Jeep and Ford take the Wrangler and Bronco’s rivalry to the next level

The revived Bronco came out all guns blazing to step up to the apex predator of the segment. The companies have been trying to go one-up against their respective rival, but it still seems to be as close as ever.

Jeep has made a move once again by coming up with an Xtreme Recon package for the Wrangler. To quote from George Villiers’ play from the 17th century - “Ay, now the Plot thickens very much upon us.” Indeed!

Willys models in Jeeps have a different fan-base altogether, so we’ll let Jeep off the hook for this one. The pickup truck comes with a lot of off-road equipment in this edition, and it will be an exciting one for the folks who found the standard Gladiator a little too plain-Jane as per Jeep’s standards. Will this qualify to become a standard trim in the future?

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Xtreme-Trail Rated Is The Yellow You Need To Bust Your Blues

If you peep into the Mopar directory, you will see numerous packages and accessories for almost all the products owned by FCA. These packages are hugely popular with the SUV and truck owners.

Recently, it was revealed that a Wrangler owner spends an average of $800 on additional stuff from the factory itself when buying the vehicle. Jeep decided to capitalize on this even more and came up with a special edition for the Wrangler called Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Xtreme-Trail Rated.

Essentially, it is a culmination of a few packages that Jeep already has to offer along with a new yellow body paint. But, to maintain exclusivity, the company has capped the production to just 100 examples. Also, it will be available only in Mexico! Por qué harías eso, Jeep?

There’s a Pretty Sweet One-Off Jeep Gladiator Sitting at a Dealership in Wisconsin - You Have to See it

For all you Jeep fans out there, this will ring in some nostalgia

The Jeep Gladiator is an icon in its own sense. Folks have waited for a Jeep pickup truck for over three decades, and Jeep finally gave us one in the form of the 2020 Gladiator. We love the Jeep Gladiator through and through and have explained its versatility profusely. However, we would have preferred some retro and vintage touches for the old-school purists. Not in the mainstream variants, but perhaps, as an optional body and decal kit at the dealership level. It looks like a dealership based out of Wisconsin heard our wishes and has sent the Gladiator back to the 1970s for a makeover.

2017 Jeep Wrangler Night Eagle

2017 Jeep Wrangler Night Eagle

European Jeep customers get more blacked-out trim choices

Jeep is bringing several vehicles to the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, including a few special edition models. In that mix is the Grand Cherokee Night Eagle, and this, the Jeep Wrangler Night Eagle. Like the Grand Cherokee, this special edition Wrangler is treated to the popular blacked-out theme, with Jeep attaching Gloss Black accenting and unique graphics to the outside, while the interior is worked over with upgraded leather seats.

This isn’t the first Night Eagle edition Jeep we’ve seen. Aside from this year’s Grand Cherokee version, Jeep had already launched Night Eagle editions of the Cherokee and Renegade over the last two years. All four models now share similar attributes. But before diving into what makes the Wrangler Night Eagle different, let’s look at what remains unchanged.

The Wrangler continues to be available in both two- and four-door versions. European-spec Wrangler uses different front and rear bumpers, along with a spare tire cover, and different OEM tires. The Wrangler is also powered by Jeep’s 2.8-liter CDI four-cylinder turbodiesel as standard. It makes 200 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque. Optionally, the familiar 3.6-liter Pentastar gasoline V-6 is available and makes 284 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are mated to Jeep’s five-speed automatic transmission.

The Wrangler’s 4WD system carries over unchanged, of course, as it has for nearly a decade. The non-Rubicon Wrangler like this Night Eagle use Jeep’s Command-Trac NV241 part-time, two-speed transfer case with manual shifting. It has a 2.72:1 crawl ratio and locks the engine’s torque split at 50/50 for the front and rear axles. The rear differential utilizes Jeep’s Trac-Lok limited-slip system, which helps provide power to the wheel with the most traction.

With that aside, let’s jump into what makes the Night Eagle edition different.

