hydraulic mechanisms to operate the 16 overhead valves. The resulting power increase is also a welcomed addition, though it is a modest one. The 2017 Compass makes 180 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. That’s an eight-horsepower and 10-pound-feet improvement over the previous-generation Compass.
The in-house nine-speed automatic transmission comes only with 4WD models and is designed to “optimize engine output” and for “aggressive launches and smooth, efficient power delivery at highway speeds.” Those Compass models with the standard-fair FWD system will actually get a six-speed manual transmission. Optionally, a six-speed automatic transmission is offered and will likely be the volume-leading choice for average consumers.
The 2017 Jeep Compass will official hit showrooms in February of 2017 and be sold alongside the remaining previous-generation Compass models. Be sure to specify the new Compass to your salesman when asking about inventory. Once the EPA released its findings on the FWD Compass, we’ll bring you that information.

2017 Jeep Compass Arrives In L.A. with Grand Cherokee-inspired Design and Trailhawk Model
Launched in 2006 alongside the Patriot, the Compass was Jeep’s smallest modern crossover until the Renegade was launched in 2014. Come 2016, and the Compass received a much-deserved redesign that brings it into the 21st century design- and
wise. The crossover was initially unveiled in September 2016 in Brazil, but it has now made its North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
Criticized for not looking like a true Jeep and lacking the off-road capability of other vehicles from the brand, the Compass was overhauled into a crossover that appears to fit much better in the brand’s current lineup. Not surprisingly, it looks a lot like a shrunken Grand Cherokee, but that’s a good thing. Let’s face it, the SUV’s aggressive front fascia looks pretty hot and works well with the Compass’ narrower, yet still imposing front view. Around back, it has a more
inspired, European stance that reminds me of the Cherokee, but it’s a massive improvement compared to the dull rear end of the first-generation model.
For the first time, the Compass gets a Trailhawk model, which comes with unique fascias, a revised suspension, Hill Descent Control and Rock Mode with the Selec-Terrain system, which, and a 20:1 crawl ratio. Sweet!
Inside, there a pretty simple looking dashboard that feels modern and more upscale than the outgoing model. Jeep offers three center LCD screen sizes, starting with a five-inch unit for the base model. The seven- and 8.4-inch touchscreens are optional. The same goes for the instrument cluster, with a standard 3.5-inch display and an optional seven-inch unit. Jeep also offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, two apps that are mandatory for any automaker that wants to stay relevant.
In the U.S., the new Compass will get its juice from the familiar 2.4-liter "Tigershark" four-cylinder engine. The mill is rated at 180 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque, an eight-horsepower and 10-pound-foot update. Transmission choices include a six-speed manual with either two- or four-wheel-drive, a six-speed automatic for FWD versions, and a nine-speed auto for all-wheel-drive models only.

More Details Surface on 2018 Jeep Compass
The debut of the 2018 Jeep Compass has finally stirred the contents at the bottom of Jeep’s barrel, bringing new action to a stale segment. We’ve already told you everything Jeep official released for the U.S. media, but now sources in Brazil are posting more detailed info on the little cute ‘ute.
To be clear, the Compass just started production in Brazil for global markets. That’s why the news is coming from South America. The U.S.-spec Compass will be built in Mexico and make its official debut at the 2016 LA International Auto Show in November. Stay tuned for that.

Jeep’s Mike Manley Spills News on Compass, Patriot Replacement
Jeep Brand CEO Mike Manley recently divulged details regarding several of Jeep’s upcoming models, including the long-overdue replacement for the Compass and Patriot compact SUVs, known internally within Jeep as the C-SUV.
Speaking with Automotive News, Manley said the yet-unnamed crossover will debut in late September in Brazil, followed by a U.S. launch in November at the LA Auto Show. The small crossover will retain either the Compass or Patriot names and arrive in showrooms early within 2017. The Brazil debut was chosen to help celebrate FCA’s new Pernambuco assembly plant. The facility will also build the Renegade for Latin American counties.
Manley then divulged engineering news regarding the C-SUV’s structure. He says the new crossover will share the Renegade’s chassis, its FWD-based drivetrain, and the disconnecting rear axle on 4WD units. Engine choices are still unknown. Manley also revealed U.S.-spec versions will be built in Toluca, Mexico. This is a departure from the Compass’ current birthplace in Belvidere, Illinois – perhaps allowing Jeep to build the upcoming Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer SUVs.
Speaking of those, Manley mentioned the pair shouldn’t be thought of as separate vehicles, but rather a trim levels. This is counter to many reports suggesting the Grand Wagoneer would be lager than its less-luxurious brother.
The iconic Wrangler was also mentioned, with Manley saying, “To be honest with you, I’m delighted in the way it’s turning out, not just from a styling point of view, but from an overall point of what Wrangler stands for, I’m very pleased.” Manley admitted large changes are coming to the Wrangler in terms of fuel economy, weight, and aerodynamics. Thankfully he reassured Wrangler loyalists, saying, “…at the end of the day, it needs to be recognized as Wrangler.”

