BMW reserves the M7 and M9 monikers, which could mean a high-performance 7 Series and a flagship supercar

It’s not the first time the Bavarian carmaker reserves names for future models. This piece of information comes in the form of a filing from the Intellectual Property Office, in the Philippines, according to which BMW just reserved the M7 and M9 badge names.
The first name – M7 – could point out that BMW is finally ready to make a proper M-version of its executive sedan, as it never had one. This is actually more believable than you might think since BMW is presenting the upcoming 7 Series as a more driver-oriented luxury sedan. This certainly resonates with the company’s decision to reserve the M7 badge.
Until now, there really wasn’t much sense in making an M-version of the big sedan, even if the M7 moniker was reserved once before, in 2018. So far, the most powerful version of the BMW 7 Series has always been the 760iL, which is more luxury-oriented. According to this piece of information, from BMW Blog, this may change soon.
The M9 is where things get very interesting, as we see renderings of a mid-engine supercar. At this point, however, we don’t know for sure if BMW is working on a high-performance mid-engine model. We know they have the i8, but that’s hardly a supercar, with its 400-horsepower hybrid powertrain.
Of course, the name could simply be a placeholder, as it wouldn’t be the first time BMW has done that. With that being said, it could also indicate the arrival of a spiritual successor to the Giugiaro-designed BMW Nazca. As with other similar pieces of information, we’ll have to wait and keep our ears to the ground.
