Toyota Gives the 2018 Land Cruiser A Modern Flair for Frankfurt

An old favorite gets some modern updates

The Toyota Land Cruiser is about as iconic as vehicles come, so it’s a big deal when something changes. For 2018 in global markets, the Land Cruiser is getting a few appearance upgrades and a redesigned dashboard – both in an effort to keep this go-anywhere, three-row SUV flying off showroom floors. Toyota debuted its updated Land Cruiser at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show ahead of its on-sale date later this year.

The Land Cruiser’s reputation is rooted in reliability and its rugged dependability in off-road situations, often far from civilization. It makes sense, then, that Toyota boasts about the SUV being “easy to maintain and repair” right in its press materials. You won’t find that in a Land Rover’s press kit. While easy trail repairs isn’t the Land Cruiser’s best selling point in North America where customers view it as a status symbol, many of the 190 countries place an extreme value on making a round trip when leaving the house. Of course, the 2018 Land Cruiser is more than just reliable transportation. It offers plenty of luxury and creature comforts, too. Let’s check out what changes Toyota has made for 2018. Perhaps some of these will even make it to the U.S.-spec Land Cruiser, as well.

Believe It or Not, Toyota Won’t Let You Resell Your 2022 Land Cruiser 300!

The company makes you sign an agreement when purchasing the Land Cruiser, and if you break it, you won’t be allowed to buy another Toyota

Toyota launched the 13th-gen Land Cruiser a couple of months back. Moniker’d the Land Cruiser 300, this new generation succeeds the Land Cruiser 200 that was in production for 14 years. It is, however, forbidden fruit in the U.S. as the company has pulled the plug on it here. Just as the hype of the new SUV was dying down, a report by Creative311 has brought it back to the headlines.

According to the publication, Toyota is asking the owners not to sell their SUV within 12 months of purchase, citing global security. In fact, the company is even making the owners sign the dotted line and make it a contractual agreement. How about that!

Luxurious Off-Roader Toyota Land Cruiser Celebrates Its 60+ Years In The US

Toyota simply loves to celebrate important dates with heritage editions of its cars. Especially ones involving the almighty Land Cruiser (per my humble opinion the best vehicle on Earth, like ever). Revealed ahead of the official live debut at the Chicago Motor Show next month, the Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition celebrates 60+ years of the Land Cruiser in the US. Although the Land Cruiser 200 is a decade old, it is still very much at the pinnacle of luxurious world of off-roaders. The Heritage Edition did gain a few interesting differentiating touches, but in essence, it is still very much the same body-on-frame truck with a two-speed transfer case and selectable low gear that it was a decade ago.

During its ten year tenure on the market, Toyota celebrated a number of anniversaries and important dates with the Land Cruiser 200. In 2013, Toyota said that the “Land Cruiser is the Luxurious Descendant of A Proud 50-Year Off-Road Heritage” In 2014 Toyota said that the “Land Cruiser Luxury SUV Doesn’t Look A Day Over 50” In 2016 Toyota mentioned that the “Land Cruiser Celebrates 60th Year in America with Ultimate Capability and Luxury” And, finally, in 2019 - “Land Cruiser Heritage Edition Celebrates 60+ Years as SUV Icon”

Toyota Gives the 2018 Land Cruiser A Modern Flair for Frankfurt

Toyota Gives the 2018 Land Cruiser A Modern Flair for Frankfurt

It’s still the same, old-school SUV underneath

When’s the last time you’ve heard an automaker claim its latest vehicle is “easy to maintain and repair?” That’s exactly what Toyota said about its revised 2018 Land Cruiser, which makes its debut at the 2017 Frankfort Motor Show. It makes sense, after all, since the Land Cruiser is one of the most prolific vehicles in the world today. It’s sold in 190 countries worldwide and has a reputation of reliability and go-anywhere capability. Here in the U.S., the Land Cruiser is more of a status symbol, regulated to a few thousand sales a year with a fat asking price. Elsewhere, the Land Cruiser is viewed as a utilitarian beast that doesn’t mind trekking through foreboding countryside.

The Land Cruiser’s updates are mostly cosmetic. The front clip is new, the rear end is reworked, and the dashboard has been rearranged for better functionality. Toyota kept utility and functionality at the forefront, too, with impressive approach, breakover, and departure angles, along with 8.4-inches of ground clearance. Even the headlights were redesigned to make them more impervious to trail damage. Inside, the 4WD controls are placed on the center stack within easy reach of the driver. The greasy bits carry over unchanged, including the turbodiesel and two gasoline options. Toyota is dropping the gasoline option for Australia, however. Nevertheless, let’s take a dive into what’s new for the 2018 Toyota Land Cruiser. Keep in mind, this isn’t the U.S.-spec version with its 5.7-liter V-8. We expect that to come later in the year with these same visual updates.