2017 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Recon

2017 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Recon

Another (awesome) special edition before the JK’s retirement

It’s no secret Jeep is preparing the next-generation of Wrangler due out for the 2018 model year. As such, the current Wrangler, well-known by its codename JK, has been receiving quite the number of special editions over the least few years. This one, however, is perhaps one of the best. It’s called the Recon and it’s only available with the Rubicon trim. But this isn’t just an appearance package – no, the Rubicon Recon comes with an upgraded front axle, new rock rails, and heavy-duty differential covers.

Those familiar with the Wrangler Rubicon know just how capable it comes from the factory. Even without the Recon upgrades, the Wrangler Rubicon comes with Dana 44 axles front and rear with locking differentials, Jeep’s Rock-Trac manual transfer case with its 4:1 crawl ratio, the electronically disconnecting front sway bar, and its beefy BFGoodrich KM off-road tires.

The handful of modifications Jeep includes within the Recon package only furthers the Wrangler’s dominance over lesser SUVs when it comes to off-roading. Jeep boss Mike Manley had this to say:

“With an array of beefed up off-road components, the new Rubicon Recon provides even more legendary Jeep Wrangler capability. With unmatched capability and a unique appearance, Rubicon Recon is the perfect Wrangler for our most loyal, diehard off-road enthusiasts who love to tackle the most demanding trails.”

Manley is certainly right about Jeep having loyal fans. The Wrangler has soared in popularity since the introduction of the four-door Wrangler Unlimited in 2007. Now as Jeep prepares to debut its all-new 2018 Wrangler JL, those on the fence about purchasing a JK Wrangler will have an even more difficult decision to face.

The 2017 Jeep Wrangler Recon goes on sale in late February 2017 with a starting price of $39,145 for the two-door model and $42,945 for the four-door Wrangler Unlimited.

Let’s check out what Jeep includes in this special edition Wrangler Rubicon.

Jeep Will Say Goodbye To Wrangler JK With Six Special Editions

Jeep Will Say Goodbye To Wrangler JK With Six Special Editions

Designed to drive customer interest until the Wrangler JL debuts

Jeep is on the cusp of launching its next-generation Wrangler SUV, the JL. But until that time comes in mid-2017, Jeep’s goal is move as many current Wranglers as it can. Helping the cause will be six special edition models based on the Sport, Sahara, and Rubicon models, according to Automotive News.

Anticipation for the next-generation Wrangler is growing and could be to blame for the Wrangler’s five-percent drop in sales since October 2016. The slight drop is the only blemish in the Wrangler’s exemplary sales record since 2011, having doubled its sales numbers since the Great Recession. Jeep reported selling more than 202,000 in 2015 with almost no incentives to drive demand.

The Wrangler’s popularity can be attributed to several factors. It remains a true body-on-frame SUV with solid axles front and rear, despite the industry’s move to car-based crossovers. It’s available in both two- and four-door versions with both soft and hard tops. It offers outstanding off-road capabilities, far more than nearly every other SUV on the market, save for perhaps the Toyota 4Runner. And of course, the Wrangler enjoys one of the largest aftermarket followings in the industry, with a countless number of parts and accessories from hundreds of companies.

The next-generation Wrangler will build on these attributes, supposedly adding a

fuel

efficient four-cylinder turbo, the availability of the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6, an eight-speed automatic, improved aerodynamics, an updated interior, and an innovative new removable top system. These areas fix known downfalls of the current Wrangler JK and will likely boost sales thanks to a greater appeal to a wider audience.

But until the new Wrangler JL hits dealer showrooms, Jeep is determined to milk the Wrangler JK for all it’s worth. Keep reading for the run-down on the upcoming special editions.

2017 Jeep Renegade Altitude

More style and attitude for Jeep’s Cute ‘Ute

Jeep announced two new special edition Renegades ahead of the 2016 L.A. Auto Show, each with their own unique personality and style. The Renegade Deserthawk is all about off-roading, while this, the 2017 Renegade Altitude is all about street cred with its murdered-out appearance. The Renegade Altitude continues Jeep’s use of the Altitude name and blacked-out styling cues, though this si the first time we’ve seen such a package on the Renegade.

