Peugeot Enters The Pickup Truck Segment With All Guns Blazing

Peugeot finally woke up from its slumber and decided to enter the pickup truck market. The French automaker has revealed its latest creation called the Landtrek. Peugeot isn’t a new player in the truck market and has had a fair share of haulers back in the day, such as the 504 and the 404 trucks.

Even now, it sells the Pick Up in a few African markets. Now, however, it has “returned” with a sincere effort in the form of the Landtrek. Instead of testing the waters by launching just a couple of variants, Peugeot has decided to go full throttle by introducing the truck in three different body styles and two different drive configurations.

PSA Group Confirms New Pickup In "Push to Pass" Growth Plan

“One new car, per region, per brand, per year” signals big things from PSA

PSA Peugeot Citroën is picking itself up and preparing for an all-out assault on the global auto industry with a slew of new vehicles coming from each of its three subsidiary brands. This includes a one-ton pickup truck within a crop of eight light-duty commercial vehicles.

This is all part of PSA’s new “Push to Pass” growth plan for the next five years. Between now and 2021, the automaker is set to debut 26 new passenger cars, along with the commercial vehicles, meeting its goal of “one new car, per region, per brand, per year.” The ambitious goal is said to “transform the company in order to unleash its full potential.”

Reports suggest PSA won’t be developing the pickup from the ground up, but rather will partner with another automaker. Which automaker is still unknown, but Toyota is a likely possibility given the pair’s past relationship. In that case, PSA could badge-engineer the Hilux pickup for its own.

Adding to the unknown is PSA’s entry into the U.S. While America’s truck market might be hard to crack, especially with a rebadged Toyota, bringing brands like DS, Peugeot, and Citroën is actually feasible, despite the French automaker’s 27-year absence from North America.

Regardless of what happens in the U.S., it seems PSA is on the rise with a solid plan of growth. Perhaps we’ll see PSA enter the market down the road, even if not within the next five years.

2011 Peugeot Hoggar

When you mention the name ’Peugeot’ the first things that come to your mind are numbers like 207, 307, 407 - none of which can be described as ’off-road’ vehicles. In as much as Lexus was synonymous with the ’supercar before the LF-A came along, Peugeot is not one of those brands you associate with images of a pick-up. But just like Lexus, that doesn’t mean that the French automaker won’t think outside the box, which is precisely what they did when they revealed to the Brazilian market, the Hoggar - the company’s first pick-up.

The Hoggar is based on the 207 platform and offers a a load volume of 1,151 liters and a payload of up to 742kg. It will go on sale on the 15th May, with three trim levels and two engine sizes: a 1.4-liter engine and a similar 1.6 liter variant.

Press release after the jump.
