2015 ELAN E4

2015 ELAN E4

The Elan E4 has once again consolidated Elan’s reputation as a builder of exciting performance-cruising sailing yachts, where neither performance, nor the cruising capabilities are left to compromise.

In addition to her elegant and sporty design, she features integrated toerails and flush hatches on the coachroof as well as new rotating plotter pods on the steering consoles, for total control over the elements. Her wide transom, twin rudder arrangement and chined hull deliver excellent control even at high heel angles. Her T-shaped keel ensures a lower center of gravity and improved righting moment, which in turn allows for a lighter displacement than would otherwise be possible.

The end result provides an exhilarating sailing performance, which one would usually expect only to find on much bigger boats. Maybe the best feature yet is how effortless she is to sail, even in challenging conditions.

2015 ELAN E3

Following the new Elan design the new E3 was developed with both racing performance and cruising comfort in mind.

The unique combination of T-bulb keel, twin-rudder steering and twin wheels, all rare features on a design of this size, really put her in the spotlight in her class. This is truly a multi-dimensional sailing boat. Researched and developed for the most demanding needs, it is designed to be sufficiently easy to sail to carry the badge of a starter boat, yet it is sophisticated enough in its sailing qualities to convince passionate sailors, delivering them the performance and general scope they might expect to find in a much bigger and more expensive boat. A unique combination of VOR70 inspired design and performance, combined with a generous cockpit and comfortable interior, the Elan E3 is definitely an exciting boat to sail.

2015 Bavaria CRUISER 33

2015 Bavaria CRUISER 33

Whether you want to spend time with family and friends on the open seas or set forth on a solo cruise, the BAVARIA CRUISER 33 was designed to satisfy your every need. Besides excellent sailing performance, the CRUISER 33 offers you unexpectedly generous space in the cockpit and – more importantly – below deck. Here the crew will find a saloon so comfortable and spacious that they would be forgiven for thinking they were sailing a much larger yacht – as many journalists have already commented during testing of the CRUISER 33. Farr Yacht Design and Design Unlimited have worked hard to maximise interior volume and ergonomics above deck, across the entire range, and the CRUISER 33 is testament to this design brief from the BAVARIA yard.

It is not uncommon to see a double berth with the dimensions of a king size bed in the guest cabin of a 33-foot yacht. But only a CRUISER 33 will offer you corresponding headroom, a great deal of movement and storage space to boot.

2015 Bavaria VISION 46

2015 Bavaria VISION 46

Bavaria Yachtbau has been building quality cruisers since Winifried Herrman and Josef Meltl launched the company back in 1978. In January of 2012, Bavaria showed us what it has learned over the last 30-plus years of building cruisers and taking customer feedback with the release of the Vision 46. The Vision line is meant to represent the wish lists of cruisers the world over, and help bring mega-yacht features to the masses who don’t have millions to spend on (or shelter in) a boat. As it turns out, this approach worked quite well for Bavaria: Cruising World named the Vision 46 “Boat of the Year” in its 2013 full-size cruiser category, so the factory must be doing something right.

2015 Bavaria VISION 42

2015 Bavaria VISION 42

Introducing the Bavaria Vision 42, available in 2015; the first addition to the Vision series and little sister to the popular Vision 46. Bavaria Yachts designed the Vision line in partnership with Farr Yacht Design and Design Unlimited to serve as a relaxed cruising platform with some dock appeal. They wound up with a sleek-looking boat that follows traditional cruiser design, but with a decidedly modern flair. Many of the best features are under the hood, as it were, and serve to make the boat as handy as possible during sail evolutions or close-quarters maneuvers – attributes right at the top of my list when I think of truly relaxed sailing.

Dubourdieu Partners With André Courrèges To Launch Designer Boat At Cannes

Dubourdieu Partners With André Courrèges To Launch Designer Boat At Cannes

Carmakers partnering with fashion design houses isn’t a new thing. Motorcycle brands have also done the same at one point or another. But boat manufacturers rarely venture into these kinds of partnerships and when do, it’s almost always of the one-off variety. On that note, that’s exactly what French manufacturer Dubourdieu is doing after announcing a partnership with fashion designer André Courrèges to create a one-off boat called “White Ocean.”

The full scope of details surrounding White Ocean has yet to be revealed, but Dubourdieu has given us enough information to give us an idea of what to expect. According to the French custom boat builder, White Ocean’s design will inspired by one of those classic New England picnic boats. At least we can rule out any sort of funkiness with the design. The boat will have its share of top-grade materials, highlighted by teak decks, mahogany cabinetry, and bespoke towels, crew uniforms and beach bags, all of which will carry the unmistakable logo of the Courrèges fashion brand.

That’s as much information as Dubourdieu has told us, which means that details on the engine, top speed, and if Duboourdieu decides to sell it, price, are all expected to be revealed closer to the boat’s launch at the 2015 Cannes Yachting Festival in September 2015.

Knowing as much as I do about Dubourdieu - the company is one of France’s oldest boat builders and is actually celebrating its 210th anniversary in 2015 - I expect it to unveil a new one-off boat that will imbibe all the wonderful characteristics of the company. That’s the kind of cache and trust you earn for doing something as long as Dubourdieu has in building custom boats.

JFK's Old Racing Boat Headed To The Auction Block

JFK’s Old Racing Boat Headed To The Auction Block

A 22-foot sailing boat once owned by former US president John F. Kennedy is headed to the auction block at the Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Texas. As you can expect, the boat doesn’t come cheap as the starting price for bids is at $100,000.

The historical boat, called the Flash II, traces its historical ties with Kennedy back in the 1930s when the assassinated former US president and his brother, Joe, raced the vessel in a number of regattas during the decade, including several victories in the Nantuckey Sound Fleet racing circuit.

Kennedy eventually took ownership of the boat in 1940 but was forced to sell it when he joined the Navy during World War II. Since then, the boat has had several owners, not to mention several encounters with law enforcement authorities, before ending up in the hands of current owner Frank Harvey, who bought the boat back in 2005.

After a decade of ownership, Harvey’s putting the boat back on the market where it will be part of Heritage Auctions’ lot during the auction on May 18, 2015 in Dallas, Texas, the same city where its one-time owner was assassinated.

According to Mark Prendergast of Heritage Auctions, the boat is not only sea-ready, but is also a unique piece of American maritime history, thanks in large part to its ties with one of the most beloved US presidents of all time.

If that connection is established ahead of the auction date, you can be sure that its starting price of $100,000 is going to get blown out of the water, no pun intended.
