The legend returns after more than two decades!

The fifth generation of the iconic sports car, the 2020 Toyota Supra, marked the brand’s return to the U.S. market after 21 years (and in Japan after 17). Unveiled at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show, the Supra Mk. 5 goes on sale for the 2020 model with a high-performance six-cylinder engine and Toyota’s latest technology. Unlike its predecessor, the fifth-gen Supra wasn’t developed in-house by Toyota. The coupe is the result of a long collaboration with BMW, from which Toyota borrowed the chassis, engines, and transmission. Together with its motorsport division, Gazoo Racing, Toyota designed the exterior, the cabin, and retuned the suspension system. The new Supra is also the first vehicle developed by Gazoo Racing to go global. These cars were previously restricted to the Japanese market.

Drag Race: Lexus RC-F Vs Toyota GR Supra

The GR Supra is quick, but can it deal with the V-8 power of the Lexus RC-F?

Drag races are particularly interesting when they are between two very different cars. With this in mind, Sam CarLegion gives us another drag race between two very different Toyota products. On one side, we have the light and nimble Toyota GR Supra, while on the other, a Lexus RC-F that can best be described as a Japanese muscle car. Both cars send power to the rear axle, but that’s about all they have in common.

Retro JDM Comparison: Toyota Supra Vs Nissan 300ZX Vs Mazda RX-7

Three Japanese legends from the 1990s show us why they are some of the most desired Japanese sports cars, ever made

Japanese sports cars from the 1990s are some of the most recognized ones amongst the car culture. As described by Jeremy Clarkson, in a movie about the Nissan Skyline GT-R, Japan took over the world…and then lost it. While the latter is a topic for another time, what is true for the Skyline also goes for these three – the Toyota Supra, Nissan 300Z, and Mazda RX-7. Our colleagues from “EverydayDriver” - Todd Deeken and Paul Schmucker - take us on a spirited drive with these three JDM legends to determine the pros and cons of each and why they are so desired.

‘Officially Gassed – OG’ came up with an interesting series of races that involved three enthusiast cars – the Nissan R34 GT-R, the Toyota Supra, and the Nissan R35 GT-R Nismo. The R34 and the Supra are highly customized and make a lot more power than the stock output, but the R35 – the most modern of the lot – is bone stock and makes the least power. When we hear Toyota Supra, we often think of Paul Walker, as he drove an orange A80 Supra in the 2001 “The Fast and Furious.” Paul loved the Supra so much he bought one himself – a 1995 white A80 Supra. Paul’s personal Mk IV Supra was used for the final scene of the 2015 “Furious 7”, where a CGI version of the late actor drove into the distance. Now, TOM’s Racing and the Japanese magazine, Safari have teamed up in order to make a spiritual successor to the white Supra, based on the new A90 GR Supra.

The Toyota GR Supra is one of the most controversial vehicles of our time because of what it’s based on. Regardless of the platform it’s based on, one thing was made clear: the GR Supra is a very capable performance car. With a BMW-derived (but Toyota-improved) 3.0-liter, turbocharged, inline-six that makes 382 horsepower and 368 pound-feet (499 Nm) and a quick-shifting, ZF eight-speed automatic, it manages a 0 to 60 mph sprint in 3.9 seconds. The Toyota Supra in Forza Horizon 5 Is Going to Be Epic

The new Toyota Supra might not be as tunable as its predecessor in real life, but we’re willing to bet you can work it over nicely in Forza Horizon 5

The new Toyota Supra is nothing if not controversial. Meant to be a spiritual successor to the legendary Mk.3 Supra, it’s extreme ties to the BMW Z4 didn’t rub a lot of enthusiasts right. To this day, we’re still not sure if the new Supra is even as tunable as the Mk.3, at least not without some crazy 2JZ transplant, anyway. Regardless of what’s possible in real life, the new Toyota Supra is included as a day-one car in Forza Horizon 5 and, so far, it looks like it’ll at least live up to the reputation it’s meant to have in the game.

The Toyota GR Supra Might Offer Better Performance Than the GR86, But Is It A Better Toyota?

Here’s why the GR86 is a better Japanese sports car than the GR Supra

By now, it’s painfully obvious that Toyota isn’t interested in reliving the glorious 1990s. Back in those days, they had the SW20 MR-2/MR-S, the Celica GT-Four and SS3, and let’s not forget the venerable Supra Mk IV. However, sports cars cost a lot to develop and their market niche is insignificant compared to something like a Corolla. You can see why, nowadays, Toyota has two front-engine rear-wheel-drive sports cars and both of which are not pure Toyota products – the GR Supra and GR86. The latter, though, is more worthy of the Toyota badge and here’s why.