Toyota Land Speed Cruiser Sets World Speed Record

Toyota Land Speed Cruiser Sets World Speed Record

Chasing the title of fastest SUV requires serious horsepower

Toyota has a rich history of building outlandish one-off projects, but none of them can match the wild nature of this Land Cruiser. Built to break the world record for the fastest SUV, Toyota named this three-row, body-on-frame beast the Land Speed Cruiser. The play on works helps the reality of the project sink in. Engineers had to make a 5,800-pound SUV perform like a sports car in order to break the 211-mph top speed record in the SUV category. The stock 5.7-liter V-8 was heavily modified to make more than 2,000 horsepower, while the suspension was given new life with high-dollar speed parts.

The Land Cruiser’s interior also received a handful of updates like a FIA-certified racing seat and roll cage, along with information displays for keeping tabs on the mechanicals. Surprisingly, the rest of the interior remains factory. The wood grain and leather steering wheel, dashboard, and center console are all intact. A new shifter replaces the stock unit, however, as Toyota updated the gearbox with a new racing transmission designed for the extra power and speed. And all but the driver’s seat was removed for weight reduction. Toyota then put former NASCAR driver Carl Edwards behind the wheel at the Mojave Air and Space Port in California. So how fast did the Land Speed Cruiser go? Keep reading for the official speed.

2016 Toyota Land Speed Cruiser

2016 Toyota Land Speed Cruiser

Fancy a 2,000-horsepower, 220-mph Toyota?

Using a nameplate that dates back to 1951, the Land Cruiser has been one of Toyota’s best-selling SUVs for decades. Rugged on the outside, comfortable on the inside, and motivated by powerful engines and reliable a all-wheel-drive system, the current-generation Land Cruiser continues to impress despite being almost a decade old. Luckily, the Japanese brand just introduced a new facelift for the 2017 model year, keeping the SUV fresh for a few more years.

Even though the Land Cruiser received quite a few nips and tucks, it’s not that much more powerful than the outgoing model. Now, toyota set out to prove that the SUV can pack a lot of heat, and unleashed the Land Speed Cruiser concept at the 2016 SEMA Show. As the name suggests, the SUV is about tremendous speed, which goes hand in hand with horsepower. But, this isn’t the kind of beefed-up Toyota you get from TRD. This SUV is significantly more powerful than every supercar you can buy in 2016. Yup, that means thousands of horsepower.

Designed and built by the company’s motorsport technical manager Chuck Wade and his team of skilled engineers, the Land Speed Cruiser is actually a 2017 Land Cruiser body on a significantly redesigned chassis with a completely redesigned drivetrain system. Wade says that the brand meddled with every single component, which made getting the body back onto the heavily modified frame a very difficult task. This speaks volumes of the intense work that was put into this project, but we’ll talk more in the review below.

6x6 Toyota Land Cruiser Goes Off-Roading: Video

6x6 Toyota Land Cruiser Goes Off-Roading: Video

The legend gets even more capability

The Toyota Land Cruiser is without a doubt one of the greatest off-road vehicles ever made. It ranks right up there with the Land Rover Defender, Jeep Wrangler, and Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen when it comes to prowess over unpaved surfaces. But even with so much natural talent, there are some out there who feel the need to take it even further. But what do you do if a lift kit, meaty tires, skid plates, and lockers aren’t enough? Time to go 6x6.

That’s the solution seen here in this one-minute, 23-second video. The star of the show comes from NSV and Multidrive Technology, which blessed the Toyota with an extra axle to handle the rough stuff. The result looks OEM in quality, not to mention incredibly capable.

The 6x6 is powered by a 4.0-liter V-6 engine, which is supercharged to 398 horsepower and 364 pound-feet of torque. The powerplant mates to a dual-range, five-speed manual transmission. If you’re interested in picking one up for yourself, you can also get it with a 4.5-liter turbodiesel and automatic gearbox.

Looks like a lot of fun. But for some reason, I can’t help but wish it came with the option for Hellcat power…

2014 Toyota Land Cruiser 70

2014 Toyota Land Cruiser 70

Toyota’s commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Land Cruiser 70 by doing something it’s never done before. The Japanese automaker is reintroducing the model, except that it’s going to be limited to its local market. I don’t know if I speak for everybody here, but I’m completely jealous that Japan’s getting exclusive dibs on the re-released Toyota Land Cruiser 70. All 200 planned models, to be exact. It doesn’t seem fair, does it?

To make things interesting, Toyota’s also producing a double-cab pickup version of the Land Cruiser 70, which will also be limited to the Japanese market.

