These 10 Fast ‘Fuel-Powered’ Pickup Trucks Shouldn’t Be Forgotten When Electric Trucks Take Over

Here are 10 fast non-electric pickup trucks that we’ve seen over the years

We talk about how the upcoming electric pickup trucks are fast and heavy on performance. Trucks like the Tesla Cybertruck, the Rivian R1T, the GMC Hummer EV, etc. are all quicker than some of the famous supercars of this era. Although internal combustion-engined trucks aren’t known to be ‘fast’, there are a handful of them that could are quite agile. Doug DeMuro decided to list 10 such cool fast trucks, and we agree with every entry on this list.

2021 Shelby F-150

The Shelby F-150 comes with more than 750 horses, an upgraded suspension setup, and aesthetic upgrades inside and out, all for over $100,000

Given the growing popularity of expensive trucks, Shelby has come with an F-150 iteration of its own. It comes with changes inside and out, and also under the hood. The Shelby F-150 now makes close to 800 horses! It also comes with an upgraded suspension setup. If you are disappointed the standard F-150 Raptor didn’t come with a power boost for the 2021 model year and you don’t want to wait for the Raptor R, this will float your boat. The only catch is that it has breached into the six-digit price bracket.

Throttle House Clearly Explains Why the 2020 Shelby F-150 Super Snake is the Truck Every Man Needs

770 horsepower should be enough, but (luckily) there’s more

Pickup trucks made a name for themselves through workhorse character and hauling ability but who says they can’t boost one’s ego from time to time?

Certainly not Shelby, who jammed 770 horsepower inside the F-150 Super Snake which we believe is, actually, the only genuine competitor for the incoming Hellcat-powered Ram TRX.

2016 Shelby Baja 700

2016 Shelby Baja 700

Shelby is well known for tuning some of the fastest Mustangs on the planet, but the company founded by Mr. Carol himself also dabbles in trucks as well. Meet Shelby’s latest performance package for the 2011-2014 Ford F-150 Raptor.

Officially known as the Shelby Baja 700, the heavily modified Raptor will be extremely limited in number, with only 50 trucks slated for construction. What’s more than just its limited supply, is its ridiculous horsepower output.

Shelby takes the Raptor’s 411-horsepower, 6.2-liter V-8 and bolts on a 2.9-liter Whipple supercharger within the V, along with a few other goodies to produces a whopping 700+ horsepower.

“In the best Shelby tradition, we took our already high-performance 575-horsepower Shelby Raptor and made it even more capable,” said Shelby American Vice President of Operations Akos J. Feher.

Along with the horsepower upgrade, Shelby ups the ante with several other upgrades as well, so keep reading for the full run-down.

Video: The 2013 Shelby Ford F-150 SVT Raptor Gets a Nice Workout From Motor Trend

Video: The 2013 Shelby Ford F-150 SVT Raptor Gets a Nice Workout From Motor Trend

Okay, so we all loved the Ford F-150 SVT Lightning from the 1990s and 2000s, but it was never really a useful truck. You couldn’t take it off-road; well, we’ll rephrase that to you shouldn’t have tried taking it off-road; and it wasn’t much for towing either. So, it was basically a sports car with a bed...

After discontinuing the SVT Lightning, following its 2004 run, Ford went to task developing a new SVT pickup that was everything the Lightning wasn’t. And now we have the SVT Raptor: a jacked up F-150 with up to 12.1 inches of suspension travel, a snarling V-8 engine with 411 horsepower, and likely one of the best-balanced four-wheel-drive systems in a pickup.

Well, being car lovers, what else could we ask for? For Shelby to get its tuning hands on this beast it push it to extremes so obscene that the FCC is investigating it, of course — 575 horsepower, to be precise, thanks to a supercharger and some other tasty bits. Unfortunately, Shelby is limiting this supercharged, baja monster to only 100 units, so you’d better get to buying before supply runs out.

For those of you that can’t swing the $60k-plus required to own this Shelby-tuned pickup, World’s Fastest Car Show from Motor Trend has a test video (above) that at least sheds some light on what you’re missing out on.

You know as well as we do that Justin Bell wouldn’t take the Shelby down a six-lane highway in Southern Cali and tell us how smooth it runs. Rather, he opted to thrash the Shelby SVT Raptor in a more fitting manner by taking it to the Vegas Off-Road Experience (VORE) and gave it the hammering that Shelby intended it to have. We’re not too sure if Shelby saw the video yet, but It either loved the fact that it got a good workout and video evidence of its performance, or it billed Mr. Bell for the massive wear and tear on the suspension, tires, engine and brakes.

Either way, at least we get a nice look at this rare Shelby rig. Enjoy!

2013 Shelby Raptor

2013 Shelby Raptor

Though Ford decided not to offer any big unveilings at the 2013 New York Auto Show, Shelby American came with a tuning kit based on one of its pickups, the 2013 Ford SVT Raptor. The kit adds enhanced power and handling, and a specially designed exterior and interior.

Shelby installed a 2.9-liter Whipple supercharger onto the standard 6.2-liter V-8 engine in the Raptor and a new Shelby Stinger exhaust system. As a result, the engine’s output jumps from the standard and already awesome 411 horsepower up to a total of 575 horsepower. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox that transfers the power to all four wheels. Additionally, an "Off-Road" mode that calibrates the transmission, stability and traction control systems for optimal operation at high speeds off road.

The package includes a set of Shelby side fender heat extractors to keep the engine cool and make the truck look downright sweet. Also included for the exterior is your choice of one of three Shelby graphics packages – Traditional, Shelby Splash and Shelby Super Snake – so everyone knows that this isn’t any old SVT Raptor.

On the inside, the base kit comes with a custom interior that includes two-tone leather with contracting stitching, a serial numbered dashboard badge, and boost and fuel pressure gauges to make sure everything is within spec.

There are also a number of optional items you can add to the base kit, for a fee of course. First up is an optional set of customs wheels wrapped in 35-inch Goodrich All-Terrain tires, a Shelby roof-mounted light bar, front and rear Shelby-spec bumpers, a spare tire and bed-mounted spare tire carrier. More options are coming down the pipe soon.

The update package is priced starts at $17,995 – a relative bargain – and will be limited to only 100 units, so get to ordering.

2011 Ford Cargo "Shelby Mustang"

2011 Ford Cargo "Shelby Mustang"

Some people really do have a twisted sense of imagination, don’t they?

We really don’t have any idea how somebody can dress up a Ford Cargo truck using the iconic Shelby Mustang as in inspiration. The people behind this piece of work, which was on display at the 2011 Fenatran Show in Sao Paulo, Brazil, apparently thought that it would be a fantastic idea to do just that.

So, against seemingly every fiber of sense known to man, they went and dressed up this Cargo 1932 with an orange paint finish and matching black stripes as an ode to the Shelby Mustang. Imagine all the brain cells that were roasted during this build. Of course, a creation like this features more than just a sketchy color scheme; it also needs a special new body kit - check - a dressed up interior - check - and a new suspension set-up - check. Heck, even the rear of the truck was designed to look exactly like the rear of a Shelby!

Speaking of the interior, the people behind this Shelby-inspired Ford Cargo saw fit to add black decoration materials on the interior, as well as a new set of sports seats and a sports steering wheel.

Behind all the questions surrounding Optimus Prime’s bastard cousin of a truck, here’s one thing we do know: When Carroll Shelby started his line of special Mustangs, this wasn’t what he had in mind.