If I were to ask you the similarities between the Mercedes-AMG A45 S and the new Toyota Supra, you’ll quickly dismiss them as vehicles from different genres. One is a hot, practical hatch that can seat four, and one is a fun car that can seat just two. One is an all-wheel-drive, whereas the other is a rear-wheel-drive car. So, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that a person in the market for the A45 S won’t consider the Supra in most cases and vice versa.

But, Motor has uploaded a video on its YouTube channel where the host talks about the similarities between the German and the Japanese (well, half-Japanese), and surprisingly, there are quite a few.

We all know an love - well, not all - the A90 Supra and its 3-liter inline-six mill which, yes, comes from BMW, the co-developer of the Supra-Z4 project.

One year after the Supra’s unveil, Toyota decided to come up with a lighter, cheaper, and presumably equally fun version that’s animated by a four-cylinder mill. Turbocharging is still on the table, as well as a lighter platform for even nippier on-road behavior, despite the natural drop in power. For that, help from the aftermarket world is needed, and it just so happens that Manhart Racing is ready with open warms. The German tuner already presented a 450-horsepower upgrade for the Japanese sports coupé earlier this year, but it seems that the rambunctiousness isn’t over.

Just like the Supra, the GR Yaris Might Be More Powerful Than Toyota Says

It’s one dyno run, but there’s precedence on Toyota withholding actual output figures from its performance models

Remember earlier this year when it was revealed that the Toyota Supra actually produced more power than Toyota advertised? Well, it looks like it isn’t the only Toyota that’s more powerful than we thought.

A recent dyno test conducted on the GR Yaris revealed that Toyota’s firecracker of a hot hatch comes with a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine that produced more than Toyota’s claimed output of 268 horsepower and 272 pound-feet of torque. A video of the GR Yaris getting tested on a dyno shows just how much more power the turbocharged three-cylinder can crank out, and without dumping any spoilers, it’s a lot of extra power that we didn’t think the GR Yaris had at its disposal.

This Toyota Supra Mule Could Be Spitting the Tune of The BMW M3’s S58 Inline-Six

Is Toyota actually working on a Supra with BMW M3 power?

Toyota revived the Supra in 2019 after a 17-year hiatus and opted to use two BMW-sourced engines. The Supra is available with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with up to 255 horsepower and a 3.0-liter inline-six rated at up to 382 horsepower, both shared with a big variety of BMW models, including the 3 and 4 Series, the X5, and the Z4.

The top 382-horsepower engine, shared with M-badged Bimmers, was recently added for the 2021 model year, but word has it that Toyota wants an even more powerful mill. The folks over at Statesidesupercar released a video showing a Supra being driven hard on the Nurburgring, suggesting that this mule might feature the beefed-up inline-six engine from the newly launched BMW M3 and M4.

In short, it’s good on its own or a perfect base for those that start to wrench and modify the second a new sports car is delivered. We haven’t had the chance to get our hands on a new four-cylinder Supra, but our friends over at Car & Driver did. With the 2020 Toyota Supra being based so heavily on the BMW Z4, you can imagine that it had a very strong offering of aftermarket options by the time it launched. After all, just about anything that will mechanically improve the Z4 will improve the Supra too, right? Well, imagine for a moment, if you will, an A90 Toyota Supra with the S58 engine that’s found in the X3 and X4 M and the upcoming next-gen M3 and M4. That would make the Toyota Supra one powerful beast and force to be reckoned with. The best part? A new report straight out of Japan says it’s going to happen. That special Supra will be known as the Supra GRMN, and it’s going to be outlandishly rare.

Liberty Walk Has Created the Craziest Wide Body Kit for the 2020 A90 Toyota Supra

There’s a fine line between madness and genius and the jury’s still out on this one

We’ve seen Liberty Walk churn out wide body kits for Lamborghinis, Mustangs, Porsches, and BMWs, so we know what sort of awesomeness can come out of its workshops. Speaking of BMWs, the tuner’s latest work adds a racy flavour to the 2020 Toyota Supra but from where we’re sitting, it looks a tad over the top.

Check Out This Hand-Built 2JZ Toyota Supra Laying Down 2,033 Horsepower on the Dyno

That’s the old Supra, not the BMW Supra

Part of what made the previous generation Supra a cult car was the 2JZ engine’s versatility when it came to tuning. And that sort of reputation doesn’t simply wash away, not even when there’s a new Supra running around the block. And this video is perhaps the best testament of the A80 Supra’s legendary status.