Granted, I’m not that excited about the pickup version as I am about the traditional enclosed body classic. The latter model speaks to a level of nostalgia you don’t see in today’s models anymore. I’m counting those retro-inspired ones, too.

If I knew that Toyota was considering re-releasing the model due to widespread requests in Japan, I’d be screaming for the model to go Stateside. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that Toyota will do that, leaving me with no other choice than to just drool over these photos. Such a shame.

2014 Toyota Land Cruiser

2014 Toyota Land Cruiser

If you look into the history of the Toyota brand, the Land Cruiser has been around for more than half a century. It has long proven how capable it is on whatever terrain you throw at it. Where a Range Rover would fall apart, crying out for for maintenance, the Land Cruiser would continue to do its job. When it comes to reliability, the Japanese sure do have some secret formula.

For the 2013 model year, Toyota gave the Land Cruiser a mild makeover. New styling elements were added upon an already awesome-looking machine. The interior too was overhauled, with more standard features than before, while a rather potent V-8 engine provided the muscle required to take on the worst of rugged terrains. Added safety features and driver aides all made it easy to drive.

For 2014, Toyota has made subtle changes to the Land Cruiser. It still boasts the 5.7-liter, V-8 engine and a handsome-looking exterior, but the automaker has now standardized all optional features into one attractive package. So, the 2014 Land Cruiser will be available in just one trim level.

Vehicular Court: Icon Accuses Hot Wheels of Ripping Off FJ40 Design

Vehicular Court: Icon Accuses Hot Wheels of Ripping Off FJ40 Design

Recently, we held a court session where we determined that the accusations that Arrinera used a kit car to produce its Venocar prototype were false. At the same time, we did find Arrinera 100 percent guilty of completely ripping off Ferrari’s design scheme, but Arrinera was allowed to walk free based on the copycat precedent set by every major automobile manufacturer in the world.

Now we have a new case to present. The Plaintiff is Icon, a small business that specializes in taking SUVs and making them bad-ass off road buggies. The Defendant is Mattel, a multi-billion dollar toy company and manufacturer of Hot Wheels die cast cars.

There are two details to be hammered out in this edition of Vehicular Court.

Case No. 1: Did Mattel directly rip off Icon’s FJ40 image and just very lightly Photoshop it to create its press release photo for the Die Cast Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40?

Case No 2: Is the final production Hot Wheels FJ40 a direct replica of the Icon FJ40?

2010 Toyota Landcruiser Prado Three Door

2010 Toyota Landcruiser Prado Three Door

While we here in the U.S. along with drivers from around the world are still waiting for a practical and sporty compact coupe like SUV, the Japanese automaker Toyota has just answered that call for the Australian market when they released the Land Cruiser Prado Three Door. However Toyota traditionalists should not worry because the quality car builder will sell their new truck alongside the old five door model starting this November.

The Land Cruiser Prado is a compact version of Toyota’s full size Land Cruiser SUV and the upcoming three door model wears the same stylish face as the of the five door, with its oversized headlights that are stretched over and around the front fenders, while the chrome framed and stripped vertical bar grill gives the front end more of a three dimensional feel. The three door Prado’s matching boxed fenders scream fun while the six lug hubs, multi piston calipers and spare tire on the trunk let you know that the Prado means business.

However, the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado isn’t all about being cute, because of its shorter wheelbase the off road vehicle actually exhibits a higher break over angle and allows the SUV to travel over steeper peaks than the larger five door model. Combine that with the sectioned truck’s reduced curb weight, which leads to improved real world acceleration as well as fuel economy.

Wald 200 Land Cruiser Sports Line Black Bison Edition

Wald 200 Land Cruiser Sports Line Black Bison Edition

Sometimes there is just nothing nicer than a black on black truck that just looks mean, that is exactly what the Black Bison treatment will do to any SUV. If until now when you heard the words Wald International you only thought of luxury brands like Lexus, Infiniti or Mercedes Benz, then think again. Wald’s Black Bison Land Cruiser is the first Toyota to be tuned by the Japanese company.

The Land Cruiser is completely transformed into a menacing beast. Everything from the vents in the front fenders to the rear wing make the Black Bison look like an SUV that you wouldn’t want to meet in a dark alley. The aero kit consists of a new front bumper with signature integrated fog lamps, bold side skirts, a rear apron with integrated diffuser, the roof mounted wing and new quad-exhaust system. Not to mention the Mahora M11C 20 inch wheels that complete the murdered out look of the black on black beast.

Even though Wald made no modifications to the powertrain, the Toyota’s 5.6 Liter V8 when heard through the new high performance exhasut, is more than enough to match the agressive exterior of the Landcruiser Black Bison, not bad for the company’s first attempt at tuning a Toyota.