Jeep apparently has plans on consolidating is small crossover lineup as the Compass and Patriot reach the end of their life cycles. In fact, rumor has it the two vehicles will be replaced with a single crossover Jeep is currently calling the Compatriot. Nope, this is no April Fools.
The obvious meshing of the Compass and Patriot names produces a word which is defined as, “a fellow citizen or national of a country.” Seems fitting for a brand dripping with Americana.
Regardless of its name, the Compatriot news comes directly from Jeep’s director, Jim Morrison. In an interview with Car Advice, Morrison says the new model will fill the gap between the new 2015 Renegade and the larger Cherokee. This brings the number of Jeeps vehicles down by one, yet will assuredly offer higher levels of quality and refinement over the outgoing pair.
The new model is still some time away, as Morrison sheepishly admitted in the interview Jeep won’t likely be ready to announce the product until 2016 before its 2017 debut at dealerships.

At the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, Jeep will unveil the2014 Compass, which has received numerous upgrades over the 2013 model year.
On the exterior, the 2014 Compass received an updated exterior with an updated grille and headlamps and a new interior trim, plus a choice of two engines. Jeep will also offer new safety features, like front-seat-mounted side air bags and ParkView rear backup camera.
Jeep is also expanding Compass lineup with the addition of a new North trim level developed on the Sport trim line. It adds a series of cool elements like 17-inch aluminum wheels, deep-tint sunscreen glass and more.
The model will be put on sale across Europe in the second half of 2013. Next to the Limited version, Jeep will be also offering North and Sport trims. Prices will be announced at a later date.

After the Compass Black Look Concept unveiled in March at the Geneva Motor Show, Jeep has now unveiled the production version called the Compass Black Edition. As its name suggests, this special edition comes with a unique Black look that offers a more distinctive appearance and personality.
For the special edition model, Jeep has added black-gloss inserts, black-gloss headlamps and fog lamp surrounds, black roof rails and step pads, and a new set of 18-inch black-gloss aluminum wheels. Under the hood, the Compass Black Edition has received a 2.2-liter turbo diesel engine delivering a total of 163 hp and a peak torque of 236 lbs-ft.
This special edition will be offered with an active Freedom Drive I four-wheel-drive system featuring Lock mode. The system is designed to give drivers year-round assurance with the ability to handle rough weather and low-traction conditions as well as slick roads that come with rain and light snow.
Jeep has announced a series of three limited edition Altitude models, the second of them being based on the new Compass. The new Altitude series is the result of an old "Name My Ride" contest announced by the company back in January 2012. Due to the contest’s positive reaction - over 2 million Facebook fans - the company decided to create three special editions wearing the winning name: Altitude.
The new Compass Altitude will feature a distinctive black gloss finish for the seven-slot Jeep grille and headlamps, black roof rails, a black step pad and a set of exclusive 18-inch black gloss aluminum wheels wearing Firestone BSW all-season performance tires.
As standard equipment, customers will get power heated exterior mirrors and heated seats, remote start, continuously variable automatic transaxle, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls. The list of safety system will include elements like electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, Hill-start Assist (with manual transmission), and side-curtain air bags that cover all rows.
The new Jeep Compass Altitude will arrive at Jeep dealerships in May 2012 and will be priced from $22,190 for 4x2 models and $23,940 for 4x4 models.
At this year’s Geneva Motor Show Jeep will bring a very interesting concept car: the Compass Black Look Concept a prototype model that only serves the purpose of showing us how cool a Compass can become with just the right additions. The concept has received a number of styling cues and functional elements that transform the SUV into a very cool looking model. In fact, the Black Look Concept does look somewhat similar to the Jeep Compass by Mopar that was recently announced for the North American market.
The new Compass production-intent concept features exclusive black-gloss front-end accents, a step pad and 18" aluminum wheels painted in black-gloss. The front grille has also received black-gloss inserts - same treatment being used for the roof rails and step pads, the headlamp and fog lamp surrounds.
For the interior, Jeep added new front and rear bright sill covers, but also a new UConnect multimedia navigation and infotainment system with Bluetooth UConnect Phone and 9-speaker premium Boston Acoustics sound system.
The concept was also fitted with a 2.2-liter turbo diesel engine, one that delivers 163 HP and 236 lbs-ft of torque.
Of all the models in Jeep’s line-up, the one that doesn’t get a whole lot of love is the Compass. We know all about the Grand Cherokee, the Wrangler, and the Liberty, but the Compass isn’t given the same amount of attention.
Whatever reasons that may have, the new Mopar-tuned Compass "True North" model is giving the Compass some well deserved love and affection.
The enhancements done on the Compass are prevalently cosmetic, albeit a comprehensive one. On the outside, Mopar added plenty of modifications, including a new matte black-finished roof, wider wheel flares, black-headlamp and fog-lamp surrounds, rear fog lights, a new lower fascia, a new black grille with body color inserts, custom front and rear brush bars and custom rock rails, and a new set of 16" matte black alloy wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich All Terrain tires to go with a 2" lift kit from Rocky Road Suspensions.
Inside, the Mopar went to great lengths to give the Compass’ interior space with plenty of fine-tweaking. The most notable is a tie-up with renowned audio component manufacturer Kicker. For the ’True North’ model, the latter added a completely new audio system that includes front and rear speakers, an amplifier, a sub-woofer, and lift gate speakers. Outside of the audio system set-up, Mopar also added a custom center stack gauge pod that carries the pitch and roll inclinometer gauges. There’s also a new Mopar bright pedal kit, door-sill guards, a rear-cargo tray, a new shift knob and neoprene seats, all of which adds some serious flair and attitude to the Compass’ interior.
Availability for the Compass "True North" model has not yet been announced, although we expect to hear more about the details at the Chicago Auto Show this coming February.
In 2007, Jeep launched a vehicle that was an abomination of this classic American title. The name on the back of the car readCompass, but direction was the one thing Jeep just didn’t have with this particular model. Our guess is that Jeep had no idea in which direction to head in next.
The exterior was classic Chrysler, as they attempted to give crossover buyers some Jeep attitude, but instead insulted them with fake muscular looks. Sort of like a body builder on steroids, the previous-generation Compass was all show and nothing underneath.
The interior was plastered in cheap plastics and a design that would damage retinas. Basically, what buyers were forced to live with was a Dodge Caliber that was more expensive and useless. Hard to believe the Jeep actually kept the name for this next-generation model. However, nearly four years later, the Compass is back and that needle may finally be pointed in the right direction.