All the orange bricks are genuine registered Lego bricks

The 2021 Toyota Supra Is Actually Good For Nearly 450 Horsepower

A new dyno test reveals excessive amounts of power from the 2021 Toyota Supra

Just a few weeks ago, Toyota announced that the 2021 Toyota Supra would be even more powerful (and faster) than the 2020 Supra. Then a week or so later, it did its best to justify sticking it to the folks that bought a 2020 model. Now, however, we’re finding out that the 2021 Supra (the inline-six model, of course) really puts down 388 horsepower at the wheels – 11 ponies more than Toyota’s newly advertised 377 horsepower figure. So, what does this really mean? Well, the true power of the 2021 Toyota Supra could be approaching the 450 horsepower mark at the crank, and that’s a huge bump in power.

Toyota Feels Justified in Making the 2021 Supra Much Better Than the 2020 Model

Toyota Feels Justified in Making the 2021 Supra Much Better Than the 2020 Model

Despite sticking it to those who bought a 2020 model, Toyota is happy with its decision

Not even a year after the 2020 Toyota Supra went on sale, Toyota made a surprise announcement that the 2021 model would be impressively better. So much better, in fact, that it six-cylinder model sees a 0.2-second improvement in 60-mph sprints, all thanks to a power increase of 47 horsepower and three pound-feet of torque. A cheaper, four-cylinder model will also go on sale with an impressive price tag and great performance as well. This was great news for those who waited to buy Toyota’s BMW-based halo car, but it kind of sticks it to people who jumped into dealers right away. Now, Toyota is trying to provide justification for its actions, and you’ll either agree completely or throw your phone.

Tuned Toyota Supra Vs BMW M4: Which One Wins the Drag Race?

This is one of the closest duels you would’ve seen in recent times

Look what Carwow has for us today; a BMW M4 and a BMW Supra. Sorry, Toyota Supra. The Supra was revived last year but it has received polarizing opinions. On paper, the M4 is a more powerful car, so these folks use a tuned version of the Toyota Supra that makes almost the same horses as the M4, but a lot more torque. Going purely by specs, the Supra should be winning, but does the M4 have what it takes to beat the Japanese-German wunderkind?

2020 Toyota Supra GR450 by Manhart Performance

This is the kind of Toyota Supra that we deserve

In the short time that it’s been around, the Toyota Supra has become an aftermarket darling. Tuners have taken to building programs for the A90 Supra with as much fervor as the nameplate commands. Even companies known for building kits for other automakers have turned their attention to the Supra.

Count Manhart Performance on that list. The German house that’s best known for tuning BMW models has prepared a comprehensive program for the Supra that includes an engine upgrade program, suspension tweaks, new wheels, and a host of aesthetic modifications to the exterior and interior. The result is a raunchy Japanese sports car that now lives up to the revered Supra nameplate.

Papadakis Racing’s 1000-HP Toyota Supra Is Coming Up Nicely

Not quite there yet, but so far, the progress is hefty

Europeans Get the Shaft on the 2021 Toyota Supra

Hope you weren’t expecting to get the updated, faster Supra anywhere in Europe…

While news outlets everywhere are praising the 2021 Toyota Supra for its updated powertrain and improved performance, Europeans are stuck looking in from the sidelines. Due to the ever-increasing and near-impossible to hit emissions regulations, Toyota is being forced to withhold all the updates that just made the 2021 Supra that much better here in the States. What can we say, Euro 6 emissions regulations are a real bitch when it comes to getting cool, fast cars.

Supras Collide as Supercar Blondie Pits The 2020 A90 Supra Against Its A80 Older Brother

Two Supras from different eras in the same place is a treat for all of us

For as long as the new Toyota Supra A90 is around, it will always be compared to its predecessors, most notably the Supra Mk4 A80 that was discontinued back in 2002. It’s a weight the current Supra will have to carry for a long time, in part due to the iconic status the Supra A80 in recent years.

Is it fair to compare both cars against each other? Probably not, but that comes with the territory of being a legacy nameplate. So, what do you do when you have a Toyota Supra A90 and a Toyota Supra A80 in the same place, at the same time? Outside of doing the obvious comparison test between the two cars, the only thing you can do is race them. Against each other.

YouTube personality Supercar Blondie recently got the chance to do just that in Dubai, and while we won’t spoil the results here in this space, we can at least say that the race wasn’t so much of an actual race, but more a celebration of just having two Supras from different eras lined up next to each other.