“These two new Jeep Renegade models help to extend our popular small SUV’s continued global success since its launch last year, and to provide customers with the choice of two distinctive and unique special editions,” said Mike Manley, Head of Jeep Brand – FCA Global. Manley says the Renegade Altitude is “for customers looking for an edgy and aggressive appearance,” and mentions that this special-edition model builds off the other Altitude models across the Jeep lineup.

The 2017 Renegade Altitude is based off the Renegade’s Latitude trim level and brings many of the same features found on that model. These things include the 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with its MultiAir2 valvetrain system, a six-speed manual transmission, and standard features that include ParkSense rear backup camera and Keyless Go. The Renegade Altitude can also be had with the 180-horsepower 2.4-liter Tigershark four-cylinder and FCA’s nine-speed automatic transmission. Optional with either powertrain is Jeep’s Active Drive 4WD system.

The 2017 Jeep Renegade Altitude will go on sale beginning in November 2016 for a starting price of $22,390. That represents a $995 increase over the 2016 Renegade Latitude model. There’s a ton more information about the 2017 Renegade Altitude, so keep reading for the full run-down.

2017 Jeep Renegade Deserthawk

2017 Jeep Renegade Deserthawk

The Renegade goes full desert mode for 2017

Jeep announced two new special-edition Renegade models ahead of the 2016 L.A. Auto Show – the 2017 Renegade Altitude and this, the 2017 Renegade Deserthawk. Playing off Jeeps current “-hawk” naming scheme, the Deserthawk brings a slew of minor upgrades that form a rather complete and intriguing special-edition trim. Best of all, this production Jeep is birthed directly from the 2015 Renegade Desert Hawk concept Jeep built for the 2015 Easter Jeep Safari.

This goes to show that Jeep takes its concept vehicles very seriously. While some might be on the wild side, others have the ability to transition into production. That’s exactly the case with the Renegade Deserthawk. Even down to the paint color and graphics package, this production Jeep mirrors the once one-off custom upgrades found on the 2015 concept.

“The Jeep Renegade Deserthawk takes the best-in-class capability of the Renegade Trailhawk and combines it with a unique look and additional features that include rock rails and a towing package – all inspired by the desert’s extreme conditions,” said Mike Manley, Head of Jeep Brand – FCA Global.

Jeep is going so far an announcing pricing and release dates. Yep, the 2017 Renegade Deserthawk carries a base price of $28,140 and will be available come January of 2017. There’s a ton more information Jeep announced about this special-edition model, so keep reading for the full scoop.

2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit

2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit

The Grand Cherokee’s high-brow trim level

The 2016 New York Auto Show brought tons of new vehicles to the market, including several special edition models like the updated Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. This go-anywhere version of the venerable Grand Cherokee brings added attitude and abilities to the iconic SUV. However, Jeep product planners didn’t’ stop there. They also introduced the Grand Cherokee Summit – a high-end version of the Grand Cherokee that sits atop the model line.

The Summit name isn’t new for Grand Cherokee. In fact, the trim level has been seen on past models since at least the start of the decade. However for 2017, the Grand Cherokee Summit receives the latest front fascia with LED lights, 20-inch polished aluminum wheels, and an interior that’s fully wrapped in Laguna leather with the latest gear shifter design for the SUV. It represents the all-out, most luxurious trim available for the hardy off-roader.

Of course, the Summit trim shares its high ranks with the Grand Cherokee SRT and the upcoming Hellcat version rumored to be called the Trackhawk. Nevertheless, the Summit will be the most posh of the bunch.

Specifically, the Summit includes loads of standard features, including a suede headliner, auto-folding power mirrors, headlight washers, and a host of active safety systems. Also standard is Jeep’s Quadra-Drive II 4WD system and the Quadra-Lift air suspension system. Jeep allows the customer to choose the powertrain that’s right for them. This means the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, 5.7-liter Hemi V-8, and 3.0-liter EcoDiesel are all optional.

The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit will be available late summer of 2016. Prices have yet to be announced.