Chrysler has officially lifted the covers off of the 2011 Jeep Compass, giving the brand a nice little sidekick to their highly-touted flagship model, the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Combining an improved aesthetic design with a surprisingly efficient drivetrain – 23 mpg on the city and 29 mpg on the highway in all-wheel drive – and an affordable price tag, the 2011 Compass is looking more and more like a worthy contender in the compact SUV market.
“With the new 2011 Jeep Compass, we’ve applied the premium design cues of our award-winning new Grand Cherokee,” said Mike Manley, President and CEO - Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “Combined with new interior appointments, and refinements to the suspension and steering systems, Jeep Compass provides consumers the ultimate combination of styling, capability, fuel economy, efficiency, safety and value in the important compact-SUV segment.”
The 2011 Compass is going to be built at Jeep’s Belvidere Assembly Plant in Belvidere, Illinois. The vehicle is expected to arrive in Jeep showrooms across America in the coming weeks.

In celebrating the brand’s 70th anniversary, Jeep is rolling out special edition models for each of their SUVs. That’s right, all you Jeep-loving folks out there! Jeep has a special edition model coming out for the Compass, Grand Cherokee, Liberty, Patriot, and Wrangler SUVs.
All the anniversary models will be rolled out to dealerships by the first quarter of this year and will come in three different color finishes: Bronze Star, Bright Silver, and Black.
All upgrades on each of the models will only be limited to the interior set-up, which means that if you’re looking for something different on the exterior – with the exception of a few special badges and a new set of wheels - and what’s under their hood, then you’re going to be disappointed.
In any case, the anniversary editions do come with a lot of upgrades, which should make up for everything that was left status quo elsewhere.

Here we go again, more accelerator pedal problems from automakers. This time its Chrysler, who are recalling 34,000 Dodge and Jeep vehicles to fix sticking gas pedals made by the same supplier who was involved in the Toyota recalls.
Chrysler told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that 25,263 Dodge Calibers and 71 Jeep Compass vehicles were equipped with brake-override systems, but the Detroit automaker issued the voluntary recall anyway.
Chrysler believes that the defect started at CTS. At the factory the bearing housings were made to be too large. This problem was corrected in March 2006. The automaker thinks that only 30% of the vehicles recalled will suffer from the pedal problem.
It was Toyota that first blamed CTS for the accelerator pedal problem after 2.3 million cars were recalled this year. Toyota said many times that the pedals and the floor mats were the only reasons behind the problem. Yet, despite their claims, the NHTSA and two congressional committees are still looking for answers. They believe that the electronics may be at fault.
The NHTSA already fined Toyota $16.4 million for delaying the recall, stating that the company knew about the problem before the recall was announced.
Since the recalls, lawmakers have increased their attention on the NHTSA. Not surprisingly, automakers have also been quicker to issue recalls as well. The NHTSA has been more aggressive with defect probes. In fact, the organization issued one on Chrysler after customer complaints were made back in April.
Jeep has an image, and it’s time to exploit it. The company had an amazing seventeen-year run with the Cherokee because people wanted a vehicle that could do the work of a wagon, but didn’t look like one. Sure it was a capable go-anywhere off-roader, but many of them never left the pavement. This is what helped start the SUV craze.
No matter how much Jeep builds a car to take the tough stuff, there will always be customers who only use its ability to park on lawns. That’s why the Compass exists. It has all the image of a normal rough-and-ready Jeep, but in a package that on-road customers want. Jeep isn’t selling out its heritage (anyone remember the original Jeepster?) There are plenty of other companies making crossover vehicles out there. Jeep is just giving its loyalists a vehicle they can drive when their commute is reduced to paved roads.
Next to the Jeep Patriot Back Country Concept, Chrysler will also present the Compass Overland prototype at the Paris Auto Show.
